Rev. Kelley of Cohoes was a priest during WWI, and local hero

who devoted his life to God, his church, friends, strangers, and

enemies. He devoted his time after the war to help soldiers return

successfully to civilian life. Fr. Kelley was instrumental in guiding

our government and various civic organizations, on how best to

help Veterans. Rev. Kelley poured himself out in service to others,

while silently suffering permanent lung damage from being gassed in the battles of the

Hindenburg Line in Northern France, in 1918.

The Friends of Rev. Francis Kelley Society is a Catholic men’s organization, established in

2013. Society members perform corporal works of mercy primarily focused on aging

disabled veterans with home maintenance, modifications, and items to assist them in

their daily life.

Each member’s goal is to emulate Fr. Kelley’s example, by honoring local, ordinary

Veterans who have done exceptional things in combat - and who, upon their return,

have also served significantly in their communities.

Society members do community-based fundraising year round (and personally

contribute) to support their veterans’ outreach. They Honor the name of God, and

protect its use. The Society helps every veteran who seeks their assistance regardless of

race, color, creed, or other attributes.

Friends of Rev. Francis A. Kelley award the prestigious, Rev. Kelley Annual Hometown

Hero Award in May at the East Greenbush YMCA, and host a Hometown Heroes’

banquet during the first week of November at a local venue.

Attention men of St. Joseph Church: If you have an interest in serving our local veterans with

your time, talents, and treasures, please contact Paul Coffey, or Rev. James Sidoti. We have a

lot of veterans’ memorials on the parish plaque in the vestibule. We pray for the repose of their

souls. Now we can serve others in their memory. What a great way to honor them.

The Carmelite Community of St. Joseph Church, Troy

The Carmelite Shield

The floor is done, replete with the stunning Carmelite Shield pictured

below. As a Catholic community administered by Carmelites, it is important to

understand the symbols contained in the shield.

The following phrase appears in the brown scroll at

the bottom,

“ZELO ZELATUS SUM PRO DOMINO DEO EXERCITUUM!”“ZELO ZELATUS SUM PRO DOMINO DEO EXERCITUUM!”“ZELO ZELATUS SUM PRO DOMINO DEO EXERCITUUM!”“ZELO ZELATUS SUM PRO DOMINO DEO EXERCITUUM!”

Which means:

With zeal have I been zealous for With zeal have I been zealous for With zeal have I been zealous for With zeal have I been zealous for

the Lord God of Hoststhe Lord God of Hoststhe Lord God of Hoststhe Lord God of Hosts!

The three stars signify Elias, Eliseus, and the Blessed

Mother, Mary. These three historic figures encompass

the Carmelite way of life, which is both contemplative

and prophetic. The brown within the shield represents

the Carmelite habit, the white represents the white cloak of the Carmelite habit, and the

shield is adorned with the crown of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel and the twelve stars. The

twelve stars behold the mystery of our past, present and future, reminiscent of the twelve

tribes of Israel, and the twelve holy Apostles of Christ Jesus, but also reminding us of

the Great Mother of God, Queen of Heaven, crowned with twelve stars. Finally, the

hand which grasps the fiery sword is the great sword of Elias (Elijah), the prophet, who

challenged the false prophets in the Old Testament, claiming victory for our God

against false prophets and idols.

We would like to extend our deepest thanks to Paul Coffey, Sacristan and Clerk of

Projects for St. Joseph Church, all of our volunteers who worked so diligently on

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day 2018 to remove the old flooring and prep the area for

installation, and of course, Capital Floor Pros’ Christian and Paul Etzel.

We would also like to thank all of you who donated and sacrificed to replace the

crumbling, buckling linoleum with beautiful and durable porcelain tiles. Thank you!
