Why we receive the ashes Following the example of the Nine vites, who did penance in sackcloth and ashes, our foreheads are marked with ashes to humble our hearts and reminds us that life passes away on Earth. We remember this when we are told "Remember, Man is dust, and unto dust you shall return." Ashes are a symbol of penance made sacramental by the blessing of the Church, and they help us develop a spirit of humil- ity and sacrifice. The distribution of ashes comes from a ceremony of ages past. Christians who had committed grave faults performed public penance. On Ash Wednesday, the Bishop blessed the hair shirts which they were to wear during the forty days of penance, and sprinkled over them ashes made from the palms from the previous year. Then, while the faithful recited the Seven Peni- tential Psalms, the penitents were turned out of the church because of their sins -- just as Adam, the first man, was turned out of Paradise because of his disobedience. The penitents did not enter the church again until Maundy Thursday after hav- ing won reconciliation by the toil of forty days' penance and sacramental absolution. Later, all Christians, whether public or secret penitents, came to receive ashes out of devotion. In earlier times, the distribution of ashes was followed by a peniten- tial procession. The Ashes The ashes are made from the blessed palms used in the Palm Sunday celebration of the previous year. The ashes are chris- tened with Holy Water and are scented by exposure to incense. While the ashes symbolize penance and contrition, they are also a reminder that God is gracious and merciful to those who call on Him with repentant hearts. His Divine mercy is of ut- most importance during the season of Lent, and the Church calls on us to seek that mercy during the entire Lenten season with reflection, prayer and penance. MARCH 2014

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the Season of Lent. It is a season of penance, reflection, and fasting which prepares us for Christ's Resurrection on Easter Sunday, through which we attain redemption. Why we receive the ashes Following the example of the Nine vites, who did penance in sackcloth and ashes, our foreheads are marked with ashes to humble our hearts and reminds us that life passes away on Earth. We remember this when we are told "Remember, Man is dust, and unto dust you shall return." Ashes are a symbol of penance made sacramental by the blessing of the Church, and they help us develop a spirit of humil-ity and sacrifice. Then, while the faithful recited the Seven Peni-tential Psalms, the penitents were turned out of the church because of their sins -- just as Adam, the first man, was turned out of Paradise because of his disobedience. The penitents did not enter the church again until Maundy Thursday after hav-ing won reconciliation by the toil of forty days' penance and sacramental absolution. Take this list with you to the grocery store to guide you in your choices. In Janu-ary, 2014 St. John’s contributed 6 boxes of groceries and $645 in cash. As with all food pantries the demand is higher in the colder months, making our contributions more important than ever.

On Wednesday, March 26th at 3:45pm (sharp!) St. John’s volunteers will meet at St. Luke to distribute grocery boxes. If you are available to volunteer on this Wednesday, please sign-

up at the Spiritual Opportunities table.

St. John’s World Day of Prayer Vigil March 7, 2014 7am until 7pm

What is the World Day of Prayer? World Day of Prayer takes place internationally on the first Friday of March every year. In 2014 that will be March 7. The World Day of Prayer is a worldwide movement of Christian women of many traditions who come together to observe a common day of prayer each year, and who, in many countries, have a continuing relationship in prayer and service. The host country for WDP 2014 is Egypt, and the title of this year’s theme is “Streams in the Desert.” What is prayer? What exactly is prayer? According to the dictionary, it is “a spiritual communion with God or an object of worship, as in supplication, thanksgiving, adoration, or confession OR a formula or sequence of words used in or appointed for pray-ing: the Lord's Prayer.” I believe prayer to be less formal than this; to be a conversation with my God. Because of my faith and God’s Love for me, I know I can ask Him anything and He will patiently listen. I know He always answers my prayers, even when sometimes the answer is “No.” What is a prayer vigil? Just what is a prayer vigil? The idea is many centuries old. According to the dictionary again, "Vigil" indicates “a time of vigilance, wakefulness, a watch, originally kept on the night before a religious feast with prayer or other devotions." Remember the verse in 2 Thessalonians 5:17 “Pray without ceasing”? That’s what a prayer vigil accomplishes for us. We have chosen the next 24 hours to do just that, Pray without ceasing. Why are we doing this? We are doing this to support the World Day of Prayer. We pray for many reasons, but two favorites mentioned in the bible are: Matthew 18:19-20 "Also, I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about something and pray for it, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven. This is true because if two or three people come together in my name, I am there with them." Matthew 21:22 “Whatever you ask for in prayer with faith, you will receive.” We have so many needs and concerns we daily use as our prayer topics. But we have only listed 24 separate topics on which to focus during these next 12 hours. Each half hour has a topic, a verse or two to reflect on that topic and a short prayer to pray. So, let’s begin our time to “pray without ceasing” and invite Our Lord to join us.
