The Cloth Division’s Research and Development team are constantly researching and uncovering new attributes of Zorflex® Activated Carbon Cloth so it has a limitless number of applications.

Chemviron Carbon is the European operations of Calgon Carbon Corporation – the worldwide leader in the production and development of activated carbon in both cloth and granular forms. The Cloth Division, based near Durham, UK, is the world’s leading manufacturer of 100% activated carbon cloth.

Wide and diverse applicationsChemviron Carbon’s Cloth Division has been established for over 30 years. First developed in the 1970’s, activated carbon cloth was originally used in military clothing and masks to protect wearers against nuclear, biological and chemical agents.

Today, Zorflex® Activated Carbon Cloth can be used in numerous applications, for example from sensor protection to filters for ostomy bags, from clothing to wound dressings and from the conservation of artefacts to respiratory masks.

Chemviron Carbon’s Cloth Division has recently developed a series of products which, when tested by the UK’s Health Protection Agency using a surrogate test virus, have been proven to be both antiviral and virucidal with outstanding results.

Results mean the combination of materials using either Zorflex® VB or Zorflex® VB Plus can be used in a variety of diverse applications; from respiratory masks, medical gowns, wound dressings, patient clothing and bedding in the medical field to industrial applications such as air conditioning systems.

Customised to YOUR requirementsOne of the major advantages of Zorflex® Activated Carbon Cloth is that it can be customised to your requirements to fit with your particular application.

Zorflex® can be provided in either woven or knitted formats and supplied in various lengths and shapes. In addition to this, value added composites canbe created by laminating the cloth to other materials or impregnating the cloth with chemical treatments.

The impregnation of the cloth with various chemicals, such as silver or copper, can make the cloth more sensitive to the adsorption of inorganic molecules.

Zorflex® activated carbon cloth adsorbs a large volume of organic or inorganic molecules from various gases and liquids and acts as a high purity filter, a method of separation or as a protective layer.

As Zorflex® is 100% activated carbon, it is more effective at adsorption compared to other carbon loaded materials which have a lower activated carbon content.

Activated carbons generally have a vast network of pores of varying sizes. Zorflex® activated carbon cloth has a microporous structure which results in rapid adsorption kinetics and the capability to adsorb to a higher level of purity.

Zorflex® can also be custom-manufactured to comprise a mesoporous structure to adsorb larger molecules if required.

The various sizes of the pores can be defined as follows:

– Macropores have a diameter of more than 50nm

– Mesopores have a diameter of 2-50nm; and– Micropores have a diameter of less than 2nm

Due to its microporous structure, Zorflex® activated carbon cloth has an extremely large surface area. To put its capabilities into perspective, just 1g of Zorflex® activated carbon cloth has the surface area of over half the size of a football pitch. This, combined with the strong electrostatic forces within the cloth, enables the cloth to be highly efficient at adsorbing both liquids and gases.

Compared to activated carbon granules, Zorflex® activated carbon cloth exhibits rapid reaction and adsorption kinetics and is therefore highly suitable where short contact time, high airflow speeds and small bed depths are required. Zorflex®, unlike granular activated carbons, is also suitable for use in applications where there is high humidity as its adsorption capacity is less adversely affected by moisture.

Zorflex® is available in woven and knitted formats and can also be tailored to your requirements by various activity levels, weights and thicknesses.

Finally, Chemviron Carbon’s Cloth Division takes quality, consistency and the environment seriously. As proof of this the Company has achieved ISO 9001 quality certification, ISO 13485 standard for the manufacture of medical devices and ISO 14001 environmental standard.

The woven and knitted formats both have different attributes which are outlined opposite.

Zorflex® Knitted Cloth Zorflex® knitted cloth offers a stretchable, elastic fabric which does not shed or fray. It is therefore very useful in applications such as clothing (e.g. NBC protective clothing, gloves and socks) and wound dressings.

Ostomy Filters Zorflex® activated carbon cloth is used in the manufacture of filters for vented ostomy bags. Its high performance to size ratio is ideal for ostomy devices.

For those who use colostomy or ileostomy devices, comfort and discretion are of the utmost importance. To help improve the quality of life for ostomy patients, Zorflex® very effectively removes all odour and also controls the release of gases thus preventing ballooning (too slow an air flow) or pancaking (where the air flow is too fast). Both these attributes significantly reduce stress and embarrassment for ostomy patients.

Zorflex® is so effective that even when the filter becomes blocked by up to 50%, there is no reduction in airflow through the filter

Respiratory Masks Produced exclusively by Chemviron Carbon’s Cloth Division, the Carbosorb™ Plus mask, is highly effective at providing protection against aqueous mists, odours, organic sprays and vapours. Containing Zorflex® activated carbon cloth, the mask is used for its unrivalled adsorption and high airflow for easy breathing and it also comes with an adjustable nose bridge for a comfortable fit.

Various applications for the Carbosorb™ Plus mask include hospitals, dentists, museums, art galleries and many industrial applications such as metal processing, ceramics, textiles, photography and welding.

An optional M1 mask which protects against vapour from mercury is also available.

Chemviron Carbon’s Cloth Division is proud to supply to some of the world’s leading medical device companies and is the leading provider of activated carbon cloth for medical purposes.

Antiviral and VirucidalChemviron Carbon’s Cloth Division has recently developed a series of products which, when tested by the UK’s Health Protection Agency (HPA), have been proven to be both antiviral and virucidal with outstanding results.

Zorflex® VB and Zorflex® VB Plus were tested by the HPA using the MS2-Coliphage surrogate virus. Test results found that a combination of materials including Zorflex® VB, captured up to 99.54% of a virus. Once captured, the Zorflex® VB active layer killed 93% of the virus. Even more outstanding results were obtained for Zorflex® VB Plus giving a capture rate of up to 99.88% within the combination of materials and a 98% virus kill rate within the active layer.

Results mean the combination of materials using either Zorflex® VB or Zorflex® VB Plus can be used in a variety of applications in the medical field; from respiratory masks and wound dressings to medical gowns, patient clothing and bedding.

Wound DressingsThe inclusion of Zorflex® activated carbon cloth considerably enhances the efficacy of both advanced and active wound dressings.

The antimicrobial properties of Zorflex® can be further enhanced by a unique impregnation process which produces a dispersion of nano and micro particles of metallic silver – one of the most effective biocides known to man. Other impregnations are also possible.

As the cloth is naturally permeable, the wound is able to heal due to the breathability of the cloth.

The Cloth Division has the manufacturing capability to produce the entire wound dressing product containing activated carbon cloth including procedures such as pouching, sterilisation and labelling.

Chemviron Carbon’s Cloth Division also produces cloth which is used in Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT) devices. Due to its ability to adsorb odour, Zorflex® is used in the part of the NPWT device where wound exudate is collected.

The natural electrical properties of Zorflex® provide the potential for its use in conductive wound therapy devices. In addition to this, the cloth’s ability to both adsorb and desorb opens up opportunities to develop the use of Zorflex® in other medical devices.
