CRS STLP Trip to Morehead

On November 30, 2011, at 9 am the 6th grade STLP went to Morehead to watch the OWAP ThinkQuest team showcase their project. While we were there we asked OWAP team member, Ema-Leigh Forbes why the OWAP team was showcasing their project, and she said, “Since our team won the Thinkquest competition, we decided to showcase our project.” Next we asked William Zheng, another ThinkQuest member, “How did we get to Morehead?” and William replied, “All of Charles Russell 6th grade STLP took a bus to Morehead about at 8 am and arrived at Morehead about 9:45 am.” OWAP ended up being one of the teams that qualified for state with a score of 117 out of 118. -Leah Smith-Mensah & Zachary Stafford

Tailgate with the Tomcats

Charles Russell 6th grade STLP went to Morehead State University. While we were there we interviewed Oakview Elementary with their Tailgate with the Tomcats presentation. They explained a few years ago that their fellow students at Oakveiw decided to raise money for Breast Cancer so each year they continue the tradition. They helped raise money by having races and selling suckers, and all of the profit went to Breast Cancer Research. -Alannah Molenda & Blaine Collins

Hager Energy Challenge

On November 30, 2011, at Morehead State University, the fellow students from Hager Elementary were promoting the use of less electricity. Their project is called “The Hager Energy Challenge.” The Hager students decided to accept this challenge at home. They made sure that they took shorter showers, turned off lights when they weren’t being used, and hand washed their dishes once a week to save energy. The Hager students believe that their project will catch on and more people will conserve energy. -Carrina Hensley & Jessica McLeod

Trout is A-lureing

On November 30, 2011 we visited the Poage Elementary showcase project at Morehead State University. The name of their project is ”Trout is A-lureing”. This project is to help increase the population of Rainbow Trout. We learned about the trout’s eggs, habitat, and how we can help increase the population of Rainbow Trout. They told us what Rainbow Trout looked like and to remember if we ever go fishing and catch a rainbow trout to put it back in the water so the trout can continue to repopulate. -Sarah Rymer, Julia Conley, & Alex Banfield

Internet Safety

“We’re on Safety Patrol,” this is Oakview’s showcase name. They were talking about how kids should stay safe on the Internet. This showcase took place on November 30 at Morehead State University. The project is to help protect kids from harm on the Internet and to teach at a young age what is right and wrong to do on the Internet. It’s a project that benefits everyone who uses the Internet. –Chase Goodrich & Jakob Williams

Pause for Paws

On November 30, 2011, the Charles Russell STLP went to Morehead State University. While we were there we interviewed students from Hager Elementary about their project, “A Cause for Paws.” They wanted to raise money for abused animals in our community. They did so by painting ornaments with their project colors blue and white and putting a paw print in the middle. After painting them they sold them to their fellow students as a fundraiser. They also told us that all of the proceeds go to AARF. Sarah Ratliff & Hattie Killin

Gary Booth Magic Show

On December 6th, our school had Mr. Gary Booth do a magic performance. He set us two goals of staying drug free. Some student volunteers did a special song using bells and played Happy Birthday to Ta’Nicka Tackett. He did some card tricks for us and picked many volunteers for the different tricks. At the end of his show, he gave out balloon figurines that he made. The kids loved the tricks and the show was all good! -Alex Banfield & Bentley

6th Grade Christmas Play

The 6th Grade Christmas play was about six kids that went to the North Pole and found the true meaning of Christmas. They sang “Welcome to the North Pole,” and Rudolf, Zach Stafford said, “That’s just not fast enough.” Then the reindeer sang, “We Are the Reindeer” followed by the elves who sang, “I’m Tired.” Next the toys came out and sang, “We Are the Toys.” The odd and strange snowmen sang, “I Want to Go to Hawaii.” After that when Santa, Tyler Williams, left with the reindeer, Mrs. Claus, Sarah Ratliff, and everyone else sang “One Day a Year.” The six kids learned about everyone at the North Pole and all about Christmas as did everyone else. –Jake Damron

Cochlear Implant

On December 14, 2011, a lady named Stephanie Disney came to Charles Russell and talked to the 5th grade classes about the different parts of the ear and cochlear implants. Mrs. Disney is an audiologist. Since the 5th grade classes were learning about hearing, Mrs. McDavid thought it was a great idea to have Mrs. Disney come in. Every now and then, Mrs. Disney would ask questions to see if anyone had paid attention and gave out a piece of candy to anyone who got it right. Mrs. Disney asked if anyone knew where to put the inner ear at on the ear model she brought with her. She also showed us what a hearing aid looks like and how it works. She also joked and said, “You guys are lucky I’m not a dentist, because a dentist would never give you candy.” -Shalayna Rice

DW from Arthur’s

On December 7, 2011, DW came to Charles Russell. She came to talk about DW and Arthur. She talked about the newest book and read it to the children. DW told the kids that 36 years ago the first Arthur book was made. DW’s favorite color is green. She said the author who wrote the book was Marc Brown. He lives in New York. Marc Brown loved to draw. There have been 30 rewrites times 15 years of Arthur. In 1997 Arthur was in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade for the 1st time. –Miranda Martin & Olivia Allen

6th Grade Magazines

On December 14th, the sixth graders presented their magazine article for Mrs. Minton’s social studies class. We had to pick a topic from out social studies textbook and we earned extra credit for our article. This was from the chapter we read in October about Central and South America. There was a lot of stuff we didn’t know. So doing the articles helped us learn a lot about Central and South America. With our articles we created an advertisement during art class. We are designrf a cover for our magazine. It was so fun doing it! –Carrina Hensley

Polar Express Day

On Friday, December 16, 2011, in Mrs. Bocook’s 1st grade class, our Superintendent, Mr. Gilmore read The Polar Express. Mr. Gilmore was reading from a rocking chair by an animated fire displayed on the SmartBoard. This is a very interesting and one of the most read books for Christmas. The rest of the classes celebrated Polar Express Day, too, by doing a variety of activities including guest readers, play acting the story, watching the movie, and drinking hot chocolate. The kids were laughing and having a great time! -Sarah

All about Russia

Mrs. Oksana Kinner visited the sixth grade classrooms on January 18th, 2012. She came to teach us about the culture and traditions of Russia. Some of the things she told us about were: Russia is the largest country in the world; the Volga River is the largest river in Europe; and it is also the oldest, deepest, and clearest in the world. She taught us that Russian girls wear pretty dresses with floral patterns and ruffles. She brought some dresses for the girls to have a style show. She told us that New Year’s is the most celebrated holiday in Russia. She taught us how to make Russian ice cream. You take crushed up ice and put in any flavor you want of juice to make the ice cream. She knows really amazing things about Russia. She is very smart and should tell more people what she knows. We learned a lot of really cool things from Mrs. Kinner. –Baylei Park

4th Grade Volcanoes

Miss Hood’s 4th grade class was making volcano experiments on January 23rd in the morning. We were doing it to study the making of one type of rock, igneous. We made it with dish soap, food dye, two liter bottle tops, baking soda, and vinegar. We got to pick our favorite color for our volcano. Grant Kelley’s volcano touched the ceiling when it exploded and stained it. Miss Hood said that she would give the person with the highest volcano 50 extra bonus points. Grant’s twin sister, Paige, had her volcano touch the ceiling, too, but his was the highest so he got the points. It was so awesome! Each student got to make the whole volcano and it was a lot of run. –Paige

Lilly Plants a Garden

On February 7, 2012, The Little Company from Morehead State University put on a play called “Lilly Plants a Garden” in CRS gym. They did this to entertain the school and help students learn about drama. They put up props and wore costumes. There was a little girl named Lilly whose parents were a different kind of creature than she was. Lilly had soft skin, a small nose, red hair, no floppy years. The father was so upset about how different Lilly was that he drank so much he floated away like a balloon. Lilly planted a seed in a garden and because of her tears it grew. Lilly and her Mom were forced to live in a land of trouble because Lilly’s kind of creatures and her Mom’s kind of creatures would not accept them. Lilly became separated from her Mom for a while so she befriended a lady bug without a wing. Lilly helped the lady bug figure out a way to fly. It was a very interesting play with sound effects that were loud BOOMS made by the players. Lilly eventually found her parents again and everyone lived happily ever after. The MSU players introduced themselves at the end. The kids had a wonderful time watching the play. –Makenzie Lucas

100th Day Activities

On February 1st, 2012, the CRS primary kids did 100th day of school activities. Some things that they made were 100-fruit loop necklaces, hats, and posters. They completed 100 day worksheets. Mrs. Minton’s class helped the younger kids make the fruit loop necklaces; they had a lot of fun. Mrs. King’s class did math by grouping things in 100s. Mrs. Bonner’s class took 100 steps and Mrs. Geyer’s class had 100 visitors. Some classes had the kids bring in 100 things. One kid brought in 100 small balloons on a poster. The kids did all sorts of things on the 100th day of school and you just learned about it. –Abby Crites

European Festivals

The 6th grade had a European Festival. There were eight different festivals that were showcased. They were all very good, but we had a contest to see who was the best. The 6th grade students were divided into eight teams. Each team had to choose a European Festival to research and create a display. Each festival had to have five facts, a schedule of activities, food or music, a flag, and table presentation with a tri-fold poster board. The festivals we had were: The Prague Spring International Music Festival, Running of the Bulls, Cannes Film Festival, Festival of Lights, Festival of Roses, Maselenitsia, and Festa Italiana and at the end, though, Oktoberfest by Leah Smith-Mensah, Ema-Leigh Forbes, Alex Banfield, Tierra Wolfe, and Katie Mullins won. Everyone had fun and a lot of groups had ethnic food; I liked the zucchini fries. –Abby Crites

Read Your Heart Out

Who read 4,483 books in one month?? Charles Russell students…that’s who! Mrs. Kristy Minton, 6th grade teacher, challenged the students at Charles Russell to read as many books as they could from January 12-February 13. Of course, they had to take an AR test on each book and score at least 80%. The students took her seriously as you can see. She promised prizes to the top winners. Noah Carey in 2nd grade won a Kindle by reading 122 books (the most in 2nd-6th grades) and Logan Allison in 1st grade won a Leap Pad by reading 156 books (the most in K-1st grades.) Mrs. Bonner’s class won the grand prize which was a pizza party because they read a whopping 753 books. Way to go kindergarten! We all met together as a school for Literacy Night which was on February 16th at 6 pm. Many teachers and students were very festively dressed as characters from their favorite books while the students and parents were engaged in learning more about reading while having fun! Angie Conley from the Boyd County Public Library even shared resources with the parents who attended. We finished the evening by having snacks in the gym while watching the 6th grade students make a book come to life. Everyone at Charles Russell had a great time reading their hearts out. –Preston

Tobacco Free Academy The Ashland-Boyd County Health Department hosted the Tobacco Free Academy at CRS gym on February 21. They did it to prevent kids in elementary schools from using tobacco and other drugs. The 4th and 6th grades attended the academy. They showed the kids a non-smoker’s lung and a smoker’s lung so they could see how they function. They also talked to the kids about poisons, x-rays, pills, spray paint, alcohol and all kinds of tobacco. Spray paints are inhalants. If you take too many pills then it’s called an overdose. Crystal Meth is the most used addicting drug in the United States. Any drug can kill you if you use it too much or the wrong way. It was a good thing that everybody should go to. –Kyle Webster

The Marvelous Machine

On February 28, 2012, the Paramount Players put on a play called The Marvelous Machine about how the human body functions. The Players taught us all about the lungs, heart, brain, and others. We also learned about the food pyramid and what foods are good for our body and what are not. This play took place in the CRS gym and went from 1 to 1:45 pm. Their play was a success because the students at Charles Russell Elementary learned so much about the human body. –Leah Smith-Mensah

Leap Year

On February 29 in Mrs. King’s 2nd grade class Bethany and Preston Ledford’s grandma talked about Leap Year. As she says the chances of being born on Feb. 29th is 1 in 1461. While she talked about Leap Year the students made a craft and enjoyed a snack and she read the students a story. I think the students enjoyed it. -Cameron Marushi
