To say with Scrooge: "I will live in the Past, the Present, and the Future!" Scrooge repeated, as he scrambled out of bed. "The Spirits of all Three shall strive within me. Oh Jacob Marley! Heaven, and the Christmas Time be praised for this! I say it on my knees, old Jacob; on my knees! !" (163) “. . . he knew what path lay straight before him, and he took it” (167).

For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness. What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death. But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life. For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord (Romans 6: 20- 22 KJV).

What Did What Did NotNot Happen: Happen:

Scrooge does not skip and dance about the streets of London (he does that in the private of his own chambers).

He does not lead a parade of Christmastime revelers to the Cratchet home for a huge celebratory dinner.

He does not cancel all his debts He does not make Bob Cratchet his partner.

Why is this important? Why is this important?

All of this has been dramatized in one version of The Carol or another because the dramatist is in shorthand trying to illustrate the complete new life imbued with joy which has come to Ebenezer Scrooge.

The fact is, however, that these extreme and in some ways insane acts undermine one of Dickens’ most potent points

Just as Scrooge was not as much a villain as many have portrayed him, neither was he a mad philanthropist. His behavior is as sane and as plausible as his conversion. When depicted in the mad way it often is, the modern world is

allowed to scoff The Carol’s lesson off as “seasonal sentimentality.”

For Dickens’ work to have its true potency, this can now be allowed.

We are all Scrooge in our loss and potential rescue..

Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Shen, and called its name Ebenezer, saying, ‘Thus far the Lord has helped us’ ” (1 Samuel 7:12).

The word Ebenezer comes from the Hebrew words ’Eben hà-ezer (eh’-benhaw-e’-zer), which simply mean “stone of help” ( Enhancened).

Page 12: The Christmas Carol as Christian Truth “The End of It” Session Seven: Jan. 4, 2015.

When Robert Robinson wrote his lyrics in in 1758 “he followed the word Ebenezer with the phrase, “Here by Thy great help I’ve come.”

An Ebenezer, then, is simply a monumental stone set up to signify the great help that God granted the one raising the stone.

In Robinson’s poem, it figuratively meant that the writer—and all who subsequently sing the song—acknowledge God’s bountiful blessings and help in their lives” (Butt, “Here I Raise. . .”).

He had not gone far, when coming on towards him he beheld the portly gentleman, who had walked into his counting-house the day before, and said, "Scrooge and Marley's, I believe?" It sent a pang across his heart to think how this old gentleman would look upon him when they met; but he knew what path lay straight before him, and he took it.

"My dear sir," said Scrooge, quickening his pace, and taking the old gentleman by both his hands. "How do you do? I hope you succeeded yesterday. It was very kind of you. A merry Christmas to you, sir!"

"Lord bless me!" cried the gentleman, as if his breath were taken away. "My dear Mr. Scrooge, are you serious?"

"If you please," said Scrooge. "Not a farthing less. A great many back-payments are included in it, I assure you. Will you do me that favour?"
