15th SUNDAY - YEAR C - 14th JULY 2019
SACRAMENTAL PROGRAMME 2019/2020
Can I invite all parents (only) who have enrolled their children on the Sacramental Programme to attend an “introductory” meeting with me on Wednesday 17th July in the Parish Centre (Davyhulme) at 7.00pm. This is to explain some minor change to the
programme that will occur this year.
Forms are now no longer available.
Dear Parishioners,
One of my favourite Irish Bands are from Donegal and are
called Goats don’t Shave.
In their song Las Vegas (In the Hills of Donegal) the following
lyrics are sung:
“And if I could I'd build a wall around old Donegal The north
and south to keep them out, by God I'd build it tall…”
I have to admit that occasionally when I reflect on the para-
ble in today’s Gospel I often find myself thinking about
walls, and remembering the response of Pope Francis to
Donald Trump when he said simply “Christians do not build
walls.”
In the parable we hear in todays Gospel, we see the dan-
gers of building walls.
In the parable we discover walls of purity, walls of ritual
and walls of ignorance. Walls built so thick and high that the
needs of the other, the stranger, our neighbour go unseen or
even deliberately ignored.
Walls - built in stone, flesh or thought - mean that we only
think about ourselves, we become selfish in our purity, self-
righteous in our own importance, and inevitably we cannot
see beyond ourselves. To build a wall is to make our world
smaller, to build a wall is to make us less human!
The priest and Levite, loved and respected within their
community build a wall, they build it by choosing to
step (or pass) to the other side.
Their hands are kept clean and their hearts are kept
pure, as they choose to ignore the humanity and need
of the one who lies behind the wall they have created.
It is the Samaritan, the outsider who chooses to tear
down the wall that his society had chosen to create, he
does this, as unlike, the priest and the Levite the out-
sider chooses to cross the divide, he chooses to reach
out to a fellow child of God who is in desperate need.
As Christian’s we do not keep God’s children out,
through love we must always choose to reach out to
them, and let them in.
In our world today it is easy to build walls that sepa-
rate us from each other, it is easy to walk past and
around the stranger who lies on the ground in need.
And yet as Christians we are not called to imitate the
world but to become more like Christ.
And Christ didn’t build walls, He didn’t turn a blind
eye to the fallen and the needy … and nor should we.
God Bless you & your families
Fr. Kieren

'The flight to Egypt,' he replied.
