Gospel: Mark 10:35-45 Two of the disciples ask Jesus that they be allowed to sit at his right and left side when he comes into his glory. Jesus explains that they should not be concerned with their position. Instead they should concern themselves with serving others just as Jesus was planning to serve many in giving his own life for their sins. “Since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast to our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who has similarly been tested in every way, yet without sin. So let us confidently approach the throne of grace to receive mercy and to find grace for timely help. We might think of a high priest as portrayed in an epic biblical movie, or recall the role of the father of John the Baptist. What a different image the letter to the Hebrews presents, revealing Jesus in this sacrificial role, identifying totally with humankind, like us in ‘all things but sin.’

We should find comfort in this passage, as He is described as one who sympathizes with our weakness, not condemning but understanding. The author encourages us, directing the way we address the Christ with total confidence. If we do so, we find two great girls, mercy, which Pope Francis tells us is God’s greatest girl to us, and the timely help we need to do and be better. A question: How do I approach Jesus at this moment. With confidence, seeking mercy, finding strength in His help?

Respect Life October is Respect Life Month. As noted in last week's bulletin, the theme is "Every Life is Worth Living". This year we would like to ask all our parishioners to participate by submitting photos of your family members doing various things that depict the Respect Life theme. The photos could be of teenagers participating in volunteer work, families spending time together, ultrasounds, grandparents and their grandchildren. We would like to have pictures that represent all stages of life from beginning to end. They will be on display in the commons are for all to view and enjoy through the month and possibly longer. We pray all will participate in this parish initiative. You may bring in your pictures anytime, but the sooner the better. Place your photos in the basket provided on the table under the Respect Life bulletin board in the commons area. Thank you and God bless.
