ForewordSpring is always an exciting time for the retail sector, bringing with it a new wave of creative energy and a plethora of new fashions and desirables to engage us. We are always pleased to introduce new brands into our retail mix and one of them is Shiatzy Chen, the über-luxe Taiwanese fashion house, whose founder and brand innovator, Madame Wang-Chen Tsai-Hsia, is often referred to as the ‘Coco Chanel of Taiwan’. In this light, we also launch Starhill Fashion Week S/S 2012. Being a true hub of fashion, it is only fitting that Starhill Gallery celebrates this with a week-long extravaganza of fabulous fashion, beautiful people and chic parties – pure fashion-forward fun! Many of our tenants have already confirmed their participation, including Valentino, M Missoni and Kenzo, so I strongly urge all of you to join us for yet another exciting new development in Kuala Lumpur’s style scene, for both retailer and consumer.

March is also the month to celebrate Earth Hour and Ruth Yeoh, YTL Corporation’s Director of Investment, shares with us her insights on safeguarding the environment as well as the Group’s plans for Earth Hour 2012, which takes place on 31 March at 8.30pm. Although we’ve adopted a fashion focus this issue, it doesn’t mean we’ve forgotten about other pleasures, namely luxury and culinary pursuits. Fans of exotic scents would be delighted to know the House of Amouage is all set to open its first standalone store in Starhill Gallery soon, while A-List Atkins dieters can indulge in style at the newly-opened Angus House, which serves fine charcoal-grilled steaks in the Japanese style, on the Explore Floor.

Until the next issue then.

Star Light, Star BrightThe crème de la crème of watchmaking brands converged recently at Starhill Gallery to see who would emerge triumphant during the recent Starhill Watch Awards.Text by Diana Khoo Photos by KK Yong & Corrina Foong

[7.00PM] And so it begins…Unless you happened to be at the watch fairs in Basel or Geneva, it’s a rare sight to see renowned watchmakers and big names in Asia’s watch-retailing and watch-collecting fraternities socialising. But Starhill Gallery’s annual A Journey Through Time horological celebration, arguably Asia’s most fabulous watch and jewellery showcase, is a magnet for watch enthusiasts as well as those who can’t get enough of the finer things in life. More than a watch exhibition, it also fuses the coming-together of fine dining, entertainment and haute lifestyle elements to make it a veritable festival for connoisseurs, beginning with a concert by Latin superstar Julio Iglesias and culminating, nine days later, in a spectacular gala dinner and the presentation of its prestigious Starhill Watch Awards. Guests began arriving as early as 7pm, all dressed up for the occasion, and included Spanish watchmaking maverick, Franc Vila, Singapore’s most celebrated watch collector and horological enthusiast, medical practitioner Dr Bernard Cheong, together with his wife Dolly, and eminent watch journalist and blogger, Su Jia Xian.

[8.30PM] five And very much Alive! As the privileged assembly of guests, including Datuk Dr Victor Wee, Chairman of Tourism Malaysia, and renowned designer Dato’ Jimmy Choo OBE, sat down to dinner, a video showcasing the past four years of the watch exhibition was played and, during his speech, Tan Sri Francis Yeoh, Managing Director of YTL Corporation and creator of A Journey Through Time, commented: “I wanted to do something that was totally different from what the rest of the world was doing. And this year’s theme of ‘Time to Celebrate’ is perfectly appropriate, in keeping with the pursuit of our passion in celebrating time and timelessness in its expression of beauty, craftsmanship and the genius of mechanical precision. We knew it isn’t easy sustaining such an extravagant festival but I’ve always believed in this saying – ‘Be careful of people who daydream because they can make dreams come true.’”

PROFILE

Renowned fashion house Shiatzy Chen brings together tradition and modernity. Wang-Chen Tsai-Hsia, the Taiwanese brand’s Design Director, shares her thoughts on fashion, style and inspiration.

Its fashionable creations fuse contemporary Eastern elegance with luxurious Western craftsmanship and its boutiques can be found in the world’s chic-est addresses – along Paris’ Rue Saint-Honoré, The Bund in Shanghai as well as in Hong Kong’s Peninsula Hotel. Madame Wang-

Chen Tsai-Hsia, the Design Director and brand innovator behind the world-renowned Taiwanese fashion house, Shiatzy Chen, shares her thoughts and secrets about fashion and style, and her personal sources of inspiration.

I love seeing women dress up according to their own personal style and who wear what suits them best; not what they are being told to or what the rest of the world is wearing. I think it is extremely important also for a woman to dress accordingly for the occasion. I believe in the right clothes for the right time, absolutely.

I’m a very busy woman myself, and I always try to wear clothes I can work in. There’s usually never enough time, so I need to pick out and put on my outfits quickly and without too much fuss. As mentioned, I believe in dressing appropriately and will usually also try and find out a little about the host, if it is an important occasion. For example, if he is superstitious about the colour black, I will refrain from wearing it.

The latest addition to my personal wardrobe is a timepiece. I love buying watches as time is very important

to me. I’m not a serious collector but I do like to treat myself to a new watch from time to time.

It’s the Year of the Dragon this year so, naturally, our collection will contain some dragon elements. Look out for delicate dragon print motifs on some of our fabric as well as on our scarves.

The Chinese phrase ‘Hua Xia Xin Zi’ inspired the brand name Shiatzy Chen. It came about as a play on the words, which can be loosely translated as ‘Neo-Chinese’. We thought it quite appropriate for what our label stands for.

The traditional Chinese qipao collar is a signature Shiatzy Chen look. I think it is graceful and elegant.

My favourite sources of inspiration are antique markets. I particularly love Beijing’s Panjiayuan market, Porte de Clignancourt in Paris and Shanghai’s Old Street. The only problem is I always end up buying too much!

Travel is another great source of inspiration, especially to places like Guizhou in China, where the embroidery and tribal work of its minority peoples are both beautiful and fascinating.

Shiatzy Chen's South-East Asia debut takes place at KL's Starhill Gallery.

If I weren’t a designer, I would probably be working in food and beverage. I have, in fact, my own little tea lounge already, called Cha Cha Thé. It’s in Taipei and came about after I noticed how, unlike in Japan, China and Taiwan have no beautifully-packaged tea available, despite a strong tea-drinking and gifting culture. This is something close to my heart as well.

Taipei, where I live and work, is filled with many wonderful places of interest. If you visit, don’t miss the National Palace Museum, which always has amazing on-going exhibitions, and I never fail to visit the museum shop, which offers beautiful books for sale. I also sometimes visit Taipei’s jade market on weekends for inspiration, as well as Yingge, south-west of Taipei, which is also known as the ‘ceramic town’ and whose kilns have been burning for over two centuries. Its pottery is world-famous and what I like about it is that it is also home to many bright, young potters, who create beautiful modern pieces alongside other traditional artists.

The Shiatzy Chen boutique in Starhill Gallery is located at Lot G9 on the Indulge Floor.

THE SNUFF BOTTLE Inspired by 17th-century China’s fascination for this objet d’art and status symbol, Wang-Chen Tsai-Hsia refers to the snuff bottle as the inspiration behind Shiatzy Chen’s 2012 Spring/Summer collection.

Style icons like Jacqueline Kennedy and Audrey Hepburn have also been referenced,

as can be seen in pieces with simple geometric silhouettes and three-quarter

sleeves embellished with oversized buttons. [[

The collection combines translucent glossy organza and shiny

material like satin in a bid to capture the snuff bottle’s multi-layered carved glass beauty. [[

A Beautiful LifeBeauty queen, media darling and dazzling personality-about-town Andrea Fonseka reveals her favourite things about Starhill Gallery.

Statuesque beauty Andrea Fonseka, a former Miss M a l a y s i a / U n i v e r s e , juggles a notoriously b u s y p o r t f o l i o t h a t

Andrea Fonseka favours shopping at Sergio Rossi and Valentino.

Here, she shares some of her secret and not-so-secret favourite things about Starhill Gallery.

My favourite types of cuisine are, undisputably, Japanese and Thai. I think Gonbei San on the Relish Floor of Starhill Gallery serves really good quality Japanese food and all the things I love. I also like Shook! as it offers a vast selection of international cuisines to choose from. It’s quite a perfect dining venue as I oftentimes can’t decide what to have for lunch or dinner. Shook!’s concept works really well for me.

One of my most memorable experiences at Starhill Gallery was when I attended A Journey Through Time, Starhill’s annual year-end watch and jewellery extravaganza. I remember the 2010 event especially as Delta Goodrem was the main draw that night. She was definitely a star performer and it made the evening just so beautiful.

Many times, when I go shopping, I walk into a shop to look for a specific item only to buy another 10 things on impulse while there! At

Starhill Gallery, I particularly love Sergio Rossi, Valentino and Fendi – definitely my favourite stores there.

I also love local fashion and am a really big fan of Khoon Hooi, whose boutique also just happens to be at Starhill Gallery.

I love how the boutiques at Starhill Gallery are very fashion-oriented and offer a wide selection of looks and styles. My personal definition of style is about knowing and wearing what suits you best.

I’ve had many amazing dinners with close friends and family in Starhill Gallery, with most of the meals enjoyed in one of the Feast Village’s many amazing restaurants. Shook!, though, is always a firm favourite.

I always try and save time whenever I can, seeing as my schedule is quite hectic. So, I make it a point to try and combine my beauty rituals together with a spot of pampering. At Starhill Gallery, I like the IPL Skin Centre, which is located on the Pamper Floor. I enjoy being there as I can beautify myself while relaxing at the same time.

Hermès Calibre H 1929 and a series-coupled twin barrel, giving it a mighty power reserve of up to 55 hours. Its special functions also include a retrograde date and high-precision moon phase display. Now, that’s what we call a pocket rocket.

AUDEMARS PIGUETLaunched in 1972, the Royal Oak by Audemars Piguet celebrates 40 years as the world’s first luxury (and still one of the finest) sports watches. Today, holding its own as an authentic contemporary watch icon, it is instantly recognised by its octagonal bezel and eight polished hexagonal screws. In celebration, the manufacture in Le Brassus has introduced a few new versions, all the while respecting the original identity codes. The one we like? The Open-Worked Extra-Thin Royal Oak Tourbillon – a platinum anniversary collector’s item, limited to just 40 pieces, housing the new Calibre 2924 and with a spanking-new 41mm-diameter case, the first of its size within the Royal Oak range.

A LANGE & SÖHNEWaif-ish supermodel Kate Moss may have quipped the famous words ‘Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels’ but it’s a sure bet she didn’t have A Lange & Söhne’s supremely-elegant Saxonia Thin timepiece on her mind. The manufactory’s slimmest watch to date, at only 5.9mm, it embodies all of Lange’s Saxon ideals in a simple, slender profile. Purity and minimalism at its finest. Even John Pawson would surely approve.

JAEGER-LECOULTREThe Atmos epic continues with the new 10-piece limited edition Atmos Marqueterie clock, graced by a faithful reproduction of Gustav Klimt’s The Kiss. Over 1,200 tiny pieces of wood, from Camassari boxwood to madrona burl and Ceylonese lemonwood, and some adorned with gold leaf, grace the case in which the grand maison’s clock steadily and gracefully marks the passage of time. Housed within its protective crystal glass surround, the regulator-type display of the hours and minutes is also accompanied by month and moon phase indications. As a final artistic flourish, a cushion-cut yellow sapphire is enthroned at 60 minutes to mark the celestial zenith.

Ida Lokman, General Manager of Niche Retailing, the purveyor of a wide mix of fashion forward labels including Kenzo, Sergio Rossi and

Valentino at Starhill Gallery, reveals what’s in store for 2012. Text by Mark Lean

Each season, what are the elements you keep in mind when creating the edit for the collections available at Niche Retailing stores? We c o n s t a n t l y i d e n t i f y a n d understand customers’ needs, devising offerings that are valued by those customers. We buy with our regular customers in mind. These individuals know that we, at Niche Retailing, are well-acquainted with their individual styles and tastes. We also touch on the DNA of the brands.

Can you tell us about the store mix at Niche Retailing? Each brand offers customers a wide-ranging portfolio of lifestyle wear, taking one from day to night, casual to formal, and clubs to boardroom. We also have a stimulating range of apparel and accessories for men, women and children. Our retail mix includes multi-brand store LEO, Kenzo Kids, Kenzo, McQ Alexander

McQueen, M Missoni, REDValentino, Sergio Rossi and Valentino. The latest addition to the family is Antoinette, a multi-brand store for women’s ready-to-wear, accessories and leather goods.

What changes have you seen in Malaysia's luxury industry over the years? The radical change is that customers are now very discerning, especially with the rise of the Internet. Everything is now just a click away. Customers seek quality, craftsmanship and functionality. Back then, consumers were less discerning and brands were also willing to offer less value.

Malaysia is in the limelight now with the support of the Ministry of Tourism. More tourists are walking into the stores, encouraged by the fact that the country offers duty-free shopping. Most of them are

equally pleased and satisfied with the price point offered by each brand in Niche Retailing. There is also more competition; Kuala Lumpur is catching up with big fashion cities. Though advertising remains important, it’s also about building long-term relationships. It’s all about retaining customer loyalty. Customer service has to be excellent.

What do customers seek these days? The ultimate shopping experience, not just from the products but also from the services we offer – before sales, during sales and even after sales. They also seek the latest fashions, items that are comfortable and value-for-money products.

We noticed that retailers were focusing on women’s wear; there was less emphasis on men’s shoes and accessories. We created LEO for our male customers as a place to shop and also to relax and unwind. Customer response has been good. The store was created to be both luxurious and cosy. Besides shoes, we are also bringing in a wider range

of accessories. We’re very happy with the progress we’ve made. LEO is the only store of its kind in Malaysia.

In 2012, what can shoppers look forward to from Niche Retailing? We will also launch the women’s equivalent of LEO, Antoinette, a multi-brand store with special selections of women’s accessories and garments. The latter will include brands like Jean Paul Gaultier and Paroche. We will use Antoinette as a platform for customers to shop in comfort and privacy.

Customers can expect the best in service, design, quality and craftsmanship, all combined into an extraordinary experience that is truly relevant, both functionally and emotionally. Niche Retailing will introduce more iconic pieces from each brand. We will bring in the latest Kenzo collection by the brand’s new designers, Humberto Leon and Carol Lim. Added to these are our personalised service and location at Starhill Gallery – Kuala Lumpur’s premier luxury shopping destination.

Ruth Yeoh, Director of Investment in YTL Corporation, speaks on the importance of safeguarding the environment and her plans for this year’s Earth Hour, which takes place on 31 March 2012 at 8.30pm.

Daughter Earth

Earth Hour has always enjoyed an important place in the YTL calendar. What are the plans like for Earth Hour 2012?I bel ieve Earth Hour stands for what YTL has been passionately advocating over the decades – environmental protection, energy efficiency and contributing to sustainable development. We own malls along Singapore’s Orchard Road as well as Kuala Lumpur’s Jalan Bukit Bintang, so encouraging people to think about their energy consumption seems

the right and sensible thing to do. We have received very positive response for our Earth Hour celebrations in both Malaysia and Singapore, and we’ll definitely be looking at continuing our efforts this year and beyond. Across the globe, 36 YTL subsidiaries and properties, from Power Seraya and Wisma Atria in Singapore, to as far as Wessex Water in the UK and Greenleaf Hotel in Niseko Village, Hokkaido, participated in last year’s Earth Hour celebration. And, based on 15 properties in Malaysia and Singapore switching off their lights from

Clockwise, from left; Yeoh on holiday in the Galapagos Islands; Malaysian celebrities like Henry Golding and Deborah Henry turned up to support the Earth Hour celebrations along Jalan Bukit Bintang; Ruth Yeoh speaks at the launch of Earth Hour 2009 in Starhill Gallery.

8.30pm to 10pm alone, YTL successfully cut over 1,298kg of CO² emissions, which is the equivalent of almost a thousand working days of computer usage (based on 7,697 hours of desktop PC usage as calculated by YTL-SV Carbon). We will continue the tradition of having our global properties switch off their lights during Earth Hour, including our hotels, resorts and shopping malls. This year, Kuala Lumpur will also be taking the lead in the lights-out event involving the malls along the Bukit Bintang strip as well as our Earth Hour celebration on Lot 10’s Rooftop.

Last year, the Group also extended the celebration beyond the customary hour to 90 minutes. What was the reason behind it?It was in-line with the ‘60+ Going Beyond the Hour’ message of Earth Hour 2011. Similarly, we also wanted to advocate a proactive approach in being mindful and making a conscious and habitual effort at all times (and not just during Earth Hour) to save the planet we live in. Every bit we do daily, from reducing carbon emissions

to saving electricity and being watchful of our paper usage, adds up to a lot! I was also heartened to observe YTL staff and volunteers, in both Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, turning up in full force to help canvass for donations to support relief efforts for the victims of the Japan earthquake and tsunami, which had happened not long before Earth Hour 2011. The funds were channelled to the Red Cross in Japan and that, for me, meant a lot in going beyond the hour.

So, what can we expect this year, particularly from YTL’s hotels and resorts? There’ll be candlelight dinners across all YTL restaurants and our chefs will create special Earth Hour menus based on low carbon cooking methods, with resulting cuisine that’s just as delicious. We’ll also be placing recycling bins for plastic, paper, glass and batteries at prominent areas within our malls three weeks before Earth Hour and will also be working with shoppers and retailers to recycle and reduce waste; not forgetting our F&B tenants in our malls in both Malaysia and Singapore, with whom we’ll be

Page 32: THE CITY - Starhill Gallerystarhillgallery.com/images/Starhill_Issue02.pdf · 2012-02-22 · designer Dato’ Jimmy Choo OBE, sat down to dinner, a video showcasing the past four

working to create special candlelight dining experiences for the occasion.

What’s your long-term environmental vision, though?I’d love for YTL’s Environmental Division – our directors, employees and agents of the Group – to conduct themselves in a manner that always meets and regularly exceeds expectations of sustainable practices through the mastering of three languages – the languages of God, Man and Machine. Ultimately, we should be good stewards of the earth as we have a wider responsibility, not only to our employees, but also their families, our stakeholders and the wider community.

When did you start becoming interested in the environment and conservation?I always share that I started being a conservationist from as young as the age of five! This is in part to my having excellent parents as mentors. My father, who is the Managing Director of YTL Corporation, always brought me along to beautiful, bio-diverse places in the course of his business and conservation travels. I also remember my father making me plant seedlings on the island of Pangkor Laut, long before it became known as the multiple award-winning luxury travel destination it is today. He mentioned that, in many years’ time, the seeds will grow into trees, contributing to the lush millions-of-years-old rainforest already present on the island. That early exposure planted in me the idea of doing more for the environment, eventually leading to me starting up an Environmental Division within the Group – something I’ve always wanted to do since graduating. I am also a Trustee of two environmental organisations in my personal capacity. As my work strongly revolves around the environment and conservation, it has helped deepen my understanding of these matters, both with work-related projects and during my conservation field trips.

What are you working on now?Sustainability is an area I am very interested in and have a natural inclination for as it not only helps YTL’s stable of businesses go clean and green, but also helps others do the same. I set up an in-house Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) Consultancy, YTL-SV Carbon, in 2007 and I am also the youngest Trustee at RARE Conservation and Reef Check Malaysia, both of which are dedicated to protecting natural resources on land as well as in the oceans. My mission and that of the YTL Group

Sustainability Committee can best be summarised by the following:

•Providing services and products that meet customer’s expectations while minimising the impact on the environment.•Furthering conservation efforts in Malaysia, Asia and beyond.•Reducing materials consumption and use recycled material for products and packaging where practical.•Recycling all waste materials.•Reaching a target of zero waste to landfills and incinerators. Our journey continues positively in this respect.

On an individual level, what do you think are the most important and basic steps one can take in order to be more proactive with regards to the environment? It has to be a personal and conscious decision on one’s part to care for the environment. It’s a choice! But one can start by lowering one’s consumption, waste as well as energy consumption habits both at home and at work. Personally, I recycle and have taken public transport where possible since my student days. I carpool to work and have also joined my local Residents Association, where I am in charge of recycling and environmental

activities. Again, the emphasis is on choice and it should not feel as if it is being forced upon the individual.

How will you be celebrating Earth Hour, personally?By being there at YTL’s Earth Hour celebrations and making sure people close to me participate in this initiative, be it staying home and switching off their lights or joining in our celebrations and activities. The point I want to get across is that life can go on, even when the lights go off!

And what, ultimately, inspires your work?I ’ve been blessed to have witnessed Nature’s beauty from an early age and that has inspired me to do what I do now at YTL. Also, working for a family company makes you treat it as more than just a job – it becomes your duty as well as your responsibility. It was my father who taught me that, ‘To whom much is given, much is required’, which is from the Bible. I joined the family company in 2006 at the age of 24, the same age as my father was when he first started working in YTL. My father is a huge influence on my life and I’ll always remember his teachings on how to do business the right way, and this means the responsible way, the Christian way. After all, good business is responsible business!

YTL Corporation celebrates Earth Hour this 31st March 2012.

Angus House serves up beautiful meats, charcoal-grilled to perfection in the Japanese way.

There are quite a few cu is ines in tegra l ly linked with the culture o f t u c k i n g i n t o a juicy steak, including t h e B r a z i l i a n a n d

Argentine, from which the delights of churrascaria and asado stem. For me, however, the Japanese have also perfected the art of cultivating and serving beef. Wagyu, after all, literally means ‘Japanese cow’, and the mere mention of names like Matsuzaka and Kobe to any connoisseur worth his fleur de sel would immediately conjure up visions of beautifully-marbled beef, unmatched in tenderness and rich flavour. On past trips to Japan, there would, invariably, be the setting aside of one day (at least) specifically for enjoying gyu in myriad forms – tenderloin, sirloin, ribeye and the like. Hence, you can imagine my delight when I learnt Angus

House, a Japanese-style charcoal steak restaurant, has opened in Starhill Gallery.

Upon entering, the décor is simple and unassuming – white walls, dark woods and, happily, for the discreet diner, three private rooms seating groups of four up to 10. The curious may also choose to sit near the charcoal-burning open kitchen, where you can watch the chefs grilling and broiling away on special brass plates ordered in from Japan. The menu, as expected, is dominated by beef, although pescatarians would find an equal number of things to delight the palate – baked oysters, several pastas (including an intriguing-sounding spaghetti with abalone and salmon roe), mixed grilled seafood p la t ters and sa lmon carpaccio. The á la carte menu is just as extensive, although, given

the crunch-conscious times we live in, the set meals are equally and amazingly good value (not to m e n t i o n m a k i n g o rd e r i n g a b re e z e ) , co m p r i s i n g o f a n appetiser, unlimited servings of soup and salad, your choice of rice or bread with the main course and dessert.

We began with three of Angus House’s signatures – 250g of Master Kobe sirloin, served medium-well, an alluring strip of Wagyu tenderloin and a Black Angus ribeye steak, served blue-rare as was my preference. The meats were all succulent, juicy and bursting with bovine flavour, which was enhanced by a glug of the restaurant’s special Japanese brown sauce, a blend of white radish, apple, mirin and shoyu. I particularly loved the latter, which resembled and tasted like delicate strips of velvet. The lovely thing about Angus House

is the steaks are enjoyed plainly and aren’t drowned in rich, heavy sauces. All there is on offer here is the umami-rific Japanese brown sauce as well as a light pepper sauce. Here, the meats are the stars of the meal and the restaurant’s expert way of charcoal-grilling ensures a lovely smoky flavour and texture – all you need in a beautiful steak, really.

If you’re dining á deux here, another entrée to order would have to be the grilled lobster. Angus House uses local Sabah lobster, freshly-flown in from the South China Sea. Served with watercress and garden vegetables, it is a treat to savour, with the grill successfully locking in all its briny sweetness and clean flavours. And, given the emphasis on red meat at Angus House, it would be remiss of us not to highlight the restaurant’s above-average wine list, which includes choice picks from

Its latest scent, Honour, is inspired by Giacomo Puccini’s great and tragic opera, Madama Butterfly. Aside from its diverse fragrances, which includes the classic Amouage Gold, Ubar, Dia, Ciel and Cirrus, Amouage has also extended its fragrance experience to include a bath and body collection, comprising of soaps, hand creams, bath gels and body creams. Luxury lovers would also do well to take note of its exquisite candles and new range of travel accessories. Amouage’s latest standalone boutique is set to open shortly in Kuala Lumpur’s Starhill Gallery.

Founded over a quarter of a century ago in the Sultanate of Oman, perched on the south-eastern quarter of the Arabian Peninsula, the House of Amouage never ceases to

draw inspiration from its birthplace. A land of astounding natural beauty – replete with mountain ranges, tranquil wadis and azure waters in which whales, dolphins and turtles play – Oman is the ultimate reference point to which the legendary perfume house looks to in order to create its exquisite collection of fragrances.

Hailed as among the finest and most exotic scents in the world, they are, in short, fit for queens and princesses. Created using only the finest, rarest and most luxurious ingredients in the world, including precious frankincense, myrrh and sandalwood, Amouage blends traditional Middle Eastern ingredients for perfume together with the fine art of fragrance creation overseen by internationally-recognised perfumers in Paris and Grasse, France, and its creative director, Christopher Chong.

Its name is said to be the fusion of the French word for love, amour, and the Arabic word for waves. Its first fragrance, Amouage Gold, was, in fact, developed by the celebrated ‘nose’, Guy Robert, who often referred to the moment

If your face is your fortune (and why shouldn’t it be?), start augmenting your interest right now with a session or two of the immensely-uplifting Cryostamp Therapy. Available at the new women-only Phillip Wain fitness and beauty centre, located on the Pamper Floor of Starhill Gallery, the treatment is one of the

star attractions at the spanking-new 15,000 sq ft space. With 39 treatment rooms to choose from, two aerobics studios and a host of facilities that include a fully-equipped gymnasium, steam, sauna, lockers and shower rooms, it’s the perfect new place in which to recharge or refresh yourself without leaving the heart of Kuala Lumpur’s Golden Triangle. Although a wide range of treatments are offered, including slimming treatments, facials and massages, the Cryostamp therapies are indisputably one of the most popular. Cryotherapy can be loosely defined as the local or general use of low temperatures to treat or cure specific parts of the body.

Using a combination of Cryophoresis, a blend of cold therapy and electroporation, this treatment provides effective and visible results, which may be noticed after a single session. During the one-hour session, your therapist proceeds to execute a series of cold and hot treatments, beginning with a massage to ease muscle tension around the neck and shoulder areas, followed by electroporation, both delivered using a special probe and a low-frequency micro current, to ensure facial muscles are stimulated. Treatment temperatures on the probe head may range from a comfortably warm 35°C to -7°C. The heat therapy works by improving circulation around the eye and neck areas, while the cold treatment, coupled with electroporation and current procedure, works effectively to tighten muscles and give a lifting effect to the skin. As a final, pampering touch, a full face mask is applied to ensure skin is infused with hydrating benefits.

It might sound too good to be true, but results can be seen almost immediately, depending on one’s skin condition, with the most noticeable being an increase in skin clarity, tighter pores and, if experienced over multiple sessions, an improvement in skin texture and elasticity. Phillip Wain offers Cryostamp therapies for the face as well as eye and neck areas, with a 44-minute trial session priced at RM288 and a full 55-minute session at RM388 each time. And, once you’re done, nip over to the nearby Health Juice Bar for a refreshing spirulina cocktail, a Phillip Wain specialty, made pleasurably palatable with orange, red and green apples and banana, and a powerful strengthener for the immune system. The perfect way to cap a pampering day out.

Phillip Wain opens at Starhill Gallery’s Pamper Floor in March 2012. For more information, tel: 603 2092 2200.

Spanish Churro-scariaThe piping hot churro lands in Kuala Lumpur and is now available at Starhill Terrace's STS Cafe.

Authentic Spanish breakfast

chocolate dip.

There’s a new buzz at Starhill Gallery, with the unveiling of STS Cafe – an outdoor annexe to the existing Starhill Tea Salon, a stylish spot for gourmet coffees, teas and juices. Pick up a cool drink or a snack between meetings or shopping expeditions. Or, sample delicious churros made on the spot.

They are best savoured when dipped in chocolate, making for a tasty morning or mid-afternoon treat. The Spanish delicacy was presumably brought to Europe from China by the Portuguese during the Ming dynasty. Now, the breezy open-air cafe is the only place in Kuala Lumpur where

you’ll find an authentic Spanish breakfast composed of fresh churros with chocolate dip, just-squeezed orange juice and freshly made coffee. If you’re not pressed for time, grab a spot on a comfortable bright orange lounge chair, take a breather, and watch the world go by.
