Spring Conclave is Near! By Thomas Weiss and Tom DeCanio, Spring Conclave ‘17 Chairmen
Ready for the hippest, hottest, most poppin’ event of the
year? Spring Conclave is right around the corner, and will
be held March 10 - 12, 2017 at Sand Hill Scout Reservation. This weekend offers opportunities for
fellowship, Ordeal and Brotherhood ceremonies, as well
as, the Vigil Callout. You can find more details about signing
up online at the council website.
Our theme for this fun filled weekend is Star Wars! Just like
the photo to the left, you can expect some epic light saber
duels and Star Wars games to be scattered throughout the
weekend. We would love to see each of you at the event! Interested? Check out the
event online and don’t forget to sign-up, today!
Winter Conclave is Over! By Michael Valenti, Winter Conclave ‘17 Chairman
Many thanks to everyone who helped me make
the Winter Conclave a huge success. Over 130
Arrowmen came out to Flaming Arrow Scout
Reservation and provided cheerful service to our
camp. After a day of selfless devotion, we
celebrated the day
with the induction
of 36 new brothers
and witnessed 7 members who sealed their membership
with the Brotherhood ceremony. The conclave was also our first
opportunity to distribute our first, “charter member” lodge flap.
It was an honor to work with all the Scouts and Scouters who attended the weekend
and I look forward to seeing you all at Sand Hill Scout Reservation for the Spring
Conclave (March 10 -12) and the work weekends (February 18 and March 18).

Good things are
happening in Uh-Tō-
Yeh-Hut-Tee Lodge
as we kick off our
charter year. I’m
pleased to share with
you that our Winter
Conclave at Flaming
Arrow Scout
Reservation had our
first Ordeal class
consisting of 36 new brothers. In addition, we had our first
Brotherhood class with Arrowmen who have sealed their
membership in the Order of the Arrow and our lodge. I
offer a most sincere congratulations to both of these
groups. Another great milestone of the weekend was the
introduction of our “Charter” flap, which is the first flap for
the lodge! For those of you that couldn’t make the
weekend, we will have the flaps available for $5 each at the
Spring Conclave. I strongly encourage everyone to get a
new flap and help us unite under the symbolism of Uh-Tō-
Yeh-Hut-Tee.
As a reminder, we hold our Lodge Executive Committee
(LEC) meetings the third Thursday of each month. LEC
members are obligated to attend the LEC meetings,
however, any who is interested in how the lodge operates
can also attend. We have a good turnout out at most of
these meetings, although chapter membership has been on
the decline. We know that distance can be a concern, and
are continuing to look for ways to address this, but hope
that you will get involved to help us find a solution.
Contact your chapter chief or adviser to find out how you
can be active and support the lodge. Your involvement will
help the lodge immensely, and we can always find a spot
for you to provide cheerful service.
I can say with conviction that I’ve enjoyed every experience
I’ve had in service to the development of our lodge. It’s not
my lodge, but belongs to everyone of us in brotherhood
and I’m proud of what we are building. If your dues are
paid, you are and always will be a charter member of our
lodge – something to be proud of. The past is but a
memory, and the future is ours, so please join me in
cheerful service and follow the trail of the straightest arrow
of our Order.
Elections During Spring
Conclave by Ken Knaebel, Lodge Adviser
The Order of the Arrow offers young men opportunities
to develop leadership skills that are not offered at the
troop or crew level. Uh-Tō-Yeh-Hut-Tee Lodge
membership is massive, with only one man elected to lead
and serve them. That man could be you! I challenge you to
consider running for a lodge or chapter office. We need
qualified and motivated young men to help Uh-Tō-Yeh-
Hut-Tee meet its obligations to Greater Tampa Bay Area
Council. I will also caution you that these leadership
opportunities are not something you should desire as an
award or recognition. These leadership opportunities
represent a challenge to you to truly serve your fellow
Scouts. Please read through the information about running
for an elected office on page 5. You will notice that you
must discuss your abilities and goals with the adult adviser
who would help guide you on your path.
A Mark of Distinction
The Vigil Honor By Will Mastrangeli
At the Spring Conclave, the lodge will
recognize some of our Arrowmen with the
Vigil Honor - the highest honor that the lodge
can bestow. But, what exactly is it?
The Vigil Honor was first awarded in 1915,
which was the same year that the Order of
the Arrow (OA) was founded. Towards the
end of that first summer on Treasure Island,
they decided that individuals should be
recognized for their devotion to the camp and
they formed a committee to decide who
would receive what was then known as the
“Second Degree.” That first committee
included co-founder Carroll A. Edson, among
others, and they decided that the most fitting
person to receive this honor was Dr. E. Urner
Goodman, the founder of the OA. While
honored, Dr. Goodman initially regretted that
a youth was not chosen. (Cont’d Page 3)

Today, the Vigil Honor is presented to Arrowmen who
have given extraordinary cheerful service to the Order,
Scout camps, or the Scouting community at large. The Vigil
Honor cannot be won or earned, but instead it is given to
an Arrowman by his fellows; it is a mark of distinction for
their alertness to the needs of others. Honorees are
selected by a committee and must have served as
Brotherhood members for at least two years in order to
receive the honor.
We will continue the cherished tradition of that first OA
summer by recognizing a select few of our brothers with
the Vigil Honor at the upcoming Spring Conclave during
Friday night’s special Call-Out ceremony. Many of the
traditions from our predecessor lodges are will be
continued, though a new tradition in the Uh-Tò-Yeh-Hut-
Tee Lodge is that Vigil names will use the Muskogee
language spoken by the Seminole people. A list of past
recipients of the Vigil Honor in our predecessor lodges is
available on the lodge website.
A Successful SLS By Thomas DeCanio
The beginning of November held a weekend full of training,
leadership, and a bit of competitive sports too! Our lodge
chiefs met up with the other
chiefs across Section S-4 for
business meetings, while the
rest of the lodge learned how
to bring back skills to make
the program even better.
After the events, Arrowmen
enjoyed fun games like foam
jousting, Frisbee, and soccer. You can find these photos on
page 6 and on the Lodge website. This November, Uh-Tō-
Yeh-Hut-Tee Lodge will be hosting SLS and help spread
knowledge and ideas to lodges and members across
Florida!
Work Days! by Adam Ekblad, Section Conference 2k17 Chairman
What event is even bigger than Spring Conclave? And
more fun? Section Conference!
This April, our Lodge will be hosting Section Conference at
Sand Hill Scout Reservation, however, we need your help
to get the camp ready for the hundreds of Arrowmen
camping there. To prepare for this
great event, we will be holding a
work day on February 18th and
March 18th starting at 8:00am.
Please sign up online at the
council website. Lunch will be
provided - we just need your
helping hands!
Busy those days? That’s fine too!
We would love to have you out at the
conference from April 21 – 23, 2017. Pre-order forms are
available online to satisfy all your patch needs, not to
mention a snazzy belt buckle, too.
Hope you join us on “A Pattern For A Journey”.
Our First Newsletter! by Thomas DeCanio, Historian
Welcome to the lodge’s first
newsletter! Issued quarterly, The
Bulletin is designed to keep
members informed about lodge
events and happenings. As you
thumb through, you’ll notice
there’s a page for photos, a page
for dates, and a page for
chapters as well. We strive to
put out interesting content for
our readers to enjoy.
Please note that only the first
issue of The Bulletin will be
printed and sent to you. If you wish to keep receiving a
copy through the snail mail, please see page 4. Thank you
for opening up our issue, and happy reading!
Chapter Lightning Round
Pèthakhuwe ············································ Meetings are held on the 3rd Sunday of the month starting 1:00pm at First United Methodist Church.
Pethakhuwe Chapter is pleased to report that we have
completed several elections in the past two months, one
with a troop that we hadn’t heard from in quite some time.
There are several more elections already scheduled for
after the first of the year. We had a representative speak at
the November Timucua District roundtable and have
stirred interest in adding elections in other troops.

Legacy Lodges By Will Mastrangeli
The term “Legacy Lodge” has been used a lot lately.
People use it to refer to the Seminole and Timuquan
Lodges. But what does it mean? The Oxford Dictionary
defines legacy as:
Noun - An amount of money or property left to
someone in a will; a thing handed down by a
predecessor as in "the legacy of centuries of neglect."
Adjective - Computing, denoting software or
hardware that has been superseded, but is difficult to
replace because of its wide use.
With that in mind, legacy can mean a couple of things. In
the first definition, it talks about an inheritance, a gift. In the
second definition, it is a technical term, but refers to
hardware or software that has been superseded by
something greater. In that example, people will not use
the new product because they don’t want to change.
We have the ability to choose our legacy – we can choose
to see Uh-Tò-Yeh-Hut-Tee Lodge as the “Legacy Lodge,”
a treasured inheritance. The product of two lodges
working separately for decades, and unknowingly moving
towards each other to create a gift for the future.
Alternatively, we can refer to Timuquan and Seminole
Lodges as something that has been superseded by
something greater than the two parts, but is not used
because people choose not to accept the gift.
I don’t know about you, but I know which legacy definition
I prefer. The history of our predecessor lodges cannot be
forgotten. It must be treasured and preserved and contains
our foundation. Through it, we realize our strengths, and
we can understand how to avoid our weaknesses. On the
flip-side to not accept the new lodge is to disrespect what
came before. It is to deny their gift to us. Together we can
bridge the gap created by the merge, and move forward to
peaks that our individual lodges couldn’t reach.
Instructions for Elected
Lodge Candidates
If you are thinking about running for an elected office, keep
in mind the following requirements:
You must be a member in good standing of Uh-To-Yeh-
Hut-Tee Lodge, including current registration in a unit, up-
to-date on lodge dues, and have attended lodge events on
a regular basis.
Lodge Chief, Lodge Operations Vice-Chief, and Lodge
Membership Vice Chief - You must provide a letter that
you and your family will support the extra efforts and time
required to fulfill these obligations. Prior to the election,
you must speak with the lodge adviser and staff adviser and
have their permission to seek office. The reason for this is
to identify those who are truly able and highly motivated to
provide leadership in service to others.
Lodge Secretary, Lodge Treasurer, and Lodge Historian -
You must speak with the current advisers for these
positions, or the lodge adviser in their absence, before
being permitted to run. Be prepared to discuss the age
requirements and your ability to carry out the
responsibilities of these offices.
Service to others is the watchword of our Order. Elected
positions should not be sought for personal recognition or
for the purpose of improving resumes or college
applications. Rather, you should seek to serve your
Brothers from a sense of dedication and a desire to make
Uh-To-Yeh-Hut-Tee Lodge, Greater Tampa Bay Area
Council, and our communities better and stronger.

So What Does it Mean?
Did you know that Uh-Tò-Yeh-Hut-Tee is
the Muskogee word for lightning? It was chosen
by the Lodge Executive Board to represent the
impact of lightning in the Tampa Bay area.
