The Assumption of Our Lady

On Wednesday, August 15, the Church celebrates as a Holy Day of Obligation the great Solemnity of the Assump-tion of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Though the Assumption was formally defined as a dogma in modern times, the liturgical observance of Our Lady’s bodily translation to heaven is the oldest feast of Mary, dating back to the earli-est centuries of Christian worship.

At the time of the building of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in AD 336, the faithful were known to venerate a sacred site near Mount Zion as the “Place of Dormition,” the spot of Mary’s “falling asleep.” But this “tomb of Mary” always had more in common with the empty tomb of her Son than with any of the other holy places associ-ated with the deaths of saints and martyrs. All of the apostolic testimonies concur in noting that there are no relics of Mary to venerate, for the Mother of God was taken, body and soul, right to heaven. For a time, the “Memory of Mary,” as the feast came to be known, was kept only in Palestine, but then it was extended by the emperor to all the churches of the East. In the seventh century, it began to be celebrated in Rome under the title of the “Falling Asleep” (Dormitio) of the Mother of God. From Anglo-Saxon times, the feast of the Assumption was celebrated in England as Our Lady’s greatest festival, and King Alfred ordered the day kept with the utmost splendor and digni-ty.

In 1950, in the Apostolic Constitution Munificentissimus Deus, Pope Pius XII solemnly declared the ancient belief in the Assumption of Mary a formal dogma of the Catholic Church with these words: “The Immaculate Mother of God, the ever-virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heav-en.” With the promulgation of the dogma, a new Mass was composed to affirm the incomparable dignity of the Blessed Virgin in her apocalyptic and celestial radiance, as we hear sung in the Introit Signum Magnum: “There appeared a great wonder in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet; and upon her head, a crown of twelve stars.”

Coming a week after the Transfiguration, the festival of Our Lady’s Assumption affirms in corollary and comple-mentary terms the exaltation of the Mother of God, she who shared her Son’s glorification in fullest measure, body and soul, and she who points our way to beatitude: “All generations shall call me blessed: For He that is mighty hath magnified me; and Holy is His Name.” Dr. Clint Brand

Prayer Book English and the Collect for the Eleventh Sunday after Trinity

The distinctive language of the Ordinariate form of the Catholic Mass is sometimes loosely called “Tudor” or “Elizabethan” English. Though the liturgical idiom of our public prayer derives from the historic Book of Common Prayer as fashioned in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, it is important to realize that “Prayer Book English” represents a language of worship set apart from the speech patterns and diction of any particular historical era and sustained and developed over nearly five hundred years. Even in 1549, the English of the first Book of Common Prayer seemed faintly archaic, elevated, and certainly more digni-fied than the ordinary vernacular of the period. Rather, the language of the traditional Prayer Book repli-cates and simulates, in distinctively English rhythms, the style, tone, and measure of the liturgical Latin used in the earliest editions of the Roman Missal and of the Greek in the Divine Liturgies of the Eastern churches. Actually, “Prayer Book English” is a language of its own - stately, hieratic, and elegant, a lan-guage devised and honed for prayer addressed to the Triune God and for participation in the Sacred Mys-teries.

The collects, for example, appointed for the liturgical year in the Ordinariate Missal include many fine trans-lations from the ancient Roman sacramentaries, as well as several original prayers composed in the six-teenth and seventeenth centuries. Today’s collect is a translation of an old oration from the Gelasian Sac-ramentary, as gently revised and expanded in English for the Prayer Book of 1662:

O GOD, who declarest thy almighty power most chiefly in showing mercy and pity: mercifully grant unto us such a measure of thy grace; that we, running the way of thy commandments, may obtain thy gracious promises, and be made partakers of thy heavenly treasure; through Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, ever one God, world without end. Amen.

The English phrase “may obtain thy gracious promises” expands on the terse Latin original and connects back to the petition for “a measure of grace” to draw out the sense of straining forward to keep running the course that we may “be made partakers of thy heavenly treasure.” Strikingly appropriate to the long stretch of summer Trinitytide, this collect offers us the encouragement of grace as we push on through the last leg of the liturgical year: “let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith” (Hebrews 12:1). As summer progresses, so does the new Catholic high school study for Cathedral of Our Lady of Walsingham. A

School Study Committee is in place to move the process forward and provide leadership and expertise throughout

the study.

The New School Study Committee consists of Cathedral of Our Lady of Walsingham leadership. Their role is to

assist in evaluating the potential for a new Catholic high school; review research and reports provided by the con-

sultant; and provide insight, experience and vision throughout the study process.

At the present time, community demographic research is being conducted along with data gathering regarding

parish and Catholic school data trends in the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston. The goal of the data portion of

the study is to provide a foundation for determining the strength of the student-pool in areas from which the pro-

posed school could draw enrollment and ensure potential sustainability for the future.

Additionally, our consultant from the Meitler group is conducting meetings and interviews with a number of

individuals to enhance relationships, garner anecdotal information, and build interest and excitement in this

great initiative. Meetings include the Superintendent of Catholic Schools from the Archdiocese of Galveston-

Houston, local Catholic elementary school principals, and Catholic home school associations and related groups

to learn more about the local community and invite them to participate in this study.

Combined with a market research survey to be initiated in October of this year, the data findings and results will

demonstrate if this unique high school program is feasible. This determination leads to next steps which in-

clude developing a plan for the proposed school, estimating costs, creating a funding model, establishing a time-

line for next steps in planning and, ultimately, moving toward a campaign to open the school.
