Halloween is a favorite holiday of kids all over the country, and Camp Ne-waygo knows how to make it fun at their annual Halloweekend festivities.

Halloweekend takes place October 24 from 5:00–7:00 p.m., and October 25 and 26 from 1:00–5:00 p.m. at beautiful Camp Newaygo, located at 5333 Centerline Rd., Newaygo. Activities include: festive decorated cabin tours, Halloween crafts, scarecrow making, homemade donuts, face and —of course—pumpkin painting, a genuine cider press, trolley rides, a hay maze, and much more!

Family-friendly means affordable, and Camp Newaygo’s Halloweekend is only $5 per person or $18 for a family of four, which includes just about everything—including your choice of a family pumpkin or family scare-crow. Extra pumpkins will be available for purchase as well.

Also, the Tree Canopy Zip Line will be open to the public on October 24 from 4:00–6:00 p.m. and October 26 from 1:00–5:00 p.m. Soar 85 feet in the air through the tree canopy for over a thousand linear feet of adrenalin-pumping zip lines; how’s that for scary?! Riders must be at least 43 inches tall and weigh at least 65 pounds. All riders must sign a waiver, children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult, and parents or guardians must sign the waiver for children. The Loop Zip, which cov-ers the first two sections is $12 per rider; The Dual Zip, which is the lon-gest section and features two dueling zip lines is $15 per rider; or ride the Complete Canopy Tour for only $22 per rider. Just about anyone can do it with our easy-access launch/landing platforms accessed via stairs, and our smooth, gradual “walk-off/on” take-off and landing ramps. And you can relive your adventure in high definition with a recording from our GoPro helmet camera for only $35!

Volunteers are also needed to help decorate the cabins. If your group is interested, please contact Camp Newaygo before October 22. For ques-tions and group reservation information, contact Christa Smalligan at 231-652-1184 or email [email protected].

Camp Newaygo to Host Family-Friendly Halloweekend

We want to thank the community for their support of our 11th annual Tools for School program. The distribution expo took place on August 12 and 757 children of low-income Newaygo County families received new backpacks full of school supplies, ensuring they entered the school year in September on a level playing field. Including those we served after August 12th, we have given out 1,000 backpacks with supplies this year.

We could not do a program like this without the community’s support, both through donations of supplies and/or cash to purchase supplies, and volunteer time. We wish we could thank each and every one by name, but the list would be way too long for this publication.

We would like to specifically thank the following businesses and groups for their donations: Huntington Bank, Love INC, and Sodexo Corporate Services; and the following organizations for their presence at the expo where they gave out additional school supplies: Alpha Family Center, Catholic Charities of West Michigan, Child Adolescent Health Center, Community Development, Community Mental Health, DHS, District 10 Health Department, Webster House/Every Woman’s Place, and WISE.

We also want to call out and thank the Mobile Dentist for providing free dental check-ups; the following local hairdressers and barbers for offering free haircuts: Amber Bouwkamp (Focus Salon), Amy Coffee (independent stylist), Nancy Strutzel and Valerie Flynn (Upper Cuts), Abby Grove and Sara Wade (Design Company), and Ron Jenson (retired barber); and the summer staff of Camp Newaygo for face painting and keeping the kids entertained on a drizzly day. Finally, thank you to the Gerber Foundation and the Fremont Area Community Foundation for their generous financial support.

From the bottom of our hearts—we thank you all!

Tools For School a Rousing Success!

The Volunteer Resource Center of Newaygo County (VRC) empowers people to become engaged in their local communities through education, collaboration, and leadership. One of the ways the Center accomplishes that mission is through National Days of Service. These opportunities provide a way for people to have an immediate impact on their local community. Ideal for time-strapped individuals and families, National Days of Service connect people with opportunities to serve and engage teams of volunteers to complete a project at a local nonprofit or community organization.

Some recent local examples include putting together energy efficiency kits for people struggling to pay their heat and energy bills, making no-sew fleece blankets for homeless families or people in crisis, and repackaging bulk food items into family-size portions for the TrueNorth Food Pantry. National Days of Service have a variety of themes, but they all emphasize serving on one day—or even a few hours—to help others. These days of service are a great way to instill values in children from a young age and to get involved in serving their community.

The VRC of Newaygo County coordinates volunteer projects on the following National Days of Service:

The goal of 9/11 Day is to provide a positive way for all people to forever remember and pay tribute to the 9/11 victims, honor those that rose in service in response to the attacks, and remind people of the importance of working more closely together in peace to improve our world. This year, on September 11, 2014, over 300 Newaygo County students visited TrueNorth

Community Services and had the opportunity to talk to and learn from veterans, decorate goody bags that will be sent to soldiers overseas, and write thank you letters to local veterans and first responders.

For more than 20 years, USA WEEKEND Magazine, in collaboration with Points of Light, has put on Make A Difference Day—the nation’s largest day of community service. Make A Difference Day is a celebration of neighbors helping neighbors. Millions of volunteers from across the nation will unite in a common mission to improve the lives of others on Saturday, October 25, 2014.

Locally this year, the VRC of Newaygo County is hosting many county-wide volunteer projects to encourage families to Get Moving and Give Back! Projects include constructing a playground GAGA court, gleaning produce for the TrueNorth Food Pantry, and painting display shelves that will hold toys and other gifts for the Children’s Christmas Programs & Toys for Tots.

More information about this year’s Make A Difference Day can be found at www.truenorthservices.org/MDDay14.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’”

Americans across the country answer that question every year by coming together on the King Holiday to serve their neighbors and communities. The MLK

Day of Service calls for Americans from all walks of life to work together to provide solutions to our most pressing national problems.

Each year, TrueNorth Community Services and the Newaygo County People for Peace host a community event at the Fremont Area District Library to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. that includes a speaker, inspiring music, and a service project to follow. The next event will occur on January 19, 2015.

More information on local volunteer opportunities, National Days of Service, and the Volunteer Resource Center of Newaygo County can be found at www.newaygovolunteer.org.

Children’s Christmas Applications Due Dec. 10 The Christmas holiday is right around the corner, and at TrueNorth, we’re gearing up for one of our oldest and most treasured events—The Children’s Christmas Programs!

Applications are sent home with students in September, but they may also be obtained at the TrueNorth Service Center in Fremont, or in the Publications & Forms section at www.truenorthservices.org. Eligibility for CCP is based on income levels and the number of children in the household.

For questions on eligibility, please contact our Special Project Coordinator, Nettie Uplinger at 231-924-0641 x 116, or [email protected].

The Children’s Christmas Programs date back to the early 1950’s and has been bringing the joy of the holidays to the children of low-income families every year since.

This year over 3,000 local children in need are expected to participate in CCP. Organizers are asking anyone who would like to give the gift of hope and provide lifelong memories for children in need to please make a financial gift to this 62 year-old holiday Program. Every child will receive a warm hat, mittens or gloves, socks, toys, books, a puzzle or game, and art supplies. Your compassion and financial gift will not only help bring smiles to the children’s faces but also create hope for their futures.

TrueNorth has partnered locally for several years with Toys For Tots and accepts donations of new, unwrapped toys, books, games, and socks (any size and color). Collection boxes will be located at a variety of sites throughout Newaygo County—including most public schools—from November 10 until December 12.

Every Wednesday, for several years now, John and Denise Dill and Mike Bennett have been volunteering as a crew in the Food Pantry. Working a regular shift, 12:30–4:30 p.m., they assist clients with food selection and keep the shelves well stocked. John even assisted in putting together the shelving units we use in the Pantry! Having long-term, committed volunteers working a regular shift is invaluable to TrueNorth as it brings consistency to this much-used and much-needed service.

Like many people, they were quite busy with jobs and kids when they were younger, but now that they have the time, they wanted to use it to help others in need. John and Denise’s involvement with TrueNorth goes back 35 years to the Gene Cotton days, when we were known as NCCS, and the agency rented storage space in their pole barn for some of the canned food items that were given out via the Food Pantry, as well as some building supplies used in housing renovations.

They’ve even gone so far as to recruit new volunteers for us, directing friends of theirs who were looking for meaningful volunteer opportunities towards our Bulk Food Repackaging needs.

“We had a shortage of people doing the repackaging, so it was great that the Dills were able to help us out that way,” said Community Food Programs Manager, Brad Hasting.

“I’d encourage anyone looking for a great volunteer experience to take the step… I did, and I’m still here!” said Mike Bennett.

BBBS of Newaygo County Puts National Parks in Focus

In August, the Udall Foundation continued its eighth summer of Parks in Focus programming with TrueNorth Community Services, leading a group of 10 Newaygo County youth on a six-day photographic exploration of some of northern Michigan’s most scenic public lands, including Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and Seney National Wildlife Refuge.

Each summer since 2007, middle school youth, ages 11–13, from Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) of Newaygo County and other TrueNorth Community Services youth programs have participated in Parks in Focus—a program of the Udall Foundation that connects underserved youth to nature through photography.

Over the course of the program, participants are introduced to the natural and cultural history of the places they visit while learning basic photography and participating in a wide range of educational and recreational activities like hiking, camping, and canoeing.

“TrueNorth’s partnership with the Udall Foundation on Parks in Focus has provided incredible opportunities for BBBS youth to use

photography to express themselves creatively, increase their self-esteem and connect with the natural world,” said Lisa Daniell, program director for BBBS of Newaygo County. “We look forward to continuing and expanding this partnership to reach more Newaygo County youth and to provide additional opportunities for our past participants to continue visiting parks, taking photographs and engaging with nature.”

Following this week-long trip, a photo exhibit and slideshow occurred at TrueNorth Community Services. This event exhibited 11 x 14 canvas prints taken by each participant. This photo exhibit will also be featured at NCCA’s the Artsplace in late September, and will be shown at the Newaygo County Visitors Center later this year as well. These Parks in Focus summer activities were supported by a Summer Youth Initiative grant from the Fremont Area Community Foundation.

In continuation of outdoor exploration, education and experiences, Parks in Focus will also be hosting alumni outings for past participants to attend. These outings, generously funded by the Gerber Foundation will take place between October 2014 and May 2015.

Youth ConnectionTrueNorth Youth Development programs ensure that youth thrive. Through youth leadership development, family engagement, enhanced social and educational outcomes, and support of positive developmental assets, we enable our youth to reach their full potential.

In other words, TrueNorth Youth Development programs empower youth to:• Grow Up (life-shaping character assets)• Reach Out (healthy relationships)• Give Back (socially-responsible civic involvement)

The Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) philosophy is a simple one: create friendship with a child based on mutual trust and respect in a structured mentoring environment and the positive effects will naturally occur. The primary emphasis of this program is for the volunteer to be a positive influence and role model for the child.

Faster than an empty food pantry.

More powerful than homelessness.

Able to make a difference in the life of a child.

Look! It’s a genuine, everyday hero;

Everyday heroes come in all shapes, sizes, ages and colors. There are obvious heroes that we all celebrate like soldiers, firefighters, and police officers. And there are less-obvious heroes like teachers, mentors, and the good Samaritan who helps a stranger on the side of the road.

Everyday heroes make their small corners of the world better, safer places, and by pooling together the good, we help more, serve more, and make a bigger difference! TRUENORTH COMMUNITY SERVICES IS that catalyst for good, and we’re LOOKING FOR HEROES... EVERYDAY HEROES JUST LIKE YOU!

Since 1972, the members of TrueNorth Community Services have provided the foundation necessary to fight life’s super villains. This past August, TrueNorth provided 1,000 new backpacks filled with school supplies for students in need and fed 2,023 Newaygo County men, women and children through the Food Pantry.

We invite you to suit up as an Everyday Hero through membership with TrueNorth Community Services and be a part of the LEAGUE OF EVERYDAY HEROES. Join us as we fight life’s “super villains” by providing food, warmth, light, shelter, mentoring, and many other of life’s needs. With your tax-deductible membership, programs like Children’s Christmas, Big Brothers Big Sisters and Foreclosure Prevention can continue to make a permanent positive change in the lives of area families.

Please join us today.

TrueNorth’s Housing and Family Services strive to restore families to a condition that is not dominated by crisis and stress by meeting immediate, basic needs. Further, TrueNorth case managers routinely collaborate with other local human service agencies to help families create long-term solutions that prevent future crises and lead to greater self-sufficiency.
