T h e P a p e r Pulpit 16h Sunday in Ordinary Time
38 Now as they went on their way, he entered a village; and a woman named Martha received him into her house.39
And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet and listened to his teaching.40 But Martha was distracted
with much serving; and she went to him and said, "Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell
her then to help me."41 But the Lord answered her, "Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many
things;42 one thing is needful. Mary has chosen the good portion, which shall not be taken away from her." Luke 10:38-42
Jesus knew about the basic human needs to which Martha with traditional hospitality was responding. However,
he was also aware of a deeper human hunger that things like food, drink, shelter, and health cannot satisfy. It is the
hunger for personal encounter—the hunger to be in personal communion with another in mutual self-giving. This
deepest of all human hungers is satisfied to some degree in human friendship; ultimately, only in friendship with God.
Saint Augustine prayed, "You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in you."
Julian of Norwich, like so many saints, expressed the same truth, "For by nature our will wants God, and the good will
of God wants us. We shall never cease wanting and longing until we possess him in fullness and joy.”
Is it any wonder Jesus said that Mary had chosen the better part?
How are we to understand the complementarity of Martha's generous hospitality in meeting Jesus' need for food
and Mary's longing for personal communion with him? In response, we might follow the way of Jesus. He fed the
hungry, cured the sick and expelled demons of every kind as an expression of love. In other words, our love must also
become incarnate in whatever we do to meet the needs of others. Thus, our good work--whether cooking a
meal or voting for a bill in congress—really is done with prayer.
Let me conclude with a couple of examples. A young monk had questions about the order's motto: "Pray and Work."
So, one day, the abbot invited him to row across the lake with him. The abbot rowed first--but with one oar. As a
result, the boat went in circles, and they made no progress. The young monk said,” Abbot, unless you row with both
oars, you won't get anywhere." The abbot replied, "You're so right, son! The right oar is prayer; the left is work.
Unless you use them together, you just go in circles." I often see folks going in circles, usually because they are only
using the right oar.
One of the ironies of modern life is that the very devices that save us time and energy (computers, smart phones,
household appliances, etc.) often impose new burdens upon us. We can become slaves to our machines. We can spend
all our lives acting like Martha, so overwhelmed with practical duties that we end up intellectually and spiritually
empty. Now, perhaps more than ever, we also need to give ourselves time and space in which to think and pray. This
is the “better part” Mary chose. Giving time to contemplation does not mean neglecting the practical dimensions of
our lives. Rather, it means giving ourselves the opportunity to place what we do in the larger context of our lives and
our relationships with God and others. We need to be both Mary and Martha. In the midst of the many duties and
responsibilities modern life imposes on us, we need to make time and space to sit beside Mary at the feet of Jesus and
renew ourselves intellectually and spiritually.
Is your life going in circles? How much time will you spend in prayer this week? Try using the right oar more.
You never know. Maybe your life will get back on track.
God’s Blessings,
Fr. Jim Trempe
