“The Wisdom and Power of God”1 Corinthians 1:18-21

From the Senior Pastor Feeling a bit like a racehorse at the starting gate, I am eager to take off running as I begin ministry with you this week! As I hope you are, I am excited about a new beginning and all the potential that fresh start holds for us all. As I begin to earnestly pray about what God would have me do first in leadership, He struck me with a clear and compelling need. Believing that God is doing something new in my life and yours, I quickly assumed that need was revival or renewal. Then I realized that revival is a result of what God wants us to do first. What God wants from us most is to seek Him above all and turn from anything that has kept us from Him so that He can bless us. A new pastor, new priorities, new programs, new plans, etc. are all secondary to God doing what God alone can and will do. So before I do another thing, I’m going to do this (and hope you’ll join me): “If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.” – 2 Chronicles 7:14 “If” – There’s a qualifier in this promise. Revival/renewal is not a guarantee. It is predicated on the right actions of God’s people. If we genuinely desire it and are willing to follow the Biblical guidelines for it, then we should expect to see it. If we do not, then we will not. “my people who are called by my name” – God clearly wants to begin a work of renewal, restoration, and revival with His own people. As Christians, we focus much on the sins of the world, and there is a place for that. But God promises to do a work from the inside out. If God’s true children at Calvary will do what this passage says, we have every reason to expect by faith that God will respond. “humble themselves” – Humility says the need isn’t with them, but with us. More

specifically, it is with me. Until a type of humility that recognizes that I/we may be a hindrance to, or a catalyst of, real revival sweeps over us, we should not expect much. Pride, self-sufficiency, and self-righteousness are all enemies of revival. As I pray, I am reminded that revival must start with me. I urge you to pray in that same manner. “pray and seek my face” – This sort of praying cannot be casual or flippant. “Seeking God’s face” must include passion, diligence, and patience. What Calvary – and by extension, Dothan – needs is not what I can offer, but what God alone can do. To seek God’s face is to spend enough time with Him until we sense His leadership and direction. Then, we trust in His power to accomplish His plan. “turn from their wicked ways” – There it is again – a focus on our/my wicked ways! Pray that God would reveal to you any sin whatsoever that hinders your relationship with him, affects your attitude towards His people, and limits the effectiveness of your testimony at home and in the community. I’m asking you to pray that because I’m praying that today! The undeniable prerequisite for the revival we desire is repentance. “then …” – God’s powerful response of hearing, forgiving, and restoring is a promise to us, His people in response to our sincerely desiring, intentionally humbling, earnestly praying, and honestly repenting. Join me in praying today and the days to come for our church, our community, and God’s plan for us all. I am praying that God will work in and through us for His glory in a way that causes us to recognize His hand and to give Him all the credit!

Soli Deo Gloria! Paul A. Thompson
