Ongoing investment Ashley Furniture remains the largest furniture manufacturer in the U.S., with production facilities in Wisconsin, Mississippi, Pennsylvania and North Carolina that produce a mix of case goods and upholstery — more than two-thirds of the company’s product mix, according to Ashley. Having invested about $1 billion in its U.S. manufacturing and distribution facilities in the past four years, the company believes it is on solid ground should the need arise to shift some product back to the States. “We look at our position, and we say we consider the United States to be a great sourcing option,” said Todd Wanek, CEO. “We are really scanning the world and looking at what the world has to offer, but we really consider ourselves to be in a very strong position in terms of our upholstery manufacturing and our case goods manufacturing as well as our distribution centers.” He added that the U.S. facilities have a trained and capable workforce and also have the equipment needed to produce product across a variety of price points that can compete with goods coming from overseas. “We have promotional goods all the way up to better goods that we produce in the U.S.,” Wanek said. “We can produce comparable goods to what they do in Asia in terms of quality. And in price point, we are super competitive and in many cases can beat the foreign competition.” Ashley Chairman Ron Wanek said that having started many plants in the U.S. and overseas, the company has experienced firsthand the challenges involved in developing a timely and responsive manufacturing model. “To start a new facility today, whether in the U.S. or somewhere else, is certainly a complicated, drawn-out process,” he said. “It is a huge investment, and you suffer losses for several years. … You have to be really committed and have a long runway in being able to manufacturer in any area whether in the U.S. or in a foreign country. We have done this many times, in many countries, and believe me, it is a lot of pain to move product and start up manufacturing.” Yet having lived through these challenges, Wanek believes Ashley is in a strong position domestically and internationally to navigate the rough waters of China tariffs.
