“Putting Your Best Faith Forward” in the New Year

The New Year is often the perfect time to make a new start.

We make resolutions about how we’re going to handle our

money, or our health, or our relationships. But what if – as

we walk into the months ahead – the most important thing

isn’t to put our best foot forward, but to put our best faith

forward? What if our growth and success and happiness in

the coming year depends less upon what we resolve to do –

and more upon who we decide to trust? That’s the question

we’ll be asking in our pastor’s New Year sermon series:

“Putting Your Best Faith Forward.” By focusing on key

biblical stories and borrowing insights from John Ortberg’s If

You Want to Walk on Water, You’ve Got to Get Out of the

Boat, we’ll consider what it means to “step out in faith” in

the year ahead as we follow Jesus into abundant life.

Growing into a New Year

The New Year brings new opportunities to deepen your walk with Christ. The winter session of our

Mid-Week Ministry kicks off on Wednesday, January 10, with a snack supper at 5:45, followed by

discipleship groups for all ages. Adults will have three study options to choose from:

Essentials of Living Well through Faith (led by Jon Cawley): This topical Bible study will

encourage and equip you to live as God intended. Each lesson will help you evaluate your

walk with Christ and develop strategies for moving forward when it’s less than you desire.

Anxious for Nothing: Finding Calm in a Chaotic World (led by Becky Critz): This video-

assisted study by Max Lucado offers an exploration of God's “treatment plan” for anxiety and

will guide you toward a peace that "transcends all understanding" by helping you change the

way you look at your fears. A study guide ($8) is available; so please notify the church office

by Sunday, January 7 if you’d like to reserve a copy.

Tatting 101 (Led by Carol Lowe): “Tatting” is a process of making lace by tying knots, and

participants in this introductory class will learn how to use the foundational “double stitch” to

make rings and chains. Materials will be provided, and we will discuss where to find your own

supplies during the class sessions. This class is limited to 10 people; so please contact the

church office if you’d like to reserve a space. If you have further questions, contact Carol

Lowe.

Ministry Updates

New Ministry Beginning in February

Beginning February 4, our church will begin a new ministry

focusing on supporting those who live with mental health issues.

The new ministry is called Fresh Hope. The support group will

meet in the Chapel on Sunday evenings at 7:00 pm. For more

information, contact David Stone at [email protected].

Fresh Hope for Mental Health® is an international network of

Christian peer-to-peer mental health support groups whose

mission is to empower those with mental health challenges, along with their loved ones, to live full and rich

lives in spite of having a mental health diagnosis. Fresh Hope groups approach mental health recovery from a

hope and faith-filled perspective. The weekly sessions are open to anyone and there is no fee or financial

requirements. To learn more about Fresh Hope, visit www.FreshHope.us.

Let’s Go, Team Calvary!

At 5 o’clock on January 21, Calvary

will hold its first business meeting

of 2018. But at 4 o’clock that

afternoon, we’re asking everyone

who has agreed to serve on one of

our committees or teams – along

with anyone who’d like to get

connected to ministry in the coming

year – to join us for a “New Year

Dreaming Session.” We’ll select

leaders for each committee and

team; and we’ll identify key goals

for each ministry in the months

ahead. If you can’t attend but

would like to offer input, please

contact Pastor Alex.

Drummer Needed!

We are in need of a drummer for our Uplift service for a

few months. We rehearse on

Thursday nights at 7:00 p.m., and

then do a run through on Sunday

mornings at 7:30 a.m. before the

service. If you are interested, or

have any friends who might enjoy

playing drums here, please contact Teresa Martin.

Handbell Rehearsals Resume

The Adult Handbells will resume

rehearsals on Sunday evenings at 6:00

p.m. beginning January 21. Please contact

Beth Church for more information.

Youth Encounter

Meetings for Youth Encounter (grades 6th through

12th) will resume on Sunday evening January 14 at 5:30
