Reading Workshop (Cont.)

What is the DIBELS Assessment? The DIBELS Assessment is a standardized, individually ad-ministered test. The DIBELS Assessment measures early lit-eracy skills and provides data which indicates whether thestudent is at low risk, at some risk, or at risk for achievingearly literacy benchmark goals.

These measures include Letter Naming Fluency, Initial SoundFluency, Phoneme Segmentation Fluency, Nonsense WordFluency, or alphabetic principle (letter-sound correspondence),and Oral Reading Fluency.

What is the Qualitative Reading Inventory IV?The Qualitative Reading Inventory is an authentic readingassessment designed to assess the reading abilities of students. The assessment identifies emergent readers to advanced read-ers. It includes narrative and expository selections from pre-primer to high school. The expository selections are takenfrom the content areas of social studies and science and aresimilar to those found in basals and content area textbooks.

This informal reading inventory includes graded word lists, oral reading, silent reading and comprehension. Comprehen-sion is measured by retelling, explicit and implicit questionsand look backs which allow the reader to search in the text formissing or incorrect answers to questions.

Think alouds are also included which allow the assessor toanalyze student thoughts during reading.

This assessment is used to identify reading levels and to matchthe student with an appropriate text. It determines readerstrengths and needs and suggests direction for interventioninstruction. It can be used to chart growth across a schoolyear or after the completion of a special intervention pro-gram.

How will my child’s progress be assessed?Assessment using the QRI will begin at the end of the firstsemester of your child’s first grade year to determine yourchild’s strengths and needs. If reading intervention is needed,it will aid the teacher in planning for intervention instruction.

Assessments in grade 2-6 will be given at the beginning of theschool year, at the end of the first semester and at the end ofthe school year.

When will my child’s progressbe reported?Once your child becomes a par-ticipant of the reading workshopprogram, you will receive semes-ter reading cards detailing yourchild’s achievement. They will besent home with your child’s re-port card, but will be a separatedocument.

How can I get information about my child’s progress? At any time, feel free to contact Patti Puterbaugh, K-12 Read-ing Specialist, about your child’s strengths and needs.

Senior Yearbook PicturesMrs. Martin, Yearbook Sponsor

This year our yearbook publisher and theSeward County Independent are requestingdigital portraits. This means that when yoursenior has their picture taken, they need toask the photographer to put the picture they

want in the yearbook on a CD or they may ask the photogra-pher to e-mail me their senior picture - [email protected].

If this isn’t possible senior pictures may still be brought into me and we will scan them.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at [email protected] or the High School 796-2151, ext. 477.

No Extra Riders -

Just a reminder that we have two bus routes that are full. Please donot plan on having extra riders accompany your children home oneither the Whisenhunt or Willet routes. We realize that not every-one may ride each route everyday, but we have no way of knowingthat in time to determine whether we can accomodate extra riders. We have to plan as if all regular riders will be on the route, so extrastudents may put us over capacity. We have seen an increase in busridership, so we would appreciate your help in this area.

...And The Rest Of The CC StoryBob Hoyer, Head Cross Country Coach

The last half of the Cross Country season always feelslike you’re a snowball rolling down a hill, picking upspeed. Each race seems to get bigger and bigger. Themost important thing about the last half is that, as a TEAM,we continued to get better each race and each week. This year’s TEAM definitely continued to improve allthe way through the State Meet in Kearney.

This season was one of the most injury prone seasons Ican remember and it required a TEAM of great depthand desire to overcome all those problems. Not onlywere we faced with the typical aches and pains, we alsohad a rash of overuse injuries that occur due to low sum-mer mileage along with a couple of stress fractures. Mostof these injuries took out some of our top 8 runners onboth the boys and girls squads. The bad news was thatmany of them could not complete the season, but the goodnews was we had runners step up and take over thosespots and give us their best performances.

At the Fillmore Central Invite, both our squads started toshow the promise we coaches believed they had withinthemselves. We had some outstanding performances andsome amazing finishes that brought the boys home with7th place and the girls with a runner-up plaque. How-ever, this was the beginning of injury problems that pum-meled us the remainder of the year.

The Championship season started with the ECNC meetat Brainard. This was the most difficult course I can everremember the kids running in the last 24 seasons! Ourkids did a great job and the boys added another Champi-onship, thanks to winning the tie breaker. The next chal-lenge was Districts at Branched Oak Lake. Breezy Dowdqualified as an individual and the team pushing to a 5th

place finish. The boys were led by individual qualifierSteve Krupicka as the team improved their positions dur-ing the second half of the race to finish 3rd and qualify asa TEAM for state.

The State Meet was a cool/cold overcast day that broughtthe “fire” out of all of our runners. You always try toposition your runners so they run their best at the end ofthe season and this year was a great accomplishment.Every one of our seven runners ran a PR on the state

meet course. Asc o a c h e s , w ecouldn’t have askedfor any more fromour runners. Theycompeted like thechampions they are.

As their coach, I want to thank all of our runners for alltheir hard work and dedication this season. We willgreatly miss the contributions of our seniors and it willbe important that our underclassmen step up to take onthose leadership roles. I hope that all of our runners havelearned about the importance of summer work and work-ing out 6 days per week so we can avoid some of thoseoveruse injuries that plagued us this year.

Cross Country parents, your continued support is amaz-ing and so greatly appreciated. Without you, we wouldnever be able to put on the meets we have and your will-ingness to take in this crowd of people for dinners hasbeen awesome. Thank you for all you have done and allthe positive support you have given to all our runners!

Coaches Pulec and Westover, you’ve given this TEAMyour heart and dedication! You have both provided somuch positive leadership throughout the season. Thankyou for providing those young legs that go so much fasterthan my old, beat-up pair.

Cheerleaders, students, faculty, and community members, thank you for being there for us, cheering us on when-ever possible. It means a lot to us to have you there aswe do our best to represent our school. We also want tothank the Malcolm Volunteer Fire Department for beingat our home meets and taking care of any and all runnerswho needed assistance.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT FOR PARENTS OF DISTRICT 148 STUDENTS

Dear Malcolm Public School Parents,

The safety of the students, faculty and staff at Malcolm Public School is one of our top priorities. For that reason, Idecided to stay with the Saf-T-Net ALERTNOW Emergency Notification Service. This service will allow us to senda message to ALL of our student’s parents on their contact numbers within minutes after an emergency or incidenthas occurred at the school. We are hopeful that this ability will give you, the parent, peace of mind knowing that if anemergency should happen, you will be informed immediately.

The message that you will receive may be used to alert parents and other emergency contacts about the situationoccurring at the school. Primarily, we hope to only have to use ALERTNOW to send important non-emergencymessages out to parents like early school closings due to weather, but parents should be aware that we will have thecapability to briefly notify them should a more serious situation arise.

The delivery success of the message is only as successful as the contact information we have for our students, soplease make certain that we have the most current and up to date contact information. For early morning schoolclosings, the school will select only one emergency number, that number will be the students home phone number. If parents do not have a home landline number, the school will select one of the parents cell phone numbers to call.If parents do not want to receive early morning school closing information, please notify Teresa Gregg at the HighSchool and she will remove your number.

In order for the message to be delivered successfully and in a timely manner we are asking that parents make sure theschool has the current emergency contact information. Should this information change throughout the year, pleaselet Teresa know immediately. All emergency numbers will be called in the event of an emergency at the school inwhich we feel it is imperative that you, the parent, get contacted as soon as possible. Examples: home, dad cell, momcell, mom work, etc.

Important:1. If you have caller ID. Your caller ID will display either 411 or the school phone number anytime a call iscoming through from the school. Caller ID will not display a name associated with the number.2. There is a slight two to three second pause once the phone has been answered. Please stay on the line. Thesystem needs to detect a couple seconds of silence to determine whether a live person has picked up thephone or an answering machine. Do not keep saying hello.3. The system will leave a message on your voicemail or answering machine. However, the system is set toring each line six (6) times. If your answering machine is set to pick up after the sixth ring a message will notbe delivered to your machine. We encourage you to set it at five (5) rings.4. If you have such things as Telemarketer Zapper or Privacy Director on your telephone lines you may notreceive the call. For example, with Privacy Director all incoming calls are rerouted and the callers mustidentify themselves for the call to go through. Because this system is automated it will not identify itself, thus the call will not get through to your number.

Sincerely,

Superintendent

Bus Notes For Parents...

Students need to be at their stop before the ex-pected time in case the bus is running early. Wereceive many calls in the morning of students notriding that particular day. This often results in thebus being to your home earlier than expected.

We try to keep the buses running as close as possible to schedule, but times can vary by as much as 5-7 minutes either way. Pleasebe at the end of your driveway ready to board. If there is morethan one student, please don’t send students out one at a time, taking several minutes at the stop. We are having to wait onstudents just starting down the driveway. This causes concernbecause of the amount of traffic on the roads we travel. If youhave any questions, please call Julie at the business office, 796-2151, #3.
