Firstly I d like to welcome the new Committee Members who are all looking forward to serving the business community, we are committed to you, our members. Of course, there is always room for improvement and through your feedback, we ll continue to strive to deliver even more.

It is with great pleasure I m able to serve both the committee and our members, working with other key organisations, Local and State Government on building

A Better Climate For Business in the Bundaberg region.

I like a quote from Jim Rohn If you go to work on your goals, your goals will go to work on you. If you go to work on your plan, your plan will go to work on you. Whatever good things we build end up

building us,” and I m a firm believer that together we can continue to work on our goals and plans for the continued economic growth of our region.

The Strategic Plan for Chamber is well under way, which will take us through to 2017, ensuring a much more robust Chamber representing the business community, aligning with our goals of providing a better service for the members and paving a way for your business success!

I d also like to thank you for your outstanding support of the Customer Service Award nominations. Seems

everyday, we re receiving recommendations for outstanding customer service. The comments are quite inspiring and those businesses should be extremely proud of their teams.

If you require any more booklets for your counters, please send an email request to [email protected].

You may have seen and heard the Business Excellence Awards are now open, please nominate your favourite business (could be yours). This is a great opportunity for you to showcase your business in front of your peers.

If you haven't liked us on Facebook, please do as there are plenty of inspirational quotes, plus you will be kept up to date with what Chamber is up to and how your business may benefit!

Personally I d like to see more members sending through events, special offers and great success stories we can post for others to attend, gain ideas and support. If you do have an upcoming event, make sure you let us know so it can be promoted via the website and Facebook.

Chamber’s goal is to ensure your message

reaches as many potential customers and clients as possible.

Our continued engagement with CCIQ (Chamber Of Commerce And Industry Queensland) will ensure more resources will be made available to members moving forward.

We re also excited to announce the Bundy Pride Brand is continuing to grow and looking to be a fantastic marketing arm for business and industry for this region. If you d like to know more, please pop over to www.bundypride.com.au.

Lastly, I d like to thank you, our members, who make all of this possible. Standing alone, a business has limited opportunity, but as a collective group, focussed on building better businesses and a stronger community, the opportunities are limitless.

Let s finish 2014 with positive and profitable trade, wishing you every success! Remember, the best days in your business are still to come! Cheers

Yale Morgan

W elcome to the latest edition of the Chamber Chat.

This edition we have kept up our focus on highlighting Bundaberg business success stories, regardless of the size of the business and this edition we have two great stories. It always amazes me just how diverse our business community is and the wide range of successful, quiet achievers we have in this great region. After the last 18 months, it is great to see the businesses of Chamber members continuing to recover, grow and prosper. Included in this edition is a list of current Chamber of Commerce members, a list that we are proud to announce has continued to grow year on year, a sign of a very healthy Chamber. If you would like to be involved, contact the Chamber Secretary for more information.

Apologies to the Business Enterprise Centre

In the last edition of the Chamber Chat we published a story that had been written by the Australian Small Business Commissioner titled Dealing with Disputes. This article incorrectly attributed the credit for the Bundaberg Business Expo to the Chamber of Commerce, when in fact sole credit should have been given to the Business Enterprise Centre. The Chamber Chat team apologies for the publishing of this incorrect information and applaud the great work done by the team at the Business Enterprise Centre.

Well, if you do you could very well be dabbling in the marketing of our region!

Thank you from Bundaberg and North Burnett Tourism!

You, your family and your clients can help us do that by capturing the extraordinary moments of your everyday! It’s all about showcasing our visitor experiences; whether it be taking photographs of our fresh local produce at Alloway Farm Markets, or plated up at Indulge, building sandcastles at Elliot Heads, a sunrise over the canefields, enjoying a drink at Kacey’s, catching a fish at Woodgate, your happy kids playing in the park at Lake Ellen or feeding the ducks at the Botanic Gardens, snap up the moment with your smartphone and share with us by using #visitbundaberg to get our attention. Awesome images using #visitbundaberg will be shared on our hashtag feed on www.bundabergregion.org and regularly featured on our Instagram or Facebook channel at @visitbundaberg. You can also use #southerngreatbarrierreef and #thisisqueensland. For food and produce related

images, use #tastebundaberg #bundabergproduce and to get the attention of Tourism Australia and their awesome Restaurant Australia campaign, use #restaurantaustralia. Or create your own, #thepossibilitiesareendless Now if you’re a social media novice, hashtags, those words preceded by the #sign, may seem confusing and unnecessary. But they are an integral tool in communicating online, and it’s important to know which ones to use to market our destination! Essentially the # turns any word or group of words that directly follow it into a searchable link. This allows you to organise content (and track discussion topics on twitter) based on those keywords. So, if you were wanting to share a photo of a fresh punnet of strawberries for eg, you would include #tastebundaberg and probably #strawberries.

I f you didn’t already know, Instagram is THE social network

for sharing images and video from your smartphone. It’s a way to capture and share images and short video while you’re in the moment. You can take images directly within Instagram or use existing images and video content on your phone. You can add some filters to make your content prettier and then publish. The Instagram community continues to grow exponentially. The 200 million Instragrammers (users of Instagram) add over 60 million photos each day which are then liked over 1.6 billion times per day. That’s a lot of double-tapping! What we as your regional tourism organization LOVE about Instagram and other social channels, is, it’s a place where we can inspire future travellers to come to explore Bundaberg. Instagram is a fantastic platform for promoting our destination, allowing participants to share authentic, compelling images in real time.

Tourism & Events Queensland recently held the Queensland Instameet on Saturday 4th October. The collective effort attracted over 90 instameets across Queensland, with a massive1085 Instagrammers registered and more than 6000 gorgeous images captured around the state tagged with #thisisqueensland. We are lucky to already have a very active Instagram community around the Bundaberg North Burnett and BNBT often brings IGers (Instagrammers) together by holding an ‘Instameet’ in different locations each quarter. An Instameet draws people together to connect, share tips, explore and collectively promote our tourism assets to the world. Keep an eye on the Bundaberg North Burnett Tourism official destination marketing Instagram account @visitbundaberg for Instameet alerts – we would love for you to join us!

I hope you took part in the great Small Business Week activities

early last month.

Did you know that in 2013, over 4,500 people attended more than 90 events across Queensland?

The typical attendee at a Small Business Week event was a small business owner and manager, in business for ten years or more, and who wanted to network and learn.

If you missed out on either hosting or attending an event in 2014, don’t let the opportunity slip by next year.

It was great to see so many of our Chamber of Commerce members at the lunch with the Premier in August. I know many who attended were encouraged by the Premier’s commitment to the Queensland Government’s strong plan for the state’s small businesses.

We want to deliver a brighter future for all businesses, plus the mums, dads and families who operate them.

We’ve delivered on our promises to small business to lower costs through payroll tax exemption increases; and reducing premiums by 17% means we have the lowest Workers’ Compensation costs in Australia. Cutting green tape to more than 9000 businesses in low-risk environmental activities saves administrative costs of $600 per business.

I was thrilled to announce the new management plan and visitor permits for Lady Musgrave Island recently. Many of you are involved in tourism directly, and many more will benefit from more tourist visits to Bundaberg.

I’m confident we’ll see a professional tour operator out of Bundaberg in the near future – something I’ve been fighting for for years.

Bundaberg cooking with gas

Business opportunities and jobs will flow to Bundaberg with our $11 million investment in a new gas pipeline to supply householders and industry. I’ve fought hard to get the funds for the Gas Pipeline.

It will create around 100 full-time jobs and 600 indirect jobs by attracting new industry and development to the region.

We’ll provide a reliable and essential energy supply for industrial parks

and residential developments along its route and boost local business confidence.

Mon Repos Master Plan

Thanks to everyone who gave input to plans for revitalising Mon Repos Turtle Centre.

We recently unveiled the exciting new Master Plan for Mon Repos to become a world class leader in marine conservation, and an exciting gateway to the Burnett.

$450,000 will go to upgrading visitor facilities and activities. 30,000 visitors already come each year to see the largest concentration of nesting loggerheads on the east coast of Australia.

I expect families and tourists to flock to Mon Repos in unprecedented numbers all year-round, giving a great boost to the local economy and businesses.

In 1999, Phil Ainsworth and Rod Stiff, the founders of Jabiru, moved into producing the avionics to go into the Jabiru and other light aircraft. The Avionics were manufactured alongside Jabiru at the Bundaberg Airport, under the banner of Microair Avionics.

Initiaially Microair began making a small VHF Comm (M720) suited to gliders, ultralights and experimental aircraft. This product's success was based on its small size and its great value for money. The combination of small size and low price was very successful and Microair continued to grow. Through determination, hardwork and sheer tenacity, Microair became the only CASA (Civil Aviation Safety Authority) approved Avionics manufacturing facility in Australia.

In 2005 Phil Ainsworth sold his interests in Jabiru and assumed full ownership of Microair Avionics Pty Ltd. Microair has grown to be Australia’s leading avionics manufacturer, producing a range of aircraft transceivers (the voice communication),

transponders (the radar communication), altitude encoders (measures barometric altitude) & Aircraft GPS Tracking equipment - exporting to 30 countries worldwide.

An innovative company, Microair looked for alternative areas to utilise its skilled team during the Global Financial Crises which had a great impact on manufacturers who exported, in particular to the USA . So stepping sideways, Microair began to specialise in the manufacture and sale of solar powered Street Lights, Vehicle Activated Signage and Flood Monitoring Systems. The Flood Monitoring System concept was born during the 2010/2011 Bundaberg Floods. The brief was to monitor rising water; transmit information with a photo via telemetry to a secured website; predict the rise and fall of water over the road; give advanced warning of potential flooding; notify the 131940 public website. The system was designed in house by the Microair R&D team and a number of sites were installed before the 2013 floods. Since then, the Department of Transport and Main Roads have commissioned more sites,

Microair Avionics is an exciting, technology based, Australian company developing, manufacturing and retailing sophisticated avionics products for domestic and worldwide markets, right here in Bundaberg.

some with LED advance warning signs, along the Bruce Highway and in the Widebay and Fitzroy regions. The systems are manufactured here in our Bundaberg facility and are suitable to be installed at mine sites, local roads and rivers or state highways - any site that floods, where people and vehicles need to be managed or public safety is of concern. A change of ownership from Phil Ainsworth to the Brisbane based Total Aviation Solutions (TAS) took place early in 2013 and later that same year, TAS also acquired USA company digEcor, based in Utah. digEcor is the global market leader in the provision of portable inflight entertainment (IFE) solutions available in many commercial airline flights around the world including Australia.

Using Microair’s manufacturing expertise, a new product, GLIDE, a seat back IFE system, has been undergoing development with the first batch of units being installed into Commercial aircraft in USA. Along with the core avionics products, part of the GLIDE system will be manufactured at Microair here in Bundaberg, with service and support for Asia Pacific region customers also to be based in Bundaberg.

A company on the move, Microair is part of the TAS Group with digEcor now supporting offices not only in Utah, but in Brisbane, Seattle, Singapore and London as well.

“It’s an exciting time, as we look forward to the Bundaberg manufactured IFE system being installed in aircraft around the world” said CEO David Withers.

“It’s been my privilege to have been part of this business for more than 11 years. A business that began as a boutique business 14 years ago. The addition of the new products being produced here in Bundaberg ensures the long term future for Microair, employment for local people which in turn boosts the local economy,” said Business Manager Jeanette Nock. As for the ongoing future of Microair - well the sky’s the limit for this Bundaberg success story.

systems OK, so what are the pitfalls of using the cloud? The biggest issue of using the cloud is the security of the system from outside access and the security of your data. There is also the potential loss of data through either hardware failure, software glitches or business failure Most importantly no internet connection means no access to your data. Subscription costs can be per entity which can make it costly if you have multiple entities. So some limitations, but there is a process of continuous improvements. Depending on your industry there are many other add-on programs that can integrate and complement your accounting system. You can find out more about the following applications to see how suitable they might be for your business:

T welve months ago Joe (not his real name) was losing money,

not billing out on time, having staff productivity issues and cashflow problems. Since moving his business to the cloud things have turned around dramatically! Would you like to save time and money in your business? Have you considered how moving your business to the cloud could help? So what is cloud computing? Cloud computing allows storage and accessing of files and data over the internet. It also allows the use of software applications over the internet instead of on your local hard drive or office server. Having a reliable internet connection is required before you even consider looking at the options for your business.

You may have used Hotmail, Gmail or Facebook and you may use internet banking. You actually access the information over the internet. This is the cloud! But why move to the cloud? Firstly, the benefits from a bookkeeping and accounting perspective: Automated daily bank feeds Fast, simple and customised

invoicing Anywhere, anytime (depends

on internet connection) Real-time collaboration with

We converted Joe’s business from a manual paper based system to a fully integrated Cloud business solution. We implemented Xero accounting software and the GeoOp Field Job Management application and as a result the business can now invoice as soon as the job is complete from a mini iPad.

This invoice is then linked to their Xero accounting software and when the money is received in the bank it will data match to that invoice. All jobs are logged into a system and now accounted for where as in the past they could have been missed. Each staff member has a mini iPad and have a log of jobs to complete in their day. Stock can be traced to see what is used on a job and what a job has cost.

The cashflow and efficiency in this business has improved out of sight! The business can now move on to improving in other areas or the owners can look at making other investment decisions for their future. If the paperwork in your business is getting out of hand there are solutions available. Look at your systems and processes today! See how this technology is the way of the future. Don’t get left behind!

play on their home turf? Because, traditionally they win more games, so sell on your home ground as often as possible.

8. Good Shake - Shake hands firmly and make eye contact. No one wants to shake hands with a “dead fish” or with a “knuckle cruncher.” Oh, and no "power handshakes" where you come over the top "proving your dominance" - one fast way to lose a potential sale and customer.

9. Converse - When presenting, make it more of a conversation, as though you were talking to a friend

10. Develop better phone skills. The phone is a very effective weapon in sales!

S elling - The highest paid and most satisfying profession in the

world, but sadly, if you don’t know what you’re doing, can also be the least paid and downright depressing! Often I see businesses that need a new team member to "sell" their products and services but give little training. Sure they will induct them into the systems, procedures, statutory regulations on OH&S, discrimination, sexual harassment etc - but training the team on selling?? Here's a tip - "Nothing Happens In Business Until An Item (Or Service) Is Sold.” No matter what the industry or profession, whether it be product, time or services, this statement is a fact! My belief is that the business owner’s time should be taken up in two areas; marketing and selling or, if you have a team, sales training.

Below are 10 basic tools to help you and your team. 1. Have confidence - first believe

in YOU! If you don't have faith in yourself, then how can anyone else?

2. PMA - Positive Mental Attitude, the key to any successful person in sales. If you don’t have one, best develop one then, importantly, maintain it. Much of the success in sales depends on this factor.

3. Goal setting and Goal getting. Develop a plan, write your goals down and speak them out loud at least twice a day

4. Education - Importantly, learn sales techniques, go to seminars, read books, learn from other more successful sales people - if you're an employee, plead with your boss to send you to a seminar or ask for a trainer to come in house.

5. Listen - You spend a fair amount of time in your car. Use it as a place to learn, listen to CDs, MP3s, podcasts etc. Whilst music may lift you up - it won’t help you develop the skills to earn more cash.

6. Visualise - One of my favourites is to visualise the sale taking place before you even meet with your prospect/client. This will boost your confidence and trigger your RAS (Reticular Activation System - sub conscious level of learning).

7. Home Ground Advantage - Why do sporting teams like to
