The Coffin Bay Sun
Hello Coffin Bay,
As of the 21/7/20 the Council took over the interim management of the Morgan Reserve (Rec Park). Progress is unable to care for the area any longer as the bore water is not suitable to use for watering the oval and the sprinkler system also needs attention. Council will mow the oval 2-3 times per year, do periodic weeding & maintenance of the reserve and tennis court and maintenance of the watering system. Once the water problem is sorted & the sprinkler system is repaired I’m hoping that we can find someone who would be willing to take over the watering of the oval. If you notice any problems or vandalism in the area please contact the Council on 86760400. I have been meeting up with Margo Hansen lately, Margo is passionate about starting up a Community Garden which I think is a fantastic idea. So far Margo has written to Council stating her ideas and she & I have had a meeting with our local representatives, Peter Mitchell & Alan Tingay to gage their support. They are both onside so now the hard work starts beginning with finding the best site. Margo has a few ideas and these will have to be run past Council to see what can and can’t be used. I will keep you up to date each month in the Sun. As I mentioned last month Dr Rowe will be moving into the Hall after Christmas and the Library has suggested that we use their room as a waiting room which will be much nicer than waiting in the Hall. Last month we had the first Markets in the Hall for quite some time, I’m told that the stall holders had the best sales ever. Stall holders from Pt Lincoln came out for the day which was nice to see. Now I know that there is some talk about too many people there but I can assure you that Bernie, the lady that hires the Hall and organises the Markets, abided by all the rules and regulations set out by the SA Government in regards to Covid19. Once inside the Hall it was up to the public to keep a safe distance from others, this is something that is hard to supervise but most complied. I am in communication at the moment with the Eyre Far North Local Health Network that is responsible for the Coffin Bay District Nurse Service. I have unfortunately lost round one but if this is the only service that we are going to receive we need it to work well. I know some have been happy with the service but many more are not. I am writing regularly to them to keep them up to date and hopefully the teething problems can be sorted out. If you have anything you want to share with me about the service, good or bad please contact me so I can pass it on. Text or ring me on 0400854441, email me on [email protected], if you are on Face Book message me or just catch up with me if you see me out and about.
Cheers, Carol Fathers

GREY CURRAWONG
Currawongs are nasty pasties. They’re sneaky and furtive, not upfront like willies and magpies; they trash the nests of silvereyes and wrens in our garden and steal their eggs; they roost on a branch overlooking a termite mound and swoop on the newly hatched goannas as they venture out from their nest hole on the side of the mound; fly off with chicks kidnapped from smaller birds’ nests to feed to their own chicks; and eat unripe green figs off my tree – yuk!
But for all their naughty ways, I like them. After all, most of us enjoy a meal of chicken or lamb, don’t we! And to me, their beautiful carolling call more than atones for all their disagreeable habits. It is an intrinsic sound of Coffin Bay – long may it be heard!
Grey Currawongs are a bit larger than magpies, grey/black, with white on their tail feather tips, on their rump and patches half way along their wings. Their most striking features are a lighter grey heavy beak and a bright yellow eye with a black pupil.
I suspect Currawongs are another species which are monogamous, as for many years in late winter a pair have perched outside our glass door, looking in, waiting for a feed of cheese. To demonstrate what a good father he will be, dad occasionally offers a piece of cheese to his missus. In a month’s time, they will be flying beakfuls to their newly hatched chicks in a nest (which I haven’t found) east of our house. Their large stick nests, lined with grass are constructed on a horizontal tree fork.
Later still, the proud parents bring their newly fledged offspring to our balcony for a feed. The little ones carry on like pork chops; their begging antics and loud squawks very similar to baby magpies. What a treat it is to watch them!
Grey Currawongs can be confused with White-winged Choughs, also known as Jays. Choughs are a little smaller, have curved beaks and bright red eyes. They are always found in family groups and often seen while driving to Lincoln in the Wanilla Forest area.

Gardening Tip
by Phil Siviour
Coffin Bay Gardening Service
The biggest job in the garden this month is weeding! It’s also time to prune your roses, if you haven’t done so already. Brian Wagner, rose grower and owner of Wagner's Rose Nursery of Kalangadoo, South Australia, shows how to prune a stem rose and
what to do to have a bigger and better plant for next Spring on his YouTube channel – Wagner’s Rose Nursery https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yD5cFu8RWlY&feature=youtu.be
If you would like to grow your own tomato seedlings for planting out early in spring it’s time to get that started. Seeds will take 8 to 10 weeks to germinate and grow to the right size to plant. Make sure you have them in a mini glasshouse to get them going.
Preparation of your garden bed for spring planting is important now by working good compost and organic matter into the soil.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
*The Coffin Bay Yacht club has an amazing history*
providing a water sports and social hub for locals and
visitors alike over many years.
It began as the brain child of a small band of young locals who not only had a love of
the sea but had determined that there was more for them to do out there on the
magic waters of Coffin Bay.
Locals with familiar family names such as Hurrell, Rogers, Mattsson, Stenson, Foster
and Puckridge, all people of the sea, born boaties and fishers, were to extend their
nautical activities to the art of sailing and ultimately gravitate towards the concept of
forming a Coffin Bay sailing club.
Early activities saw the hardy and enthusiastic group gather on weekends, or any
other time that suited, under the shade of the foreshore trees near the original wharf.
It was here that the Heron yachts (still sailed today) were launched from the beach,
the same little beach used by our current boats. Racing operations were carried out
from the foreshore with the group socialising at the end of sailing with an ale or two.
Homemade afternoon teas were brought over to the beach to sell as part of
fundraising activities to help finance the fledgling club and its future security.
There was great fun and rivalry amongst our pioneer club sailors, and inevitably it
became clear that the “club” was a winner both socially and recreationally for our
small semi isolated community. The decision was made to formalise the activities.
AT A PUBLIC MEETING IN 1975, A REGISTERED CLUB WAS FORMED WITH
AN INITIAL MEMBERSHIP FEE OF $2 FOR THE 22 INAUGURAL MEMBERS.
And so coffin bAy yAcht club cAme to be… and the hard work was to follow !!!
WomenFor more information contact:Research has shown that
• There are differences in skills, knowledge, experience, roles and behaviours between men and women in regard to bushfire
• Those with fire fighting skills (generally men) are either fighting the fire or protecting the larger property / neighbourhood / district
• People are generally poorly prepared for bushfires
• Many people are unaware of what to do and how to be prepared
• Many people underestimate the risk and over estimate their capacity
• Women and children are more likely to evacuate Late evacuations are a major cause of civilian casualties
• Most people do not plan for a bushfire. nor do they expect one
• Women and children make up a large percentage of civilians killed by bushfires
