Charter Schools are a Business

“We are in the business of education and not the entitlement of education.”Tim Kitts, Ed.D.

Budget mechanics

• Budget at 95% of anticipated FEFP.• Budget conservatively and only for items of need. Wants come from contingency and “soft money.”

• Hard money is recurring and soft money is one time money like grant money or fundraised money.

• Develop a 1,3,5 and 10 year plan. It will fluxuate with time, but should be a roadmap for making decisions.

Broadbase your business

• Develop multiple 501c3 organizations• 1. Have faculty and staff identify potential workers and leaders.• 2. Host a breakfast at the end of each year to promote each organization and its mission/goals.• 3. Sign people up. Get their emails in group. Provide them with a copy of the organizations annual plan for

fundraising and meetings.• 4. Provide food for meetings that include feeding their children and babysitting.• 5. Be formal and elite in running the meeting, but casual and social in interaction.• 6. Have the leaders of the school sit on every board except the governing board.• 7. Set up a team with scripts to call all parents of new incoming students. Do not say its mandatory, but imply it

is and expected function of attending the school to participate in these activities and organizations.
