Annual Report 2013-2014 2

Dear Friends of Catholic High,

Catholic High is 75 years strong! In January, 2014 we kicked off our 75th Anniversary Celebration. New banners were hung in front of the school, Edison Highway is now Catholic Highway, an anniversary webpage was introduced and monthly events for our students marked the beginning of our celebration. On March 20th, a wonderful event honoring Th e Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia and celebrating our current students was held. All in attendance felt the spirit and let their light shine! As a graduate of Catholic High, I am proud to be a part of this exciting time!

Th e 57 Seniors of the Class of 2014 were awarded $3,932,874 in scholarships, grants, and awards, and gained acceptance into colleges and universities such as Dartmouth, Washington University of St. Louis, Columbia, and University of Maryland Honors College.

Our STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Program continues to attract creative and visionary minds and accepted students in our new Medical Exploration and McCaff erty Visual & Performing Arts Programs more than doubled.

During this historic year, we recognize the overwhelming generosity of all our donors. We are pleased to present this Annual Report acknowledging our many benefactors. Once again, our Board of Trustees and faculty/staff achieved 100% participation representing their commitment to our mission and students. Our Reunion Class Giving Program and Alumnae Awards Assembly are also highlighted in this report.

Catholic High remains strong in its 75th year due to the commitment, vision, and passion of many volunteers and donors. Every gift makes a diff erence in helping us to provide a community in which young women are empowered. On behalf of our students, I extend my deepest appreciation for your continued support and confi dence in our future.

Sincerely,

class of 1965, has most defi nitely “Let her Light Shine” in the world. She is one of the most accomplished people you will ever meet. To put this in perspective, she has achieved more in one lifetime than most people could in two. Linda has her Master’s in Education from Loyola University, is a Certifi ed TEP, Certifi ed Health Education Specialist, ACE Gold Certifi ed Health Coach, ACE certifi ed MINDBODY specialist, IDEA Master Trainer, and Certifi ed Post-Rehab Fitness Specialist. In addition, Linda is an American Council on Exercise Gold Certifi ed Personal Trainer and ACE Certifi ed Fitness Instructor. She has certifi cations in Yoga, indoor cycling and Zumba instruction. Linda is also a Certifi ed Usui Reiki Master Teacher and Certifi ed Lightarian Master Practitioner. She and Karen Carnabucci collaborated to write a book named Healing Eating Disorders with Psychodrama and Other Action Methods - Beyond the Silence and the Fury. Linda has held many jobs including a teaching position at Catholic High, educating students in English and public speaking. She also worked at Stevenson University as Director of Events, a teacher of Drama and Communication, and designed and taught Health and Wellness classes. She applies her multiple certifi cations as a personal trainer and fi tness instructor. Additionally Linda is a Psychodramatist, Workshop Facilitator, and Certifi ed Health Education Specialist. She has received awards such as the Zerka Moreno Award by the ASGPP (2008) and the Gratitude Award from the Mid Atlantic Chapter AGPP (which she received on October 4, 2014, the Feast of St. Francis). Th e Who’s Who of American Women, and the Who’s Who Registry of Business Leaders have honored Linda’s professional work and contributions to her fi eld. She has presented widely at regional, national and international conferences.

Linda demonstrates the Franciscan Core Values of Personhood in Community, Loving Service, Ongoing Conversion, Witness to Justice, Peace and Reconciliation, and Stewardship. She walks through the world representing them every day. Personhood in Community is showing dedication and passion for something in the world. Linda does that through her work not only as a physical presence but as a voice and as an advocate for the well-being of others suff ering from trauma and eating disorders. She gives of herself through loving service. If anyone is in need of help, she is always there to the rescue. Linda donates her counseling services to people who cannot aff ord it. She also donates her personal training services to a number of charitable organizations for fundraisers. Ongoing conversion is present in Linda through her spiritual life. Linda said, “I bring strong spirituality into life and work. I try to live in a way that demonstrates connection to the Divine.” Linda has a strong spiritual connection, and it is fully present in her work. “I do nothing by myself, I have a partnership with the Divine that I share with others.” Linda is a witness to justice as an advocate for coverage of mental health services to those who need help. She also reaches out to professionals in underserved areas so that they experience methods of education. Peace and Reconciliation is a Franciscan Core Value that Linda exemplifi es as she helps others to fi nd peace within themselves. She helps heal ruptured relationships with people and the Divine, as well as relationships within themselves. Linda demonstrates stewardship in a special way to Catholic High. To Linda, the education she received is something she cherishes and holds dear to her heart. She never wants a student to have to leave Catholic High because of her fi nances. Her passion for education sparked a fi re in her to create a scholarship fund known as the “Alice Miller Runkles Scholarship Fund.” Th is scholarship is given to students in their junior and senior years to assist with funding their Catholic High education. Linda created this scholarship in memory of her aunt, Alice Miller Runkles ’47, who had a great impact on her life.

To be chosen for the Mother Generosa McCaff erty Distinguished Alumna Award one must demonstrate Franciscan values and be an outstanding alumna. Th is year’s recipient is Linda Miller Ciotola. Linda, graduate of the

and leadership. When Barbara graduated from Catholic High, she set her eyes on business school. She soon learned it was not the place for her. She took an accounting position at BGE where she thrived. She advanced in that profession and found what she loved to do. Barbara stated she never thought she would work in accounting, but she is glad she did.

At Catholic High Barbara learned several important lessons on life, which helped her become so successful. One of the many tips she learned is to give everything your all, all the time. Another lesson learned was to do your best to help in every way you can. With these guidelines, Barbara has gone very far in life and has been empowered to never give up.

Lux Tua Luceat Service AwardBarbara Skotarski Ferrara ’68

By Casey Kopasek ’15 Along with serving at the soup kitchen, Barbara donates food to her church’s pantry which benefi ts anyone who is in need and helps give out food baskets for Th anksgiving and Christmas. She also supports others through monetary contributions to the Archbishop’s Lenten appeal. In addition, Barbara is a Red Cross blood donor of 20 years. Barbara said, “I am a strong believer in the power of prayer and pray for justice and peace throughout the world every day.” Barbara is still heavily involved in the Catholic High community and is serving as President of the Alumnae Association. Th is is a very large role, and she handles it with grace. Barbara has also been a member of the Catholic High Gala Committee for the past few years and has served as the Decorations Chair. “I feel incredibly lucky to have someone like Barbara on board,” said Kim Lynch, Coordinator of Event Planning for the Institutional Advancement Department. “She is so creative and is always bringing fresh and bright ideas to the table. She is a dream to work with and is always willing to go the extra mile for Catholic High!” Barbara also volunteers her time helping at other various events including the Spring Fling and Wine Tasting. In addition, Barbara helps with annual mailings and assembling beautiful baskets for events. She also recently helped decorate the Heritage Room.

Barbara Skotarski Ferrara, graduate of Catholic High’s class of ’68, was the recipient of the 2013 Lux Tua Luceat award. Barbara serves the church, the poor, and Catholic High through her dedicated service

Dr. Barbara Nazelrod, President of Catholic High and classmate of Barbara’s shared, “As President of Catholic High’s Alumnae Association, Mrs. Ferrara is one of our most involved supporters and volunteers. She assists the school community in many ways, and is never far from the heartbeat of Catholic High. Mrs. Ferrara is most deserving of the Lux Tua Luceat award, as she is exemplary in her service to Catholic High.”

Barbara is now retired and is traveling the world with her husband. One of Barbara’s most recent adventures was traveling to Africa for a safari! She loves to spend time with her three grandchildren. She says she is very fortunate with what she has and where she is in life. Catholic High helped mold her and get her to where she is today.

She is very active in her church community at St. Joseph Fullerton. Barbara has volunteered at Beans and Bread once a week for the past three years with her church. Beans and Bread provides a variety of services such as giving meals to the hungry, recreational activities, employment services, and more. Beans and Bread provides many steps to help those who have fallen into poverty or in need. It also serves a greater purpose of improving society and making the world a better place.

has since thrived in the workplace, community, and church. She has applied everything she has learned from Catholic High as a student into her everyday life.

In 2004, Amanda graduated Summa Cum Laude from Towson University with a Bachelor of Science and Computer Information Systems. By the time she graduated, she had already held three jobs and gained extensive amounts of knowledge. Amanda came back “home” to Catholic High in 2010 as the Director of Technology and Computer Science Instructor. Aside from her job at Catholic High, Amanda and her husband own a business named Byteable Solutions, LLC. It is located in Harford County, Maryland, and provides technical consulting to small businesses, non-profi t organizations, and home computer users.

“A community is everyone coming together for a purpose.” Amanda stated, “Community is giving of yourself… I want to see others succeed, and giving of my time is the best way I can do so.” Because of all the support she has been given, giving back is a priority. Amanda loves seeing the outcome. She is very active in her communities at Catholic High and Church. Along with her job at Catholic High, she is part of the Alumnae Association as the Chair of the Networking Committee. She wants to see Catholic High thrive, wants to see the Alumnae Association grow, and would encourage younger Alumnae to keep in touch with Catholic High. Amanda is working with Amber Garrison on the “Career Corner” of the Alumnae newsletter. In the career corner, Alumnae can inform each other of job openings. “Keeping in touch is networking, it is how you can fi nd out about opportunities.” said Amanda. To Amanda, keeping in touch is very important because you can network your way through and fi nd out about opportunities you would never have known about.

Amanda also demonstrates her leadership and service in her church community. Amanda is very involved in Our Lady of Fatima Church in Baltimore City. Before the school of Our Lady of Fatima closed, Amanda tried to help the community keep it alive. She volunteered at the school carnival and bingo. Amanda is helping steer the church in the right direction as part of the Steering Committee and Pastoral Council, as well as a Lector during mass. In the past she was a Eucharistic Minister and Altar Server. Robert Fletcher explains how accomplished Amanda is, “Amanda Trapani was an outstanding Catholic High student and is an outstanding employee. She possesses a unique problem solving ability that is a result of poise, thoroughness, and proactive planning. She successfully manages a challenging technology department that requires planning, implementing, supervising, and evaluating. Her technology support staff benefi t from the learning atmosphere and the stress free environment that she continually maintains. Amanda Trapani is truly a benefi t to Th e Catholic High School of Baltimore.”

Th e Distinguished Recent Alumna AwardAmanda George Trapani ’00

It is no small honor receiving the Distinguished Recent Alumna Award. Th is year’s recipient, Amanda George Trapani, is a very accomplished Catholic High alumna of fourteen years. Amanda graduated in 2000, and

Amanda has been traveling on a long road towards success. Catholic High was the fi rst leg of her preparation for this journey by teaching her all about technology. When Amanda graduated from Catholic High, she attended college. Wanting to learn more and to grow in technology, Amanda went to Towson University. While attending Towson she came back to Catholic High to work part time in the technology department until 2003. Catholic High yet again prepared her for her future.

Amanda has always shown humility in the workplace, saying, It’s never just come to work: “I always get something out of it.” Amanda looks brightly towards the positions she has held. She added, “Th ere has never been a job I wanted to leave, and I’ve never felt negative towards new jobs.” In the workplace Amanda is the problem solver, always trying to fi nd solutions. She is very detail-oriented with effi cient organizational and technical document writing skills. Her goal is to always improve herself, and she is always challenging herself.

gifts planned for the futureA Bequest is a gift made by a provision in one’s will naming Catholic High as benefi ciary.

It can reduce estate tax.

A Charitable Gift Annuity allows the donor to receive benefi ts for his or her lifetime and to qualify for a charitable tax deduction. This form of support is attractive when one has

highly appreciated assets.

A Charitable Remainder Trust transfers assets to a trustee, who in turn manages the trust and pays income back to the donor for life, or for a specifi c period of time. When the trust

terminates, the remainder passes to the school. Benefi ts include an income tax deduction, the avoidance of capital gains tax (when appreciated securities are used), as well as an

estate tax reduction.

If Catholic High is named as the owner and benefi ciary of a life insurance policy, the policy becomes eligible for a tax deductible gift.

For more information about giving to Catholic High, contact Dori DiVenti, Director of Institutional Advancement, at 410.732.6200 ext. 243 or ddiventi@thecatholichighschool.

gifts for current programsA gift of cash is the most common gift, often given in the form of a personal check

payable to Catholic High. Credit card gifts are becoming more popular because of our online capabilities and the rewards off ered by particular credit card companies. Many donors prefer to make a pledge as it gives them the opportunity to complete their gift

over a period of time.

A gift of stock may be transferred to Catholic High, avoiding capital gains tax.

There are several options available when dealing with gifts of property. An outright gift of a house, land, or vacation property avoids capital gains tax and entitles the donor to a tax deduction for the full value of the gift. There are also options that allow the donor to

give property and retain the use of it for his or her lifetime.

More than 1,000 companies participate in matching gift programs. Many times, a gift can have a double eff ect because of an employer’s matching gift. When making this type of gift, a donor must mail the matching gift form provided by his or her human resources

department with the gift.

The Tau Society honors a committed and special group of benefactors who choose to include The Catholic High School of Baltimore in their estate plans or in any planned gift arrangement. Upon making an estate gift, these individuals become members of The Tau Society. To thank members, we invite them to participate in the annual President’s Reception and recognize them in the Annual Report of Gifts.
