Today’s Gospel is astounding! Jesus took three disciples with him to a mountaintop to pray.

Before their very eyes, his appearance was gloriously transformed. Two prophets from long ago

then appeared and spoke with Jesus about his imminent death. Can we even begin to imagine

the emotions that surface in the three as they witness the unfolding scene? No strangers to

Jesus’ miracles, even they must have agreed that this moment surpassed anything that they had

ever seen!

Although filled with a desire to sleep, “they stayed awake” and beheld the ultimate splendour of

Jesus. They heard the voice of his father proclaim, “This is my Son, my Chosen; listen to Him!”

What was their inner response? Fear? Awe and wonder? A deepened awareness of the identity

of Jesus? A new sense of mission?

As followers of Jesus, we too, must “stay awake” to recognise his presence in the myriad

situations of our lives. We don’t hear God’s voice coming from a cloud, but when we listen, we

hear God’s voice in the silence of our hearts.

God also speaks to us through contemporary prophets who guide us on our spiritual journey.

At the moment of the Transfiguration, Peter and his companions beheld the face of Jesus. Our

hearts longingly cry out, “Your face, O Lord, do I seek.”

Thank you to all our families who attended our School

Mass last Sunday. It was a wonderful celebration to start

our school year. This year being the Year of Mercy the

Staff have decided to hold a Car Wash on Saturday 5th

March starting at 11.00am, and any money raised would

go towards helping parents with the increase in

attendance dues this year. Please support and encourage

your friends to come along to the car wash. We have new

signs around the school. These are the sayings of St.

Mary of the Cross MacKillop and remind us of why we are

at St. Joseph’s School and the charism of our Sisters. Visit our new website -www.sportsground.co.nz/

We celebrate our Beginning School Mass at St. Peter

Chanel on 6 March at the 10am Mass. We join the

Hibernian Society in celebrating this Mass. After Mass we

are having a celebration picnic at St. Mary’s School hosted

by our Home and School Association – there will be ‘fun

and games’ not unlike the Hibernian Picnics of old.

Everyone is invited to attend – grandparents, neighbours,

Passionist Family Groups, Hibernian members, school

families. EVERYONE!!!!!!

(After a Religious Education lesson on Lent one of my little

ones asked “Is this all true?” I replied simply “Yes.” I

suspect there will be more questions!!!!!!

Congratulations to William Sheardown who was

commissioned as Head Boy of St John’s College for 2016.

He will be ably assisted by Sam Thompson and Daniel

in our College leadership. Please keep these young

leaders in your prayers as well as our newly appointed

Prefects. The College held a parent information evening

on Monday for year 9, 10 and 11 students. It was a great

way to pass on information about the role of house

teachers, sports academies, career paths

and partnerships between home and school. Thank you to

the many parents who attended.

Best of both Worlds - B Basset SJ

The Dawes are a suburban family, part of the trilogy written by Fr. Basset on the pitfalls and joys of the ordinary family

trying to follow the spiritual journey of life, this time with the assistance of Mrs. Carey, a memorable character. Known

for his wit and sense of humour, Fr. Basset has written a heart-warming book on the Dawes, with situations we will

recognise, treated with compassion and humour as the Dawes learn to enjoy this life more deeply as they prepare for

the next. Proof that a religious book does not have to be either dull or gloomy, this is an enjoyable read.
