It was good to hear the tutor meetings, termly reports, increased communication (now emailed), exhibitions, house system, vertical tutor groups and Real Learning week, all introduced this year, were felt to be working well. It was also important for us to hear we need to continue to improve our approach to homework, maintain the high uniform standards and further recognise the many achievements and contributions of students across the school. THE CAUSEWAY CONNECTION ‘A STAR IS BOURNE’ - FIRST PLACE TO CAUSEWAY On Friday evening, The Causeway school hosted the 8th Eastbourne school’s talent show ’A Star is Bourne’. Orianna Spooner and Yazlyn Wilson wowed the judges and audience with a beautiful rendition of ‘Ave Maria’ and scooped first place for The Causeway School. This is a remarkable achievement as the competition was fierce. Other special mentions must got to Matthew Cruden-Meech, Karl Foxall, Max Pearcy and Omar Mohammed who performed as a band, Eilis Bowie and Owen Wilson for compèring, and Liam Rakow for being solely responsible for the lighting of the production. Everyone who took part was an excellent representative for the school. Congratulations to all for their amazing efforts. As it is the summer term and the weather is getting warmer, I would just like to remind everyone of our uniform standards. Skirts should be worn to the knee and no shorter. Shirts should be tucked in and jumpers should be worn outside of the classroom. Staff will allow students to remove their jumpers during lessons. Blazers do not need to be worn.

With a view to the next academic year, please do not purchase ‘skinny fit’ or ‘slim fit’ trousers. This applies to both boys and girls. Only straight and bootcut styles will be permitted. More information about uniform standards will be posted to you this term. If you are unsure whether an item of clothing is suitable please do not hesitate to email me at [email protected]

Mrs Alexander, Deputy Headteacher

Please can I ask that when dropping off or collecting students, parents and carers do not stop their cars on the double yellow lines or the pedestrian crossing? We want to keep our students and other road users as safe as possible. Please also remind your children that they should only cross the road at the pedestrian crossing.

The canteen team have launched a customer suggestion scheme and are looking for suggestions as to what you would like to see on sale in the canteens. We would also like to know your thoughts on how we can improve the service we give, especially any suggestions to ensure healthy eating. The slips and boxes are available by the tills. We look forward to hearing your ideas.

The Canteen Baking Club has been working hard and has so far raised £434.90 for our charity ‘Children With Cancer UK’. We would appreciate your help in reaching our summer target of £500 so please do come and see us. The products for sale can be purchased from the lower canteen, and can be found next to the till. Thank you.

CANTEEN NEWS

A WORD FROM THE ENGLISH DEPARTMENT

UNIFORM

VIVOS

On Tuesday 17 June, The Causeway School was invited to take a group of Year 9 students to the Eastbourne campus of The University of Brighton. Students were given the opportunity to experience what being a university student studying a sports course was like.

Students were given a tour of the amazing sports facilities that they would be using as a PE or Sports Coaching undergraduate, and two of the university’s student ambassadors gave students a session in street surfing. It emerged that Jason Parker and Lauren Pearson were real experts at this difficult activity, and after a lot of practice, we all managed to get the hang of it (including Mr Finney).

We were also able to get involved in the Sports Science Department where the students were shown the ice baths and heat chambers that have been used by many famous athletes to test and improve their fitness, including Paula Radcliffe. The students were then put through their paces on lots of activities, testing speed, strength, power and balance. It was a fantastic day that has broadened the students’ horizons and gave them an indication

of potential post-16 pathways.

YEAR 9 TRIP TO THE UNIVERSITY OF BRIGHTON

THE CAUSEWAY SCHOOL FOOTBALL GALA TEAM

Ms Edwards, Subject Leader English

A huge well done to all students for completing their exams. Year 10 have theirs to come on Monday but Years 7, 8 and 9 are fully tested. Practicing exams has taught students that we all have to manage our time effectively in the exam. The golden rules are: We should read the questions carefully. We should always check over our work. We should revise fully and prepare. Whatever the results these exam skills are vital in life. Work now continues in class to complete amazing projects.

Year 7: have you written your Cirque du Freak fictional pieces? Are you ready to create a new chocolate product? Year 8: are you working hard to produce a project on the novel you have studied which will inform, entertain and impress any reader? Year 9: you have started your GCSE literature preparation, comparing two highly respected novels, Of Mice and Men and To Kill a Mocking Bird. We are looking forward to reading your essays.

Year 10: let’s make sure that by the end of this year all of your coursework and controlled assessments are on, or preferably above target. You cannot believe how much pressure this will take off of you for next year, the most important school year of your life!

ROAD SAFETY

At the recent annual Football Gala, a Gifted and Talented team made up of footballers from Years 8, 9 and 10, took on a well drilled and established ‘All Stars Soccer Academy’ under 15s team.

The Causeway boys played an exciting and well organised brand of football. All of those who played acquitted themselves excellently, with notable performances from Jack Murphy in goal, Harry Pearson and Thomas Larby in

defence and Samuel Hart and Charlie Chambers working tirelessly in the midfield. We look forwards to seeing them continue to develop as individuals and as a team.
