1 February, 2012 THE BULLETIN P.O. Box 29136, THUNDER BAY, Ontario, P7B 6P9 CANADA www.tbyc.on.ca Around the Club The yard…Things are quiet around the yard as usual for this time of year. However, the strong winds of the February 11 th – 12 th weekend did create some problems for the tarps on a few boats. You may want to visit the yard to check on your boat and its winter covering. Marina Advisory Committee (MAC)… Ray Innes, TBYC’s MAC representative reports that the City should be sending out 2012 contracts by the end of next week (Feb. 26 – Mar. 2). The deadline for paying for your slip is Monday, April 16 th . Other items of note from the last MAC meeting: There will be no docking fee increase at the Marina in 2012. Janice Cameron has resigned as the dry land boating/Temple Reef Sailing Club representative on the Committee. Thanks for your contributions Janice. Brian Cox, TRSC Commodore, is replacing Janice on the Committee. The City is currently looking into solutions to the security gates at the entrances to the docks. As designed and installed, the gates provide little to no security at this time. Marina contract holders will be given one parking pass for the 2012 season. Specific plans as to how parking will be managed within Marina Park are yet to be finalized. The City is also still working on a new fishing cleaning station for the Marina. It will be located in the southwest corner of the parking lot next to the public launch ramps. After a 2 year hiatus because of waterfront construction, the Marina will be returned to the successful, “enterprise model” of management in 2012. The model requires that the marina pays for itself, including sustaining a reserve fund for capital improvements. The next meeting of MAC is scheduled for March 21 st . If you have any questions or comments, please do not hesitate to contact Ray at [email protected].

    Around the Lake

PowerBoat TV on north shore of Lake Superior… PowerBoat TV is a weekly half-hour television show focusing on power boats and the boating lifestyle. Recently, PowerBoat TV aired a show which featured the north shore of Lake Superior. If you missed it, you can still view the episode on the show’s website. Simply click on the link to 2012 Episode 4 - North Shore of Lake Superior at http://www.powerboattv.com/view-content/42/2012-Episode-4-North-Shore-of-Lake-Superior.html. For the cruisers whose appeal of the north shore is the isolated passages and secluded anchorages, don’t worry. The video doesn’t give away too many of the “secrets” the cruising ground has to offer. PowerBoat Television can be seen across Canada on Global Television on Saturdays at 11:00 AM and Tuesdays at 8:00 PM on Fox Sports World.

A tall ship for Lake Superior… There is a new effort to build a tall ship for Lake Superior. The Lake Superior Tall Ships (LSTS) is planning to build a modern replica of a US Revenue Cutter that was based in Bayfield, WI on Lake Superior from 1859 to 1887. This vessel will be a gaff rigged schooner with a length on deck about 60', length overall about 80', 18' beam, and 6' draft with centerboard up. LSTS is looking for people who would be willing to serve as board members, as well as financial contributions. Check out their website at https://sites.google.com/site/lakesuperiortallships/ .

Things To Do When You Can’t Go Boating Seminars and webinars for the racing enthusiasts… Got an itch to go racing but the ice in the bay is slowing you down. You can get your head back into it by means of a seminar or two. While there is none scheduled for Thunder Bay this winter, NorthU has a seminar on “Racing Trim” scheduled for Duluth, MN on March 24, 2012. More details can be found at http://www.northu.northsails.com/Default.aspx . Not up to travelling to attend a seminar? Well you can also participate on line. This spring NorthU is also offering a series of webinars on “weather for sailors”, “racing trim” and “performance instruments”. Visit http://www.northu.northsails.com/tabid/31332/Default.aspx for details. Seminars and webinars for the cruising crowd… Great Lakes recreational boaters may now choose from over 30 online tutorials conducted by experienced Great Lakes Cruising Club accredited sail or power boating colleagues and specialists. Cruising Club membership is not required.

Live, on-screen presentations with visual aids provide an opportunity for participants to interact with the instructor and each other in a virtual classroom. Sessions typically run from 60 to 90 minutes, and only require a computer with speakers, web browser and a reasonable-speed internet connection.

This year's topics include introductions to several favourite Great Lakes cruising areas, navigation skills, negotiating locks, boat and engine maintenance, women's forum, energy management, fibreglass repair basics, weather, writing for the boating market, the Trent-Severn waterway, provisioning, cruising with pets, marine photography, and more. For further information and a list of subjects and instructors, go to http://www.glccschool.com/.

Upcoming sessions include “Cruising Lake Huron’s North Channel and Georgian Bay”, “Cruising Lake Superior’s Canadian Shore”, “Wilderness Cruising Lake Superior’s Isle Royale”, and “Cruising Lake Superior’s Apostle Islands”.

Boat shows… The boat show season is well underway and many of the major shows have already been held. The Thunder Bay Marine Dealers Boat Show will be on February 25th 10:00 AM until February 28th 04:00 PM at the Coliseum. For more information contact Norm at 622-5121. In Memoriam It is with great sadness and deep regret that we advise of the passing, over the past 2 months, of 2 friends of Thunder Bay Yacht Club. Paul Puurula, June 11th, 1976 – December 3, 2011. Paul, age 35 years, passed away on December 3, 2011. Paul was a fun loving, kind-hearted, gentle and hardworking man. His sense of humour and charisma are what drew people to him. Paul loved his family and was very proud of his Finnish heritage. He had a great passion for life and was interested in many things like snowboarding, skateboarding, swimming, surfing, sailing, traveling, riding his motorcycle, listening to music, playing the drums and jamming with friends. Paul was a member of the TBYC and owner of the Mirage 24 sloop, Ice Cream. Linda Roberta Gosselin, June 25th 1945 – January 23rd 2012. Linda passed away at the Orillia Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital on January 23, 2012 in her 67th year. Linda was a former member of the Thunder Bay Yacht Club joining during the amalgamation with Lakehead Sailing Club prior to the 1981 Canada Summer Games. Linda was a significant contributor to the development of racing in the region, in general, and to the racing program at TBYC, in particular. She was instrumental in upgrading race management at TBYC serving a Race Committee Chair for the sailing venue of the 1981 Canada Summer Games as well as a number of local, regional, national and international regattas. On behalf of the membership of Thunder Bay Yacht Club, the Executive expresses its deepest sympathies to the families and friends of Paul and Linda.
