December 6th Assembly meeting. Change of date due to holidays.

At our November business meeting wehad a motion for us to buy 10 boxes ofCoats for Kids. Per our rules we willhave a discussion and a vote on that atour December business meeting. I thinkthat we should go forward with thepurchase of the coats. I believe the needfor the coats is much bigger this year andwe should not leave a kid without a coatif we can do something about it.

We are having a Coats for Kids drive at thechurch on December 10th and 11th,please come to the back of the churchafter mass and offer your help with thecollection. The Chairman for Coats for Kidsis Jim Wood. Jim Wood, Bob Leewe andKen Pankowski will be speaking about theneed for coats for kids before all masses. We can hope that it will be a chillyweekend.

We had our Memorial Mass for ourdeceased brothers with a mass officiatedby our Chaplin, Fr. Ed. We received thesad news of our council’s foundingChaplin Abbot McCaffrey had passedaway. He was the one that put the “fire”in the charter members to start thecouncil. We owe him a Debt of Gratitudefor his unwavering support of our council.I think that most of us that knew himremember his “famous” words: Pray forme as I pray for thee. We should all try to

heed those words. He is now with God andI’m sure asking for favors for all of us.

Remember that we are having our councilChristmas party on December 4th from 2:00PM until 6:00 PM. All you have to bring isone unwrapped toy per person and Good

Christmas Cheer. Please call Ken Hein or JohnLuse to sign up so they know how much food tobuy. You can get all the info on Page 7.

GOOD OF THE ORDER! Please pray for:

The Members and Friends of our Council wish the following Brothers a Very Happy Birthday Duringthe Month of November. Don’t forget to wish them a Happy Birthday when you see them!

Adorers Needed - by Walt Edmonson

Thanks to Jim Adee

We thank you for this earth, our home; for the wide sky and the blessed sun, for the ocean and streams, forthe towering hills and the whispering wind, for the trees and green grass. We thank you for our senses by which we hear the songs of birds, and see the splendor of fields of goldenwheat, and taste autumn's fruit, rejoice in the feel of snow, and smell the breath of spring flowers.

Grant us a heart opened wide to all this beauty; and save us from being so blind that we pass unseeingwhen even the common thorn bush is aflame with your glory.

For each new dawn is filled with infinite possibilities for new beginnings and new discoveries. Life isconstantly changing and renewing itself. In this new day of new beginnings with God, all things are possible. We are restored and renewed in a joyous awakening to the wonder that our lives are and, yet, can be.

Amen.

6. Extra way to collect for HOPE donations; Historical dates in Decembers past

As those of you newsletter readers have found out, our collections forColumbus HOPE Foundation (Tootsie Roll Drive) are falling considerablybehind last year’s total. This was due partly because corporations havereduced the number of groups they will allow to collect donations in frontof their stores, and because a few store managers changed their mindsabout collections.

There is another way to collect donations, with less work, no standingout in the weather (hot, cold, rain, etc.) or having to stand if you are notable. Many local businesses, especially privately owned, Mom & Poptype stores will accept a donation box like the one on the right here.

This one comes with 2 keys (one for the placing Knight, and one for thecouncil). Then, just go by once a week and empty the box and bring thedonation (or count & write a check) and give to Bob Leewe, Jim Adee orany 8980 council officer. Use the form(s) below. Place as many as youcan. When you have a cooperating business, please call Ken Pankowskiat: 843-492-6062 or email at: [email protected] and abox will be given to you ASAP. Thank you for your help. Remember, it’sfor the Kids.

Past Historical events in DecemberDecember 1, 1955 - The birth of the modern American civil rights movement occurred as Rosa Parks was arrestedin Montgomery, Alabama, for refusing to give up her seat to a white man and move to the back section of amunicipal bus. Her arrest resulted in a year-long boycott of the city bus system by African Americans and led tolegal actions ending racial segregation on municipal buses throughout the South.

December 6, 1901 - Birthday - Walt Disney (1901-1966) was born in Chicago, Illinois. As a little boy, he liked todraw farm animals and eventually got a job as an artist. He moved to Hollywood and in 1928 produced SteamboatWillie, starring Mickey Mouse, in the first cartoon with synchronized sound. He opened the Disneylandamusement park in Anaheim, California, in 1955. Five years after his death, Disney World opened in Florida. Thecompany he founded has since grown into a global entertainment empire.

December 7, 1941 - The U.S. Naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, was attacked by nearly 200 Japanese aircraftin a raid that lasted just over one hour and left nearly 3,000 Americans dead.

December 9, 1886 - Birthday - American industrialist Clarence Birdseye (1886-1956) was born in Brooklyn, NewYork. He developed a method of deep-freezing foods and was one of the founders of General Foods Corp.

Identifying New Fundraising Opportunities and Events for CouncilThe Knights of Columbus Council #8980 conducts more than 60 charitable projects and activities each year whichpositively impact and improve the lives and well-being of adults, children and families within the St. MichaelParish Family and stretching outward across the any communities of Southeastern Horry County and NorthernGeorgetown County. Many of these charitable projects and activities of Knights of Columbus Council #8980 arefocused upon disadvantaged and needy adults, children, and families, increasing the self-reliance and dignity ofintellectually challenged adults and children, delivering food for hungry children, and providing warm wintercoats to needy children. To conduct these more than 60 charitable projects and activities each year and to fulfillthe growing needs within the St. Michael Parish Family and across the many communities of Southeastern HorryCounty and Northern Georgetown County requires larger and larger amounts of money raised throughfundraising. Knights of Columbus Council #8980 needs to identify and implement new fundraising opportunitiesand events to raise the increasing amounts of money needed.

A call for new ideas and suggestions for fundraising opportunities and events is going out to allBrother Knights of Council #8980, the largest Knights of Columbus Council in the State of SouthCarolina. The Knights of Council #8980 are very active in a wide variety of charitable groups andorganizations. Council #8980 is also very fortunate to have a very large number of Knights who havetransferred from Knights of Columbus Councils across the Nation. Many of the Knights whotransferred to Council #8980 have been Past Grand Knights from Councils across the Nation. Thiscall for new ideas and suggestions for fundraising opportunities and events can hopefully build

upon fundraising successes conducted by other Knights of Columbus Councils and other charitable groups andorganizations. The new ideas and suggestions just need a very brief description that includes the keys for successfor implementation by Council #8980. Please submit your ideas and suggestions for new fundraising opportunitiesand events for Council #8980 by email to Mike Weiler, Chancellor by December 15, 2016. Mike’s email addressis [email protected].

Mike is also forming a small committee of Brother Knights to review these new ideas and suggestions andprepare them for presentation to the Officers of Council #8980 and the full membership of Council #8980 asappropriate. This small committee will meet in early January 2017. Ken Pankowskiwill be joining Mike on this committee. Other Brother Knights interested in workingon this small committee should express their interest by email to Mike Weiler byDecember 15, 2016. New Knights who have joined Council #8980 within the last yearare particularly encouraged to participate on this small committee. New Knights cangain valid insights and information on the projects and activities of Council #8980 aswell as the opportunity to meet with and work with other Brother Knights.

ASSEMBLY 2107 OFFICERS 2016ASSEMBLY 2107 OFFICERS 2016

If you receive this after Thanksgiving, I hope you had a good and safe holiday. I also hope you ate more thanyou should have and then napped on the couch. If you receive this before Thanksgiving, read the above sentenceand follow it. Enjoy. Some of the happenings in the last few weeks.Yesterday, (Nov. 13) Fr. Edmund McCaffrey passed away while under the prayerful care of the Little Sisters ofthe Poor in Louisville KY. His funeral will be here at St. Michael, but the day and time have not been formalizedas of the time of this writing. You will be notified of the information when we receive it from Fr. Ed. This past

weekend Fr. Ed allowed us to solicit contributions for our Veterans Fund. I was able to address the congregation prior toeach Mass on Saturday and Sunday. It felt great to stand in front of our fellow parishioners and let them know who we areand what we do. When you write down what we do you really get a jolt because we do a lot and do it in the most part tohelp others. Our collection brought in almost $5800.00. We expect a few more contributions to come in from people whowere not able to donate last weekend. Thanks to all members who stepped up and joined in holding the collection bucketsafter Masses on Saturday and Sunday. A big thank you to Don Maher, he was there with me at all six Masses. On VeteransDay, the Honor Guard took part in the Veterans Day Celebration at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center. Our Flag foldingteam presented the ceremony at this celebration. Once again, I felt a real pride watching them go through the routine.

On Wednesday November 9 th we had a busy day. The Flag folding team did the ceremony at St. Andrew Church inMyrtle Beach for the student body of the St. Andrew Grade School. Another great job by the team. I just received a beautifulthank you card from the principal. At the same time 24 Knights were at Hill Crest Cemetery in Conway to place almost 2000American Flags on the graves of deceased Veterans. With that many Knights, the job was done quickly and excellently. Wewere assisted by members of the Conway High School ROTC. Our thanks are extended to them.We have the task on Wednesday Nov 16 th to go back to the Hill Crest Cemetery to pick up those same 2000 flags. Truthfully, picking up is much easier than placing them on the graves. Let’s thank Dominic Falcone for once again chairing this project. He will be contacting us to get together to go through the flags and sort out the ones that are frayed and tattered. Thenbundle them so we are ready to roll next May when we do this again for Memorial Day.

There will be a Fourth Degree Exemplification on Saturday February 17th in Columbia SC. We willhave another meeting for 3 rd Degree members who wish to advance to the 4th Degree. We have hadtwo information meetings and several members are thinking about taking part in February. If you wantto discuss this, please feel free to call me for information. I want to thank for your support andparticipation in the last month. We had some members come forth who have not been active for a while. Thanks to them. If you were not one of them, think about joining in the next time the request comesout. To you and your family, I extend to you and very MERRY CHRISTMAS and HAPPY NEW YEAR fromall your officers of the Assembly. PEACE

Fraternallyyours,Ken Hein
