The Cholmondeley Family have lived at Cholmondeley in Cheshire since 1200. The present Castle was built in the early 19th century by the 1st Marquess of Cholmondeley, and has been home to successive generations. Lavinia Dowager Marchioness, wife of the 6th Marquess, lived at Cholmondeley Castle until her death in November 2015. Her son David, the 7th Marquess, and his family live at Houghton Hall in Norfolk and divide their time between Norfolk and Cheshire. The Dowager spent the greater part of her life creating these magnificent gardens, a legacy which continues today. Whatever the season there are always plants and shrubs in flower from early bulbs through different types of Magnolia, Camellia, Azalea and Rhododendron, a very fine Davidia involucrata in the Glade and varieties of Cornus and specimen trees. Visitors enter by the Deer Park Mere, home to many different waterfowl and freshwater fish. Those who take advantage of the picnic site and children’s play area can walk around the lake and enjoy splendid views of the Castle, which stands dramatically on the hill. Our Tea Room is situated in the very heart of the gardens, serving a range of specialist teas, homemade cakes, light lunches, Snugbury’s ice-cream and milk shakes, all freshly prepared to order. Last orders 4.45pm. St. Nicholas Family Chapel is situated in the Park accessed either by car or on foot and is well worth a visit to admire its stained glass altar window, ornate panelling and peaceful atmosphere. Children will enjoy the open spaces, hidden paths, play areas and the Adventure Den located near the Tea Room. Cholmondeley Castle Farm Shop is situated near the Castle Gardens exit and offers superb locally produced food and everyday essentials. The Cholmondeley Family The Cholmondeley Family A path leads from the recently replanted Rose Garden, with over 350 roses and a new 100m long double herbaceous border, through a sandstone Gatehouse into the Temple Garden. With its small lake and two islands the garden is enclosed by fine specimen trees and many varieties of shrubs which change dramatically with the seasons. The Folly Garden has recently been extended, with new woodland borders. A feature of the garden is the Gothic “ruin”, constructed out of local red sandstone. The Cholmondeley Arms is a beautiful country Pub adjacent to Cholmondeley Park serving freshly prepared food all day every day, locally sourced cask ales on tap and nearly 200 different gins. Accommodation available. Visit www.cholmondeleyarms.co.uk or tel. 01829 720300. The magnificent and ornate white screen gates designed by Bakewell are a striking feature of the gardens The tranquil Lily pond situated below the Castle allows access to the Silver Garden and Castle Terrace with magnificent views across the Parkland area. Tower Hill offers the opportunity for woodland rambles amongst specimen shrubs and trees. In May the hill is a sea of bluebells. 2018 LEAFLET:Layout 1 05/03/2018 12:22 Page 1
