MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR OF THE CDCE:

Welcome to the Holocaust Literacy Program sponsored by the Center for Democracy and Citizenship Education (CDCE) at West Virginia University. I am very excited that you are a part of this program and trust you will thoroughly appreciate Marion Blumenthal-Lazan as she speaks about her unforgettable memoir, Four Perfect Pebbles: A Holocaust Story.

This program is part of the CDCE’s “Heroes in History,” series which brings to life important figures and events of our shared American and world history. Bringing Marion Blumenthal -Lazan and her story to Morgantown, West Virginia will help our youth identify and relate to specific events that have helped define us as a nation and as a people. In addition, this Holocaust Education Program will remind us of the tremendous responsibility we hold as citizens of America to respect and be tolerant of all people despite differences. I know you will appreciate Marion’s words of courage, hope, and the will to survive.

It is the challenge of the CDCE to help revitalize the historic American Civic Education. This most certainly will require a commitment on the part of the higher education community, the education profession, and, of course the general public to restore a degree of integrity and importance for civic knowledge. I trust this program will represent these ambitious goals.

On behalf of the CDCE and the College of Human Resources and Education, I appreciate your attendance and participation today as Marion Blumenthal- Lazan visits West Virginia University.
