MEMBERS IN THE SPOTLIGHTThe Chamber News helps you get to know fellow members by profiling two organizations in each issue.

MICHIGAN DEALSMichigan Deals is a new website dedicated to providing busi-nesses with an easy, affordable solution to marketing and con-necting with consumers. Designed to showcase local Michigan businesses, it delivers an easy-to-use online platform for busi-nesses to promote, advertise and network with current and

potential customers. Businesses can upload pictures, coupons, vid-eo, special offers, an-nouncements, event in-formation and more.

The site also features a “Spend to Give” section that allows con-sumers to donate a portion of every purchase to a desired local charity. Additionally, Michigan Deals delivers a social dynamic for users to rate and review their experiences with local busi-nesses and create their own virtual coupon book based on likes and interests.

Dan DeKorne, President of Michigan Deals, finds great value in the Chamber’s member connection offerings. “The Chamber helps create a healthy business environment and is dedicated to working with their members and helping connect them. I specifically enjoy taking advantage of their Business Exchange Luncheons,” says DeKorne.

METAL ART STUDIO FINE JEWELRYMetal Art Studio Fine Jewelry describes itself as a store where you will find designer jewelry you’ve never seen before, and also a studio where you can have a piece perfectly designed and custom made just for you.

Established in 1990 and located on Monroe Avenue in downtown Grand Rapids, they specialize in one of a kind, creative jewelry in all the precious metals, along with diamonds, gemstones, and pearls. They also have in-house jewelers to recondition, repair, or rebuild your favorite pieces and heirlooms.

At Metal Art Studio, there’s always something interesting be-ing designed, and they welcome you to stop by to see the latest artwork in progress.

Carol Wagen, CEO and co-owner of Metal Art Studio Fine Jewelry, uses her Chamber membership to connect with other members. “What I value most about being a Chamber member is my CEO Roundtable. I look forward to our month-ly meetings because they expose me to business issues out-side of my industry,” says Wagen. “When I host, I appreciate hearing ideas and suggestions from varying perspectives. It reminds me how diverse the clients are who come into my store.”

local” and “buy Michigan” campaigns. People understand that when they spend money with local, small businesses they’re taking a direct action to support the local economy and local jobs.

When given a choice, I think most people - and most businesses - would choose to buy from a local, small business if all other factors are equal. The main challenge consumers and business to business customers face is finding the right small business to meet their needs.

This year, the Chamber is developing new ways to put our expertise to work to help businesses make the right connections with potential suppliers in our community. We encourage you to do business with your fellow Chamber members. Visit our website at www.grandrapids.org for an online directory to get started on making your right connections.

Rick Baker, President & CEO of the Grand Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce

Second stage growth is critical for entrepreneurs because they face an entirely new set of challenges. What made a company successful in their first stage probably won’t make them successful in second stage. On the plus side, second-stagers have a proven product or service under their belts and have attracted initial customers, so sur-vival is no longer a daily concern. Yet second-stagers now face more strategic issues as they strive to gain a stronger foothold in the market and win more customers.

There are different questions you will need to ask yourself in regards to your business as you grow versus when you first started out. Instead of ask-ing yourself “can we make it?” you may start thinking, “how can we grow our company affordably?” Marketing chan-nels that generated initial growth may not be adequate to use for the next level. As the business is more recognized you may want to shift to enhanced advertis-ing and social media campaigns to gain increased visibility with potential cus-tomers.

Market dynamics is another challenge that can require second-stagers to tweak business models and restructure their organizations. As industries shift and the economy changes, businesses need to adapt to the changes in order to survive and grow. That could mean transitioning

your workforce either by expanding it or down-sizing. It might mean having to add new servic-es or divisions to meet the needs of your clients.

Personnel issues typically loom large in second stage. On one hand, companies have more cred-ibility and financial wherewithal, so it’s easier to attract employees. Yet finding people who pos-sess specific expertise — and fit into the com-pany’s culture — can be difficult. In addition, as staff expands, entrepreneurs need to bring on senior managers who can implement formal processes and procedures.

“While many entrepreneurs are born marketers and naturals at business development, manage-ment skills aren’t always part of their DNA,” says Dino Signore, Manager of Program Develop-ment at the Edward Lowe Foundation.

Managing growth is also critical dur-ing second stage. For example, if a software company suddenly brought on 10,000 software users, they would need staff to support the new custom-ers. And that would prompt a number of questions: How many support peo-ple do you need? Where do you find them? Should they be in-house or out-sourced?

Managing growth also means saying “no” to some deals that don’t make sense from a financial standpoint — even with long-time customers. Ini-tial clients can continue to see you as a start-up business — despite your growth and increased visibility in the market so it’s important to manage cli-ents’ expectations. You can give loyal customers a deal, but you can’t give them a deal that’s going to cost you. They need to be reminded that you’re a business and need to maintain your profit margins.

Taking your business from stage one to stage two is a huge step for entrepre-neurs, but with the right resources and tools, your business can see significant growth and create a win for you, your employees and the economy.

Milton Roye, President/CEO of ENERG Power Systems LLC, found the Chamber was exactly what he needed to take his company to the next level. “I started the company on the east side of the state and although the support was good, they just weren’t able to help me with my cus-tomers. I moved over here, became a member of the Chamber and they were able provide me with the in person introductions to the key people I needed to talk with,” said Roye. “I tell people all over the coun-try that being in Grand Rapids is going to be the key in growing our business substantially in the next five years.”

Another offering that is beneficial to members is the CEO and Management Roundtables, which connect executives to help generate company success. This is a unique, long-term opportunity for business leaders and management to meet with peers once a month to discuss opportunities or challenges within their companies, and to receive advice from those peers on the best course of ac-tion—think “Informal Board of Directors.” All discussion is completely confidential and each member of the roundtable has the opportunity to host a session, allowing the group to focus entirely on offering suggestions and solutions to you. Members from different-sized companies and different industries share their business experience and insight to benefit others.

Some CEO Roundtables continue on through the years together, based on the success they offer attendees. “My business has been transformed through my CEO Roundtable participation. I attribute much of Gymco’s business success to the skills, strategies, chal-lenges, and insights I have gained from my Roundtable colleagues throughout the past ten years,” says Doreen Bolhuis, President of Gymco, Inc.

For more information on our business growth services, CEO or Management Roundtables, or other business development offer-ings, please contact Janet Wyllie at 616.771.0331 or [email protected].

The Collective Impact of Sustainability By Norman Christopher, Executive Director, Sustainable Community Development Initiative at Grand Valley State University

THE SUSTAINABILITY SPOTLIGHT

West Michigan has been on a sustainability journey for quite some time. During that timeframe, sustainable development has gone through several phases. The first phase dealt with an assessment of sustainability. The types of indicators and metrics used provided an understanding of where businesses and organizations were on their sustainability journey. In essence the metrics answered the question of where are we today? Another phase dealt with sustainability progress. Sustainability metrics and in-dicators used were performance measurements that enabled companies and organizations to track their progress versus strate-gic and tactical sustainability goals. These metrics help answer the question of are we on the right track, and are we making any headway? Now, a third and more important sustainability area is being addressed. This opportunity deals with the collective im-pact of our sustainable development efforts and initiatives. In order for change to take place, we will all need to collaborate and partner across our typical boundaries to help lead and initiate these efforts. Groups that have been successful have the following:

• Common Agenda, including a shared vision for change.• Shared Measurement Systems to report and measure progress.• Mutually Reinforcing Activities that allow stakeholders with different perspectives to support common goals.• Continuous Communications including conversations and dialogue to build trust and understanding.• Backbone Support Organization including a separate or defined organization to support the collective effort and serve as the

focal point or conduit.

The West Michigan Chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council (www.usgbcwm.org) is a backbone organization that has advocated and supported the implementation of Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) building, and construction in the West Michigan community. The design and construction of LEED buildings can now be seen across the public, private, municipal, academic, and service sectors. The West Michigan chapter of the USGBC provides a monthly newsletter, as well as communicates trends and change forces in the overall construction industry. So what has been the collective impact of LEED building projects in West Michigan?

To begin, West Michigan has 159 certified LEED building projects, compared to a total of 265 LEED certified building projects in all of Michigan or roughly 60 percent. The 159 LEED certified building projects total approximately 27 million square feet and contain:

• 76 LEED Certified building

• 40 LEED Silver buildings

• 30 LEED Gold buildings

• 3 LEED Platinum buildings

The collective impact of LEED building projects in West Michigan includes the following:• $3.88 billion dollars of capital investment• Annual energy savings of $14MM• Annual operation and maintenance savings of $8.6MM• Annual waste savings of $539K• Annual water savings of $1.35 MM• Employed approximately 28,000 in the design, site prepara-

tion, construction, and maintenance of the building projects

Overall, as can be seen, LEED building projects in West Michigan have been a great success story and have generated annual savings of close to $25MM. Moving forward many companies, municipali-ties and institutions have now established LEED building policies and procedures for all new and existing building construction.
