Nadean Clarke Passes

Nadean Clarke, an MTNA mem-ber since 1953 who was WSMTA NW Vice President from 1968-70, WS-MTA Treasurer from 1970-1985, and an Honorary Life Member of WS-MTA since 1988, passed away on August 23rd in Port Orchard. She was a member of the West Sound Chapter and a long time active member of the Kitsap County Chap-ter. Nadean served two terms as president of KMTA along with

holding several officer positions throughout her membership. Nadean's passion for teaching piano was an inspiration and a model for her students, parents, and other teachers. She influenced several mu-sic careers throughout the state and worldwide. In addition to being a gifted piano teacher, Nadean was a friend, a mentor, a confidant to many of us in the music community. She will be greatly missed.

What do you do in your spare time?

“Spare time? I don’t think I have much of that! However, I do like to knit, tend my flowers in the summer, travel and be with my family whenever I can.”

What do you want to be when you grow up?

“I haven’t decided that one yet. Probably a piano teacher! I just cannot imagine doing any-thing else that I would love as much as teaching.”

What composer would you like to have lunch with?

“That is a hard one – I think I would like to have lunch with Claude Debussy in Monet’s gar-den at Giverny. I am enthralled with the music of Debussy and how he creates all the colors and effects through sound. I love being in France; I love French food and French Impressionistic painting so the music seems to speak to me through Debussy.”

What do you enjoy about teaching? “I think the challenge of bringing music into children’s lives so that it is meaningful and something of value they can carry for the rest of their lives. I also love working with so many different age groups and person-alities.”

Thank you Mary Jane! Thank you for the enthusiasm, energy, and in-spiration you give to all of us. The Washington State Music Teachers Association is a vibrant or-ganization because of people like

Mary Jane who are not afraid to say, “yes.” I challenge all to get involved and be a part of the many facets of WSMTA. Our involvement benefits our students, enriches our lives and keeps our many fine programs run-ning smoothly. Speaking of running—isn’t that what we do in the fall and never stop until early summer?? Keep on track. Keep your focus on making a more musical tomorrow! Future Events

MTNA Foundation Fund

Did you know that WSMTA was one of the top five contributors to the MTNA Foundation Fund for 2005? In 2006, the MTNA Foundation Fund awarded fifteen Teacher Enrichment Grants to help fund continuing education and professional development projects. Three of those

grants were awarded to WSMTA mem-bers: Jennifer Bonato (Moses Lake), Harriet West (Moses Lake), and Mary Loeffelbein (Ephrata). Applications for 2007 became avail-able September 1, 2006 -- Postmark deadline: January 10, 2007. The MTNA Foundation Fund award-ed grants to local associations for the ed-ucation and professional development of teachers and for the promotion of music in the immediate community. Three of the fifteen grants were received by chap-ters in Washington: Lake Washington, Grays Harbor, Moses Lake. Applications for 2006 became avail-able September 1, 2006 -- Postmark deadline: February 1, 2007. Guidelines and application forms for 2007 MTNA Foundation Fund grants are available on the Foundation Fund website at www.mtnafoundation.org. Adjudication Announcements

Bravo to our 555 teachers who entered about 5400 students in the adjudication program in spring 2006. There were adjudications for piano, voice, flute and strings, eval-uated by 58 members of our out-standing team of adjudicators. Our adjudicators provided 1659 hours of time, representing an average of about 3 hours per teacher enrolled. There were 19 Music Link students who took part and 72 students who received High School Credit. As outstanding as those numbers are, there are still at least another 555 WSMTA member teachers who did not participate in the adjudication program who might want to consider entering students this year. This is the time to begin preparation, and ask questions of other chapter mem-bers who understand the benefits. You may go on line, at wstma.net, to locate a brief description of the Adjudication Program by clicking student activities. You will find add-

The CLARION – Oct., 2006 - Page 4

itional information by clicking “forms” and under “Adjudication Forms” you’ll find the “Adjudica-tions Booklet” which provides the necessary information about the pro-gram. Beyond that you will find most of the necessary forms this year for your participation in adjudica-tions at that website, thanks to John and Margee Webster, who have efficiently and effectively made forms available. All teachers will be able to print off their own forms from the wsmta. net site. If you use Microsoft Word Program on your computer, you will be able to complete your forms at your computer. If you use other word processing programs, you can print the forms and fill them in as usual. You will need to print and turn in your registration forms to your Chapter Adjudication Chair for processing as usual. If you do not use the computer, be sure to be in touch with your Chapter Adjudica-tion Chair, so forms can be made available to you. We don’t want anyone left out, whether or not you use the computer. I would also like to welcome new-ly approved adjudicators, listed be-low, to our team! We thank them for coming on board. These adjudicators do not appear in the WSMTA 2006-20007 Adjudicator List.

If you have not visited our state website recently you may not know that WSMTA, in an effort to continue its support of the MTNA Certifica-tion Program, has offered five new Certification Application Fee Grants. One of those grants has already been awarded (see below), but four more are just waiting to be claimed! WS-MTA will reimburse one half of the Certification Application Fee for the first five teachers who successfully apply for certification before July 1, 2007. Procedure:

1. Apply for MTNA Certification by July 1, 2007. 2. Make copies of documentation that you applied and paid the MTNA Certification Application Fee. 3. Submit documentation to the WSMTA Certification Chair: Linda Burger, NCTM 1629 E. Glass Ave. Spokane, WA 99207

Arts in Your Community!

How does your community sup-port the arts? Think beyond the “performing” art of music into thea-ter, dance and visual arts. Our news-paper just published a guide to the arts in our community and once again I was amazed (even though they left some out) at the level of sup-port there is in Olympia. We have a Performing Arts Center that brings in a variety of shows throughout the year, including a “young artist” series of musical per-formers. Our Olympia Symphony performs there. In addition, the com-munity college just completed an arts building and has already booked per-formances. We have two youth orch-estras and an incredible youth theater group. In addition, there are two bal-let schools. We have two other adult theater groups also. Several of the high schools have performing arts centers. St. Martin’s College offers a series of concerts/ lectures, by donation. Artists in our area sponsor “open houses” of their studios too. Our community has two “Arts Walks” in the Fall and Spring. Art-ists show their work in different bus-inesses downtown. There are differ-ent musical groups performing in various venues. It is so fun to wan-der around, seeing the art, listening to the music and running into friends and acquaintances. The “Procession of the Species” parade is a part of the Spring “Arts Walk” and has gained national attention. Participants work all year on their “creations” for this parade. However, there is still room for improvement in finding affordable venues with good pianos for per-formances.

I need to hear from you about how your community supports the arts! Email me at:

E e NEW MUSIC e E

In Recital—Duets –Books 1-6. FJH Music Co., with CDs, compiled and edited by Helen Marlais.

Teachers know that there are many benefits to be derived by stu-dents when they work in ensembles. Yet many of us put that at the bottom of our list when we assign material. The interesting repertoire in this series might inspire teachers to pre-sent ensemble recitals or, at the least, include duets in studio recitals. The arrangements are imagina-tive, well-written and appropriate to their respective styles. The accom-panying CDs include very useful practice tracks. The introductory pages of each volume list the con-cepts emphasized in that book and also include 2 pages of tips for prac-ticing duets. In addition there is a page of suggestions for using the CD. Some of the books have all equal-part duets, others also include unequal-part duets. Two pages are devoted to bios of the arrangers. Book 3 (Late Elementary), 44 pages, $6.95 includes many familiar pieces: Simple Gifts, When Irish Eyes are Smiling, Roundup, Chopsticks, Sleeping Beauty Waltz, Beautiful Dreamer, Cielito Lindo and Fire Dance. Book 4 (Early Intermediate), 48 pp. $7.95. The repertoire in Book 4 is more varied than that in Bk. 3. It ranges from Mozart to St. Louis Blues to Hava Nagila. The following pieces are included: Two Guitars arr. by Ed-win McLean, Hava Nagila arr. by Melody Bober, Fascination arr. by Kevin Olson, St. Louis Blues arr. by Kevin Olson, Eine Kleine Nacht-musik arr. by Timothy Brown, Pach-elbel’s Canon in D arr. by Robert Schultz, Mourning Doves arr. by Valerie Roth Roubos, and Northern Expedition arr. by Wynn-Anne Rossi. Book 6 (Late Intermediate) in-cludes Rondo alla Turca, Morning

Has Broken, Irving Berlin’s swinging I Love A Piano, The Easy Winners by Scott Joplin, Funiculi Funicula, Hun-garian Rhapsody #2, Afternoon Stomp, a very cute jazzy tune written and arr. by David Karp and the maj-estic Fantasy written and arr. by Tim-othy Brown. This series is a welcome addition to the studio of teachers who enjoy en-semble work.

Skagit Valley “Harmony in Action”

From the San Juan Islands to the foothills of Mt. Baker and the Cas-cades lies the fertile Skagit Valley. Renowned for its rich agricultural land and vast estuarial system of the Skagit River, it produces over 20 thousand tons of seeds annually. From colorful tulip fields to wineries, it is surpassed only by the Nile River for its productivity. Our Skagit Valley Chapter reaches over 1000 students. The County is an artistic mecca for the performing arts. Most recently, the Chapter played a prominent role in the development of a Performing Arts Center, McIntyre Hall, located on the Skagit Com-munity College campus and served several years on its Developmental Board. It also works in liaison with the La Conner Institute for the Per-forming Arts in the featuring of our State Competition Winners in con-cert with honorariums up to $250 dollars each sponsored by the Bank of America. The Skagit Symphony also hosts a program of Emerging Artists annually. Our students are active in their school musical activi-ties and productions and participate in school state competitions and many community arts festivals and activities. Several of our teachers are board members of arts groups throughout the County. The Chapter offers annual awards for students who serve as accompanists as well as in church musicianship. The theme for this year, “Har-mony in Action”, lends itself to the goals of broadening our community role and working together on behalf of student opportunities. The new Board of Directors has had a busy last four months procuring our speakers for the 2006-2007 year. In

addition, the Chapter Directory has been revitalized and reorganized to streamline each committee’s process-ing of information, programs, and requirements. We have added our own local identity with a Logo show-ing our parent organizations, the local tulip, and musical notation. This was a joint effort completed by creative and talented members with-in our chapter. The biggest activity of this year will be our Workshop on February 28th in Mount Vernon. Dell Parkinson will hold a morning ses-sion, open to the public with a special discounted registration fee for WS-MTA members. “Rhythm and Phras-ing Teaching Techniques” is his top-ic. We guarantee you will see more about this in future issues of The CLARION.

Jody Graves Concert in Wenatchee

The Wenatchee Chapter will be featuring Dr. Jody Graves in concert Sunday October 22, 2:00 pm, at Grace Lutheran Church, Wenatchee. The concert is titled, “Stories from the Piano,” and in addition to a variety of piano works, she will be sharing pic-tures and highlights from her recent trip to the Middle East. Proceeds from this concert will benefit the chapter’s Senior Achievement Award fund. Jody Graves maintains an exciting and active performing career, and is recognized nationally as a distin-guished performing artist and teach-er of piano. She has most recently toured in the Middle East as a Cul-tural Ambassador for the U.S. State Department. The Middle East Tour, with the Sapphire Trio, included con-certs in Bahrain, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. Dr. Graves is an Associate Profes-sor of Piano at Eastern Washington University and Director of Keyboard Studies. She is in great demand as an adjudicator. Each season takes her across the country as an MTA clini-cian as well. Ms. Graves is especially interested in promoting concert art music and creating unique ways to foster a col-laborative experience between artist and listener. Graves holds a Doctor-ate Degree in Piano Performance and

Literature from the Eastman School of Music, where she was the recipient of the distinguished Teacher of the Year award for her excellence in teaching. For information contact me at: [email protected]

South King County Charter Members Honored

The South King County Music Teachers Association honored its ac-tive, charter members at its May 2006 meeting with a cake and coffee recep-tion. We extended a heartfelt thank you to Edna (Bevan) Levack, Ella Mae Durkee, Jacquelyn Holt, Eliza-beth Lien, and Miriam Price for their years of contribution in so many cap-acities to make our chapter success-ful. A display table was set up to show the history of our chapter; it included pictures, news clippings, yearbooks and programs as well as the original, 1973, charter document that was signed by State President David Rostkoski and Northwest District Vice-President Betty Lou Barton. Our chapter concluded that keeping archives is an important job.
