We have had a great start to our second semester. We are encouraged by the hard work demonstrated by our students. Our Jacket Way program has recognized for the efforts of our students. We will continue to emphasize and highlight the three pillars of the program:

• Being Respectful• Being Responsible• Being Ready

There has been a positive energy in our building at the start of this year, strengthening our excitement in working with you as partners in your child’s education. As partners, we need to continually open the lines of communication. Please do not hesitate to contact us with your observations of our school. We realize that students may share with you items that we need to know to best serve them.

We will continue to exert extra effort in strengthening home-school communication. If you have specific questions, concerns or simply want to share your insights, please do not hesitate to contact our school. Our goal is to improve daily which can only happen with your support, confidence and wisdom.

CALLING ALL PARENTS, CALLING ALL PARENTS...JHPO WANTS YOU!!The Perrysburg Junior High Parents Organization (JHPO) is open to any adult involved in the life of a student at the school. We come together to support our children and their teachers through volunteering, raising money for special classroom and building purchases, promoting school spirit, and providing appreciation and affirmation for the teachers and staff. These opportunities to be involved are greatly appreciated by the students and staff alike. The parental involvement in our schools is what makes PJH a special place. Come on out and meet new people and truly have fun being a part of something special in the community, OUR KIDS.

H.I.P.P. PAINTS ENCOURAGEMENT!Perrysburg Junior High’s H.I.P.P. (High Impact Peer Program) students recently had a guest artist, Kerry Wellstein, from CREATE Art Studio and Workshop join us for our January meeting. One of the goals of H.I.P.P. is to promote our Jacket Way program, which includes being respectful, helping others and being a good leader. Our meeting focused on encouraging and inspiring words to help themselves and others have a great day. The students chose a word or phrase, and with Kerry’s instruction learned how to use acrylic paints to create their canvases, that will be displayed throughout the Junior High to provide encouragement to all.

Miss Derr, H.I.P.P. Advisor, states, “It was so neat to see the words the kids chose and then watch them create their canvases. Listening to them encourage each other while painting was amazing – that’s what great leaders do! I really appreciate CREATE Art Studio and Workshop for working with us to help promote a positive environment for our students.”

THE COUNSELOR’S CORNERThe first semester at PJH was awesome! The school counselors, along with our have been conducting various groups on: dealing with anger, divorce/separation, grief, coping skills and study skills. Groups help students to process their feelings in positive ways and let them know that they are not alone. Thank you to parents, guardians, teachers, and staff for allowing students to participate in these groups!

Important dates and events during second semester:Feb. 21, 22, 23: 8th grade students begin course registration. The high school counselors will be visiting 8th grade Social Studies classes to complete registration for freshman year. Feb. 24 will serve as a make-up day, in the event of a delay or cancellation.

March 1st: 8th grade Career Expo. The 8th grade will take a field trip to Penta Career Center to learn about various career options and potential career paths.

April 7th: Frosh Fest for 8th grade students. The 8th grade will travel to the high school for half of the day to participate in tours, play games, and learn about all of the activities offered at the high school.

FROM THE STACKS OF THE PJHS LIBRARY…Our students have access to many digital resources that are available for use at school and at home. We have over 300 eBooks of varying topics and genres available through our library catalog. Many of the eBook titles have a text-to-speech option and all titles have the capability to be downloaded to be read offline on smart devices using the free Destiny Discover app.

Looking for credible sources for research projects? Our students have access to more than 15 research databases from ProQuest and INFOhio to aid them in finding information for research projects. Students and parents can access these resources through the Schoology group, Library Media Resources.

WE’VE GOT THE POWER-- POWER OF THE PENThe PJH Power of the Pen team competed at Timberstone Junior High on Saturday, January 16th. Writers competed in three writing rounds where they were given a prompt, and then they had to compose a complete short story in only forty minutes. With twenty-four area schools in attendance, Perrysburg did well with Katelyn Maloney getting an honorable mention and Brianna Kraus receiving 11th place overall for 7th grade. The team is anxiously awaiting results, as writers scoring in the top fifty percent overall will move on to compete at the Lourdes College Regional Tournament on March 8, 2017.

The 2016-2017 Power of the Pen Team consists of:

STUDENT COUNCIL, SERVING OTHERSOur 6th, 7th and 8th grade student council members have been hard at work on community outreach projects and school fundraising opportunities. In November, they organized and staffed a PJH blood drive with an incredible turnout! In December, we sponsored an Operation Bread Basket food collection. We continue to have a school store every Wednesday to raise money for school functions. In the months to come, we will be selling Valentine’s, collecting money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society through a Pennies for Patients fundraiser, and hosting a school-wide art contest. We know that we can make a difference for someone.

NURSE’S NOTESFrom the Clinic….. Hand Washing/SanitizingWhile we are in cold/flu season, you might think it is a myth, but actually the most important thing you can do to avoid getting sick is to wash/sanitize your hands.If you don’t wash/sanitize your hands well and often, you can pick up germs from other sources and then infect yourself. You’re at risk every time you touch your eyes, nose, or mouth. Here at school we are constantly reinforcing these very important principles to help prevent the spread of germs:

• Frequent and effective hand washing ( at least 20 seconds with soap and water). Use hand sanitizer when soap and water are not available.

• Cough and sneeze in your elbow or sleeve. DO NOT cough or sneeze in your hands. If you do, wash hands or use sanitizer immediately.

• DO NOT touch the T-ZONE or even better yet, your face. The mucous membranes in the eyes, nose and mouth, are where germs enter the body.

We want to do all that we can to have a safe and healthy environment here at school. With everyone following these helpful tips we hope that we can accomplish that goal.

GET INVOLVED, THROUGH YOUTH TO YOUTHYouth to Youth is a club that promotes positive life decisions, especially encouraging kids to say no to drugs. We are gearing up for a great second half of the school year! We have just finished our Holiday party and are planning some fun events at Skyzone and a movie night at Levis Commons. We are also looking forward to some volunteer opportunities at local senior homes and donating items to charities. Youth to Youth is open to all 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. PERFORMING ARTSBAND of Brothers (and Sisters)PJH was informed by the District 1 President of the Ohio Music Education Association that the Perrysburg Junior High Band had 21 students accepted to the OMEA District 1 Honor Band. That puts us 1st out of the 32 schools which had students audition. It is also a record number of students accepted from our school! PJH Band makes up roughly 20% of this year’s honor band. This is quite an honor for our young “bandlings”, as they will represent our school and community during their performance at the Stranahan Theater!

To audition for this honors ensemble, students prepared two musical excerpts given out by OMEA and then recorded them at PJH. Once all of the recordings were made, we sent them to OMEA adjudicators. These adjudicators ranked the recordings from all of the schools, accepting the top players on each of the instruments.

Thank you for all you have done to make the PJH Bands the best in NW Ohio. We

appreciate your support in all areas of our program. This performance isn’t possible without all that you do for us - THANK YOU!

In- “CHOIR” -ing Minds, Want to Know The choir program has a busy couple of months ahead. The sixth graders are in the beginning stages of preparing for their performance of “Dig It” on March 9th at 7:00. While the seventh and eighth graders are preparing for their annual solo and ensemble event which will happen on March 14. Students will be preparing solos and group numbers to perform in front of highly qualified judges to receive a rating and feedback on their performance. In addition to these performances we have had five students selected for OMEA District One Honor’s Choir this year. The following students were selected from over 200 middle school students in District One: Colin DeVincent, Drew Dunphy, Andrea Martinez, Ethan Mullins, and Luke Williams. These students will perform at the Stranahan Theater on February 12th at 2:30 PM.

“Strings” NewsThe following students were chosen to represent Perrysburg in the 2017 OMEA District 1 Honors Orchestra. They will rehearse with the most talented string players in Northwest Ohio and give a concert at The Stranahan on Sunday, February 12th at 2:30 PM.Honors Orchestra:Quinn Baumgartner, Tony Chen, T.J. ATHLETIC AVENUEThe Perrysburg Junior High Athletic Department is in the midst of their 2016-2017 winter athletic seasons.

Currently, the boys 7th grade basketball team coached by Justin Fahncke is 15-1 on their season. The Jackets had a great run in the NLL Tournament finishing as league champs.

The 8th grade boys basketball team coached by Dave Perez sits at 12-4 on the season. The Jackets had a great run in the NLL Tournament finishing as league champs.

The 7th grade girls basketball team currently stands at 8-4 on the season. The Jackets are coached by Craig Krueger and will participate in their NLL Tournament beginning on March 2nd.

The 8th grade girls basketball team is coach by Tom Przybylski and has a record of 9-3 on the season thus far. They will compete in the NLL Tournament beginning on March 2nd.

The Jacket wrestling team concluded their regular season with a perfect 8-0 dual record. The Jackets also claimed a team championships at the Genoa Invitational and Northwood Invitational while placing as meet runners up at the Oak Harbor Invitational. The Jackets battled in the NLL Tournament on January 28th and finished as league team champions. Individual league champions included: Alex Garee, Cameron Huber, Ryan Musgrove, Quinten Ramey, Brennan Webb, Zane Weshke and Cade Zimmerly. The Jacket wrestling team was coached by Randy Musgrove.

The Jacket cheerleaders continue to build school spirit at all the home boys basketball games while decorating the school hallways with support. The Jackets are coached by Jennifer Krueger.

There will be an informational meeting for all 7th and 8th graders interested in participating in track and field this spring on Wednesday, February 15 at 7:00pm in the PJHS Auditorium. The official start date for track and field is March 6.
