Circulatory system

• The circulatory system is made up of your heart and blood vessels.

• The heart pumps blood to all areas of your body.

• The blood carries oxygen and nutrients to your body

The heart

• The heart is a muscular organ inside the rib cage, between the lungs.

• It’s about the size of your fist (closed hand)

Page 4: The circulatory system

But the heart muscle is special because of what it does.

• The heart sends blood around your body.

• The blood provides your body with the oxygen and nutrients it needs.

• It also carries away waste.

Heart Parts

• The heart is made up of four different areas, and each of these areas is called a chamber.

• There are two chambers on each side of the heart. One chamber is on the top and one chamber is on the bottom.

Chambers

• The two chambers on top are called the atrium .

• The heart has a left atrium and a right atrium.

• The two chambers on the bottom are called the ventricles.

• The heart has a left ventricle and a right ventricle.

Septum

• Running down the middle of the heart is a thick wall of muscle called the septum.

• The septum's job is to separate the left side and the right side of the heart.

Blood

• The blood moves through many tubes called arteries, veins and capillaries.

• Which together are called blood vessels.

Page 9: The circulatory system

Blood vessels

• These blood vessels are attached to the heart.

• The blood vessels that carry blood away from the heart are called arteries.

• The ones that carry blood back to the heart are called veins.

• The tiny blood vessels that connect the smallest arteries to the smallest veins are called capillaries.

Blood

• Blood is a red liquid that flows through blood vessels.

• Blood contains liquid plasma and solid blood cells.

• There are three types of blood cells:

• Red blood cells• White blood cells and• Platelest.

Page 11: The circulatory system

Blood composition

• Platelets help to form a solid clot when there is a cut in a blood vessel.

• Red blood cells carry oxygen. They can also carry some carbon dioxide.

• White blood cells fight infections in the body.
