The Clapper December 2017 & January 2018

Dear Friends,

Advent is upon us once again! Did you know that this first season of our church year was once, like Lent, a 40-day long

period of penitence and preparation? It's hard to imagine giving up chocolate for Advent, don't you think? But these weeks leading up to Christmas have now become a 4+ week flurry of shopping, baking, over-eating, family gatherings and celebrations. Advent can be exhausting! Add in a Christmas Tea, Caroling with your church family and some extra travel,and it's easy to lose the “reason for the season.” We set such a furious pace for ourselves that all we see is a blur as the days speed by.

Don't get me wrong! I enjoy all those extra things that make this season so special. I love the busyness, I love the constant din, well – mostly. But in this season of waiting, I've discovered that if I wait – even hopefully– for time and space just for me, well... it will be a long wait.

So from time to time I find myself looking for a quiet corner, an out of the way place to just sit, maybe in thefleeting afternoon sunlight, to revel in the holiness of the season. In that place of quiet I witness the hopefulness of lights strewn around town just holding their own against the approaching darkness. I experience the peace of the day fading. For me that's a holy time.

I hope in this season of Advent, through this season ofwatchfulness and anticipation, of hopefulness and peace, you'll be able to find a place of quiet rest. I hope you might pick up an Advent devotional that makes finding this time intentional and necessary. To help with this you might want to look at the Advent calendar on the table in the Vestry that has a devotional task for each day... Or you might find something online – maybe something like this one through Facebook called Keeping Watch Together.

However you do it, I pray you seek out a path that putsyou in touch with the Holy One who is coming among us once again – who indeed is already here!

Grace and Peace,

From the Treasurer:

Kittery Holiday BasketsIf you would like to help spread Christmas cheer to two Kittery families, please check the Christmas tree in the vestry for an

ornament with a description of a person in need. UNWRAPPED gifts should be returned by Sunday, December 10. Please remember to return the gift tag ornament with the gift! If you have any questions, please speak to Nadine Donnell (207-363-7640).

The Book Club will be meeting December 5 at 6:30 pm at the home of Robert and Diane McDonough (48 Old Post Rd. Kittery) to discuss Our Souls of Night by Kent Haruf. Kent Haruf’s novel tells the tale of the unlikely love found whenAddie Moore proposes that her neighbor, Louis Waters, sleeps in the same bed as her because the nights are lonely in small town Holt County. Their arrangement immediately comes under fire from the other elderly folks. Despite their words, the two continue because they believe they have finally found some light after the death of their spouses.

Our “Gratitudes”A special thank you goes out to Diana Marzinzikand cast of thousands for pulling together such a wonderful celebration as we dedicated our new patio on October 22. Thanks also to Rob Varney for securing the services of the “pedi-cab” for scenic trips around the block. Wow! What an amazing celebration!

My grateful thanks go out to everyone for the kind and generous gift for my 15th anniversary of serving this wonderful church! Anyone up for 15 more? Pastor Brad

Thank you also to Alan Robinson for meticulously painting the clamps and mounting our parking signs in front of the church. They look as though they've always been there. And if you look up an see the warm glow of light from the steeple, thank Alan for that too!

Finally, to each and every person who helped tomake this year's Evergreen Festival the best ever (we are on a roll!), we say thank you! It takes an entire congregation to make this happen, and we had pretty near everyone involved! At the risk of omitting key players, we thank especially Kathy Runey, Edie Niles, LindaWentworth, Bea Paisley and Elaine Hansberry, the Crafty Ladies, and Alison Hannan on the keyboard! What a day it was!

Second Sunday JazzMusician of the Month of December:

John Grolnik

December's Second Sunday Jazz featured musician is Don Grolnick, an American jazz pianist, composer, and record producer. As a session musician, he recorded with the likes of Roberta Flack, Bette Midler, Marcus Miller, Linda Ronstadt, David Sanborn, Carly Simon, Steely Dan, and James Taylor.

He was born in Brooklyn in 1947 and began his musical life on accordion but later switched to piano. His interest in jazz began as a child after his father took him to a Count Basie concert.

His bands were the opening act for B.B.King, TheJeff Beck Group, and the Velvet Underground at Boston clubs. This was Grolnick's first foray into rock and blues as a performer, and he began to write within the medium as well. Grolnick died at the age of 48 on June 1, 1996 from Non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~The Christmas Fund
It wasn’t easy picking up the telephone to share with you my present situation. In fact it was one of the most humiliating experiences of my life although it reminded me that grace still happens. Sometimes we as clergy persons lose sight of God’s grace when the negative stuff comes into our lives.""…thanks so much for sharing your time andministry with me. Your most gracious gift is appreciated more than words can say as I continue to live in the 'meantime."
These eloquent words are from a pastor who is the recipient of the caring and concern of those who contribute to the Christmas Fund Special Mission Offering. You have the opportunity to be a part of this ministry that cares for the active and retired clergy and lay employees of the United Church of Christ through your participation in the 2017 Christmas Fund Special Mission Offering. This year's theme is "Shepherding the Light."
On Epiphany Sunday, January 7, 2018 we will bereceiving this special offering.
Envelopes for this special offering will be availablein the back of the Sanctuary and in the vestry.
Please give generously!4
Those Sunday Readings...
Where on earth does Pastor Brad come up with all those scripture readings every week? Well, hegenerally follows The Revised Common Lectionary, a three year cycle of readings. Each of the three years focuses on one of the synopticGospels – Matthew Mark, and Luke – with readings from John mixed in through the year. The Revised Common Lectionary also “assigns” a lesson from the Old Testament, one from the Psalms (also Old Testament, but...) and one from the Epistles – the letters in the New Testament. We usually pick two.
We just finished Year A, reading mostly from Matthew, and are now entering Year B which features readings from Mark. See if you can heara difference!
