The papers consist of research notes and literary manuscripts 1951-1961. Mr. E. B. Long, author and professor of American Studies at the University of Wyoming, was in charge of the research program for Mr. Catton’s Centennial History of the Civil War. Mr. Long’s typewritten research notes are arranged chronologically and geographically and cover economics, politics and battles from 1820-1865. Mr. Catton’s literary manuscripts, Glory Road, 1952; A Stillness at Appomattox, 1953; U.S. Grant and the American Military Tradition, 1954; Banners at Shenandoah, 1955; This Hallowed Ground, 1956; Grant Moves South, 1960; The Coming Fury, 1961, are part of the collection. Scope and Content Note Continued

Mr. Catton was the recipient of letters and diaries (1861-1865) from readers who donated their family’s papers for his research use. These letters and diaries, which are part of the collection, were written by Union troops concerning war activities. Some of the Union troops were stationed in South Carolina. Newspaper clippings of the same period, chiefly from The Chicago Tribune and Cincinnati Daily Gazette are included in the collection. Box # 1-27 Research notes 1951-1961 arranged chronologically and geographically cover economics, politics and battles from 1820-1865 with emphasis on the Civil War Period.

Mentions poor Union leadership (May 19, June 27, Aug. 9, 1863), the South, hopes Rebels will invade Pennsylvania to shake them (P.A.) up. Wilbur discusses field practice vs. medical practice; dislikes field practice and wants to be in a hospital in Baltimore. Many letters advise his wife to rent the house in Boston and move to Baltimore.

Written to her cousins in Philadelphia, Mrs. Payne describes life after the Civil War. Topics include slavery, lack of slaves, coping on the plantation, social life, family members, politics, Baptist religion.

Loss of property by Private Robert Hardwick who left battle of Chickamauga, 1863 Sept. 19 and was found in December without arms and no explanation as to loss.
