This has been quite a year so far and nothing that anyone of us would have
expected. As the golf season is up in full swing, I must say that the staff and
management of Cripple Creek handled this pandemic with such dedication and
professionalism with the least amount of impact to our members. Brian Trout has
stayed on top of the Governor’s guidelines and communicating to the members
with clear and concise instructions. Great job Brian. Understand that Glen has a
limited staff watching our expenses but continues to keep our course the best in
the area. Thanks Glen. The food and beverage stepped up with great lunches and
dinners via takeout. Great job Andy. In addition, thank you to our members for
your patience and supporting the takeout venue. The generosity of you, our
members, has been outstanding with donations and increased gratuities. As you all
know, they do have reduced hours and less volume, so your generosity is greatly
appreciated. As a side note, you all should know that our House and Pro Shop
staff stepped up and worked with Glen on the course and on any task that needed
some help. This is a true, dedicated team that is second to none.
That said, we are not out of the woods. Keep doing what you are doing. Glen is
operating with a reduced staff and doing a great job on the Golf course. We had
the raised cups and then went to the lift up slider on the flagstick. Currently we do
not have any Capital improvements planned for the near future and Glen was not
able to purchase any new equipment. On the House side all events have been
cancelled through July, so far. This is a good revenue generator throughout the
year, and we hope we can get back to some schedule as I know our members
enjoy these functions. Andy also had to setup and manage a process for using the
pool and keeping it clean and safe. I know this has been unsettling at times, but
thanks to your patience, everyone can enjoy the outdoors.
Here’s where you all can continue to help Glen and his staff. Whether you are
carrying or using you own pushcart, please take a bottle of mix and fill in your
divots and any others you see. Follow the cart signs and when riding to your ball,
ride on the cart path or up the fairway. Do not ride in the rough as much as
possible. Last, but not least, pick up your tees. Pounding them into the ground
makes no sense. If you can bend down to put it in, you can bend down to take it
back out or toss it into the rough. The tee box mower does not like tees. The
blades are extremely sharp which is why our tee boxes look
so perfect. In addition, I took a picture of a constant offender
that uses the pictured tee and pounds it into the ground. I
have plucked out at least a dozen of these over the last 6
weeks, plus many others. If you see them, please pluck them
out, but to the offenders, please stop doing it. Glen would greatly appreciate it.
Stay healthy. Enjoy our great Country Club and thanks again for your continued
support. The board, management and staff appreciate keeping this club the best in
the area.

CCWGA 18 HOLE by Cynthia Hunsberger
Well, here it is July and the only thing that seems "normal" at this point is
change! We appreciate everyone's patience through the past four months. The
officers and committee chairs have been working hard trying to keep up with the
ever changing restrictions. We know things can be very frustrating at times but
hopefully there won't be the dreaded Covid spike and we can continue moving
back to the old normal. I never thought I'd be writing an article about things like
normal, restrictions, Covid spikes and patience!
We are continuing Ladies Day events according to this years handbook with
9:00 shotgun starts until further notice. If you have not picked up your copy of the
handbook there are still copies available in the locker room, help yourself. Just
remember they have not been "Covid" updated. Most of the Important Dates are not accurate.
Some new dates are: Ladies Club Championship July 24 & 25
Ladies Member Guest August 21 & 22
These two events are open to all lady golfing members of the club who can play during
scheduled times. Both events are flighted and handicapped. More information about the
Member Guest will be sent out soon.
Summer is officially here and the weather is really heating up. Please take precautions when
playing golf in the heat of the day. Hydrate before playing, during play and after. Do not
hydrate with anything containing caffeine; sports drinks are best but plain water works
too. Extreme heat can also cause your energy levels to drop also, so pack fruit, or some sort of
snack to keep your energy up enough to play 17 & 18! If someone you are playing with is
experiencing heat exhaustion call the Pro Shop. It is best if you do not let them drive the cart,
have someone come and get them. Be careful out there, no one is immune to heat exhaustion.

CCWGA 9 HOLE by Diane Creager
Nine Hole Ladies have resumed their 10 o’clock shotgun on Tuesday mornings, however, only
a limited number of tee times are available. A sign up sheet is posted on the bulletin board in
the golf shop a week in advance and on a first come basis. Ryan does the pairings on Monday
afternoon, so if you have signed up and must cancel, please do it on Monday before noon. If
you wake up ill on Tuesday, please call the pro shop. We do have a wait list each week. This
year we are alternating between the front and back nine each week.
We have two invitations to play at other clubs and there will be sign up sheets relating to these
events as the time gets closer. Plantation Lakes ( not Peninsula Lakes) and Kings Creek are
both scheduled for September, but COVID could change the events or dates. We will keep you
posted with updated material.
Jane Parker is reserving tee-times on Monday mornings for the nine hole ladies, and Diane
Huebner is reserving tee-times on Thursday mornings. If you wish to play with other nine hole
ladies in addition to our Tuesday play, call the golf shop and ask them to add you to these tee
times.
If you would like to order a name tag, please contact me at: [email protected], and let me
know the exact spelling. The cost of the name tag is $10.

GOLF COMMITTEE REPORT by Kent Sanderson
Remember the good old days (about a month ago) when you could “hole” a putt by ramming it
into a raised cup or slightly grazing a raised cup? Well it was good for our egos as most of us
posted some lower scores and our handicaps went down. Even though we were instructed by
the USGA to post the most likely score for each hole, it was hard to deny ourselves the birdie
or par save that we convinced ourselves “may have gone in the hole”. Now it is back to reality
as we do actually have to hole putts once again. Nonetheless it is good to be back to golf as it
was intended to be.
It is also great to have rakes available, flagsticks removable if one chooses, all of the stations
on the practice range in use, golf carts and pushcarts available, and golf events being held. Not
that everyone shouldn’t use appropriate caution in deciding what to touch and how closely to
interact with the other golfers while COVID-19 is still a risk, but we do have options.
Speaking of golf events, I wanted to focus Cripple Creek golfers’ attention on the upcoming
Club Championships for both Ladies and Men. The Ladies’ Club Championship will held on
Friday and Saturday, July 24th & 25th. The Men’s Club Championship will begin with
qualifying for the Championship Flight the weekend of July 25th. The top 4 qualifiers will
complete for the Club Championship on Saturday August 1. All other Men’s contestants will
compete to become Flight Champions on Friday and Saturday, July 31 & August 1. I would
like to encourage all eligible Lady and Men golfers to support our fine club by entering the
Club Championship. Traditionally this tournament has had a LOW participation rate. Why???
This is the most prestigious individual golf event at Cripple Creek! Oh, to be able to say “I am
the Cripple Creek Club Champion in my flight!” -- there is nothing better. For Senior golfers
(I am one) who may be thinking “I will just wait to participate in the Senior Club
Championship”, why not do both? It is largely the same cast of characters in both
tournaments. I look forward to seeing a large field of participants for both the Ladies’ and
Men’s Club Championships!
Finally just a reminder to please fill your divots, repair your ball marks on the greens, and post
your score in GHIN for every round played. As for filling your divots, many golfers are using
their own pushcarts or carrying their bags. If your pushcart or bag is not already equipped with
a container of divot repair mix, please add one. The Pro Shop has containers available for
members to purchase at cost, or you can just use an empty Gatorade bottle instead. Please do
your part to keep our wonderful course in tip-top condition.

Congratulations to Mark Dieste who had a hole in one on January 11, 2020 on hole #13. Witnesses: Ann Rauskauskus and Paula Dieste.
2020 RALLY FOR THE CURE TOURNAMENT CANCELLED
In an unprecedented move it has been decided to cancel this year’s Rally for the
Cure Golf Tournament. The perfect storm of COVID-19 health concerns coupled
with the crippling economic blow to our local businesses has left us with limited
options. This wildly popular event with the Ladies Only Pink on the Patio the
night before the golf tournament has been hosted at Cripple Creek for the past 23
years. This year we must consider the health and safety of our potential players
and with uncertainly over the restrictions placed on food service, golfing carts,
social distancing and the looming worry of any roll-back restrictions in the event
of a COVID surge we feel it necessary to cancel and look toward 2021.
I would propose that all those members who were donating their time to putting on this event,
or who were looking forward to the auction or the Pink on the Patio to write a check to
Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition (DBCC) and send it to the Cripple Creek Golf Shop. We
will collect those checks and around the time of the original tournament (mid-August) we will
try to schedule a luncheon to invite the DBCC rep, Connie Holdridge to present the annual
donation on behalf of Cripple Creek. I hope everyone will be as generous as in years past and
will anticipate a return to a great event in 2021.
Regards,
Linda Zadjura, Tournament Chair

I hope that my fellow members are enjoying the new landscaped
and hardscaped area adjacent to the hole #10 tee box. Thanks to
Board for letting me sponsor that improvement (including the
plaque) in memory of my wife, Nancy, and in gratitude to our
friends at CCGC, to Brian for shepherding the process, and to
Glen and the rest of the team for a great execution of the plan.
Nancy and I joined CCGC in 1990 with the goal to take up golf as
a shared hobby and as a way to get more use of the home we
bought in Bethany Beach in 1987. Although our primary joy of owning the home was from
entertaining family members (almost all of whom live in the Wilmington area), without
children of our own, we had time for golf when we were alone. We joined our Club in the
Alexandria area at about the same time. We started slowly as occasional golfers, but, after
retiring from teaching in 1998 and being befriended by some other kind lady members at our
home Club who took her under their wings, Nancy quickly became the far more active and
better golfer in the family. She was known by many as the “lady in yellow” (yellow tops,
yellow hats and, most importantly, total yellow golf bag). The yellow reflected her sunny
spirit. Golf became an important part of Nancy’s routine and probably helped her deal with a
husband that, at least until she was diagnosed with leukemia in early 2015, spent way too much
time in the office.
Nancy always claimed to not be “competitive” and to play golf just for “fun”, but she actually
cared about the game and had great joy when she played well. She was definitely not a big
hitter and had a swing almost as unorthodox as mine, but she was persistent and had the best
Texas wedge game of any golfer I ever saw. The golf was great for her, but Nancy’s real joy
and passion from golf were the friends she made playing it. Those friendships and our fellow
members defined CCGC for her and are what made her keep coming back. I always knew that
we had many great friends at CCGC, but I really understood it and was overwhelmed by the
outpourings of condolences and support from them after Nancy died last July. I will never
forget that. The membership at CCGC in general, and our friends in particular, are what make
CCGC the great club that it is.
Nancy was My Girl for 52 years (46 married) since 11th grade. I love her and miss her very
much. Again, I hope that you enjoy the new feature in her memory.

NOMINEES FOR BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Below are the bio's for the four candidates running to fill the three open board positions this
year. If you are an eligible Full Golf voting member you will receive a ballot which must be
returned to the club or in person at the annual meeting scheduled for September 12, 2020. In
order for your ballot to be valid you must cast a vote for each of the open positions. (eg. three
in 2020).
Bill Peterson
Although Mary and I have been members for only the last year, I knew
this was a special club. The staff and fellow members are friendly and
always willing to help or answer questions. From our first interaction
with club staff, there was no doubt about becoming a full member
(even without the complimentary golf round).
I am a licensed Nursing Home Administrator for the State of Delaware and a graduate of the
University of Delaware with a degree in Sociology/Healthcare Administration. In 2019, after
nearly 40 years working in healthcare, it was time to retire. I have served as a Support Service
Administrator, Deputy Director and Division Director in both a Hospital and Long-Term Care
setting. I was the Administrator during the start up of the only pediatric Nursing Home in
Delaware. I finished my career as Division Director\Administrator of the Delaware Veterans
Home. These career opportunities provided me with experience in contract negotiations, labor
management, budget, revenue management, capital program budgets, project management and
logistics planning.
I am a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Administrators, Past National President of
the National Association of State Veterans Homes, staff member for the Friends of Delaware
Veterans, Past Master Lafayette Lodge #14 Wilmington, Delaware and 32-degree member of
the Scottish Rite.
I would consider it a true honor to be a member of the Board of Directors. I look forward to
continue building on the success of the club and be part of the planning to ensure future
generations can enjoy the benefits we all enjoy today because of the vision of the Board of
Directors, the members and staff.

Originally from the state of Oklahoma, I have very much enjoyed being a
resident of South Bethany, DE and a Cripple Creek full golf member since
2014. It has been such a pleasure to be a part of the Cripple Creek
membership and to have met so many quality people and avid golfers here.
I received a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering with honors from The University of
Oklahoma in 1978, then completed an interesting and challenging 35-year career with
ExxonMobil in technical and management positions within its Refining, Marketing and
Pipeline organizations.
While at ExxonMobil, I served in various United Way campaign leadership roles and
volunteered with a number of the local United Way agencies. I also co-chaired the industry oil
spill cooperative in Charleston, SC while serving as Superintendent of Exxon’s product
handling and storage facility there. Since moving to Delaware in 2014 I have served as a
volunteer for the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control.
I have served on the Cripple Creek Golf Committee since 2015 and began chairing the
committee last year. It has been an excellent experience working with the Golf Committee and
doing all that we can to enhance the golf event schedule and overall golfing experience at
Cripple Creek. We are always looking for good ideas, so please reach out to me or any of the
Golf Committee members. I have also been a part of Cripple Creek’s Adopt-a-Hole program
since 2015, and along with my partners we have supported Glen MacDonald’s outstanding
grounds crew to provide the best possible playing conditions on Hole #8, one of my favorite
holes on the course.
In 2016 I was so fortunate to have met Leslie Wells who was also a recent transplant to
Delaware. Last September, many of our friends and family witnessed our wedding vows and
helped us celebrate our marriage at the Cripple Creek clubhouse. Leslie Sanderson is now a
proud member of Cripple Creek, has begun playing with the Ladies 9-holers, and looks
forward to making many new Cripple Creek friends.
In closing, I would be honored to serve on Cripple Creek’s Board of Directors if elected by the
membership and will work hard to support our fine organization.

My wife Cynthia and I have been members at Cripple Creek since 2006. I
retired in June 2008 from Hercules Incorporated. I received a B.S. in
accounting from Temple University and an MBA in finance from St
Joseph’s University. I am a retired CPA and a Vietnam Veteran.
During my career at Hercules I held positions in tax, accounting and finance including Vice
President of Finance for the Specialty Chemicals Division, Project Manager for the divestiture
of Hercules’ $450 million Aerospace Division and Director of International Finance which
included managing international credit. I was part of the management team in Europe for three
years with responsibility for finance and tax in eleven countries. I retired as Director of Real
Estate, responsible for world-wide real estate operations including the divestiture of
environmentally challenged excess properties. I was a member of the Board of Directors and
Treasurer of Hercules Country Club.
Cynthia is President of the Cripple Creek Women’s Golf Association and a member of the
Greens and Golf Committees. I am currently a member of the Long Range Steering Team and
have been a member of the Finance Committee since 2008. I previously served on the Board
for six years as Treasurer and as President (2013-2015). We are year round residents of
Cripple Creek and very active participants in club events. I will strive to represent all
members and use my experience to help the club continue to operate in a financially
responsible manner.
Paul Schaffran
Rita and I have been members of Cripple Creek Country Club for the fifteen
years that we have lived in Cripple Creek. I have been a member of House
Committee and Golf Committee over the 15 years as a Cripple Creek
Member.
Work experience: I worked for IBM in various management and staff positions over a
40-year career. My last position was Program Manager - Process Re-Engineering. I retired in
2015 and called back in 2016 to IBM Global Finance where I am still employed as a part-time
contractor.
Education: Bachelor of Science – Business Administration SUNY Empire State College
Over the 15 years as a member have seen the club continually grow as the premier private club
in the area. It would be an honor to serve as Board member and help Cripple Creek continue to
grow and continue to be the great country club it is.
