PALM SUNDAY – Weekend 13/14 April Nguyet’s story

As we make the journey with Jesus this week, the readings call us to a revolution of the heart, to take seriously our vocation as disciples of Jesus and as Isaiah reminds us to be faithful to this call and "listen like a disciple." With this in mind, perhaps the best way to travel this last week is to do so in the com-pany of the children, women and men who are most marginalised and vulnerable to extreme poverty and injustice. This should be our focus for our prayers, fasting and almsgiving as Lent draws to a close. This week we hear the story of Nguyet who was featured in Project Compassion 2017. Nguyet and her family experienced isolation and exclusion largely based around her disability. Their lives changed when Nguyet's neighbour introduced her to the Caritas Australia supported program Capacity Building for Parent Associations supporting Children with Disabilities (CBPA). A new world opened up for her and she discovered her creativity and her capacity to reimagine her future. Many of us will remember Nguyet's coloured paper flowers and her dreams of selling these to improve the livelihood of her family. Now Nguyet is selling T-shirts, accessories and home-cooked refreshments made by her sister as well as helping her parents with their business selling building materials. Nguyet is giving life 100%. As we commemorate the death and resurrection of Jesus, we are also keenly aware of the humility of his life, and his refusal to remain silent in the face of the traditional attitudes and culture of rejection and exclusion experienced by the poor and marginalised - an unpopular practice then and now! Jesus' life epitomizes the cost of discipleship. This week more than any other, rams home the call and cost of discipleship. Like Isaiah we can say "The Lord has given us, a disciple's tongue. So that I may know how to reply to the wearied, he provides me with speech. Each morning he wakes me to hear, to listen like a disciple." Are we open to hearing the voice of our God who calls us to speak and listen like a disciple?

Living with a disability was challenging for Nguyet. Since featuring in Project Compassion 2017 Nguyet has successfully built her own business, a dream that has become a reality with the support of Caritas Australia. Nguyet has become independent, an important member of her community and has great hope for

her future.

Liturgy Thoughts 9 The Big One! Easter is by far the highest point of the Church’s year. We can easily think that the great liturgical celebrations of that long weekend are an expanded version of our usual celebration on the other Sundays of the year. In fact, that’s getting things back-to-front. The other Sundays are all “little Easters”. Easter is THE BIG ONE, the event on which our faith is based and the liturgical celebration echoed in all other liturgical celebrations. We take three days to engage in one big celebration. You may hear the Latin translation “Triduum” for “Three Days” used sometimes. The three days last from the early evening of Holy Thursday to the early evening of Easter Sunday. Lent finishes when the Triduum begins. Good Friday and Holy Saturday are sombre days but we know they will turn to joy. The fifty days of Easter feasting commence on Easter Sunday. There are three parts to the one celebration of the Triduum. On Holy Thursday evening we join in the Mass of the Lord’s Supper. On Good Friday afternoon we solemnly commemorate the Passion and Death of Our Lord. On the evening or night of Holy Saturday we, in the most joyful moment in the Church’s year, celebrate the Easter Vigil. The fact that we are engaged in a single three-part celebration can be detected by a sign, or rather by lack of a sign ... the sign of the cross! Mass always begins and ends with the sign of the cross, led by the priest. The sign of the cross when we begin the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday signals the start of the Triduum . It doesn’t occur again until the conclusion of the Eucharist at the Easter Vigil. On Thursday night and Friday afternoon, we depart in silence; we’re not finished, just having a break. Gerard Hore

CHAPEL GARDEN FOR HOLY THURSDAY

Once again we plan to create a garden in the Chapel for Holy Thursday night to create a space for quiet reflective prayer or meditation on the Blessed Eucharist in the tabernacle after Mass. If you have some potted plants that you are willing to loan to us, please contact the office on 4639 4688.

CHRISM MASS

The Chrism Mass will be celebrated at St Patrick’s Cathedral on Monday 15 April at 5.30pm. As a pastoral highpoint in the life of the Diocese, the celebration is greatly enhanced with representation from as many parishes as possible. Everyone is welcome to participate in celebrating the Mass of the Oils and to witness and support our Clergy as they renew their Priestly Promises.

The use of sacred oils in our Christian liturgy has been adopted from the Old Testament practice of anointing kings, priests and prophets, as they foreshadowed Christ, whose name means ‘the anointed one’. Throughout the year these oils are used to anoint those who are sick, baptised or confirmed. During the Chrism Mass the oils are brought forward and presented to the Bishop who will bless and consecrate them. In this way the Chrism Mass becomes one of the principal expressions of the fullness of the Bishop’s Priesthood.

STATIONS OF THE CROSS Date: Good Friday, 19/4/19 Time: 7:30am Location: Star ting at St Patr ick's Cathedral The Social Justice Commission welcome all to join this prayerful 4km walk from the Cathedral steps throughout the Toowoomba CBD. Participants will reflect on and pray the traditional Stations of the Cross at sites of significance. Issues reflected upon will include mental health, the death penalty, refugees, Australia's First Peoples, domestic violence and the destruction of the environment. PLENARY COUNCIL 2020 UPDATE

Plenary Council 2020 president Archbishop Timothy Costelloe SDB of Perth says he and his fellow bishops have been “amazed” by the engagement of people across Australia in the Council’s opening stage. The National Centre for Pastoral Research has compiled statistical data and reported that more than 222,000 people participated in the Listening and Dialogue phase and made either individual submissions or had their voices captured through a group response. “The bishops knew the time was ripe for a defining moment in the life of the Church like a Plenary Council. What we didn’t know is how the people of Australia would embrace a process that hasn’t taken place for more than 80 years,” Archbishop Costelloe. “We have been thrilled and amazed ....”
