The Cleveland Orchestra and associate conductor Brett Mitchell will explore the unique traits of the four families of musical instruments that make up the “Sounds of the Orchestra.” Students will experience the distinctive sounds of the string, woodwinds, brass, and percussion sections, and will learn how composers weave these individual groups into diverse musical soundscapes.
THE CLEVELAND ORCHESTRA | EDUCATION CONCERTS
Last season The Cleveland Orchestra, along with more than 20 community partners, participated in a community-wide collaboration called Violins of Hope which centered on violins that survived the Holocaust (even when their owners did not). Amnon Weinstein, a renowned Israeli master violin maker, restored and collected these invaluable instruments, which were brought to Cleveland in fall 2015. The faith, passion, sorrow, resistance, resilience and hope of the original instrument owners came to life as Amnon Weinstein’s violins were played in various concerts throughout the project, including a series of Violins of Hope Education Concerts for middle school and high school students at Severance Hall.
Back by Popular DemandThe Education Concerts combine music and drama to engage a wide audience in this important period in history, and to portray the acts of defiance, and the survival of a people and their culture in the face of an unprecedented attempt at their complete annihilation.
Because they were so well received in December 2015, the Violins of Hope Education Concerts will return in March 2017 so that more students can experience, through music and dramatic vignettes, resistance, resilience, and hope in the face of discrimination, injustice, and terrible suffering. (Sadly, these themes still resonate today.) Our world has been rocked by far too many instances of intolerance, hate and violence. It is time to embrace our differences and work together for peace.
Encore Performances to take Place at Maltz Performing Arts center on the campus of case western reserve universityWe are delighted to present the March 2017 Violins of Hope Education Concerts in the Milt and Tamar Maltz Performing Arts Center at the Temple Tifereth Israel on the campus of Case Western Reserve University (CWRU)! This historic building, located just three minutes from Severance Hall in University Circle, was built in 1924 and recently underwent a stunning renovation (which transformed it from a Temple into the Maltz Performing Arts Center of CWRU). The history of the building, which housed one of the largest reformed Jewish congregations in North America, is particularly meaningful for these Violins of Hope Education Concerts.
Discrimination. Injustice. Suffering. Courage. Survival. Hope.

These concerts are based on the original 2015 Violins of Hope Education Concerts, a collaboration between The Cleveland Orchestra and the Case Western Reserve University/Cleveland Play House Master of Fine Arts Program in Acting.
The violin was embedded in Jewish culture for centuries before World War II, but it assumed extraordinary new importance during the Holocaust. For some Jews, the violin was liberator, freeing them and their families from Nazi tyranny. For others it was savior, sparing their lives in ghettos and concentration camps. For many, it provided comfort during some of the
darkest hours In history.
In these Cleveland Orchestra Education Concerts, music and drama combine to give us a powerful new lens through which to view the important role of mu-sic in Jewish life before, during and after the Holocaust, and express the themes of spirit, resistance, resilience, and hope.
