THE BUXTON MONUMENT Bincleaves Green Weymouth, Dorset September 2016 - Deciding the position of the Monument and beginning the work Autumn 2016 - ‘Building the Monument’ 5TH JUNE 2017 THE MONUMENT AND INFORMATION BOARD COMPLETED AND DEDICATED Thomas Fowell Buxton, was MP for Weymouth 1818-1837. This monument was erected in 2017 to commemorate his achievements, in particular his role as leader of the anti- slavery group in Parliament, which resulted in the abolition of slavery in the British Empire in August 1833. The monument was designed by Peter Loizou, then a student at Weymouth College. The Stones were carved by students at the college Masonry Department. The funds for building the monument were raised by public subscription. A grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund enabled the design and installation of the Information Board which accompanies the monument.
