WELCOME TO THE BULL NET PASTURE, 3928 KHz

This is the Bull Net’s monthly newsletter, issued October-April. This

newsletter is for the reading enjoyment of all interested amateur radio

operators.

In this month’s issue: Happenings: Pages 1 - 4

Thoughts: Pages 5 and 6

17: Page 7

The Bull Sheet: Pages 8 – 16

Happenings: How to become a Bull Net Member (BNM).

As of this issue we have 159 BNM. If you are asked by a fellow ARO about how

to join the Bull Net, this is how it’s done. We ask that all prospective members

check in to the net three times during a yearly session. The frequency is 3928

Khz. This year’s session started September 1, 2017 and will end on April 19, 2018.

After the required check in, the ARO may request membership or any BNM may

nominate the ARO for membership. The three voting members will conduct a

membership vote and provide the results of that vote to the prospective ARO and

the nominating BNM when applicable. Contact any one of the three voting

members to request membership: N1RPH, N1UB or WS1D. Email is the preferred

method, addresses are on the web site. We do not discuss membership on 3928

Khz.

This is a have fun net, we welcome new stations, the net is not controlled, we

discourage disrespect for others, we also enjoy a friendly stomping, after all, this

is The Bull Net. Check in a few times, you will see how the Bull Net operates. You

just might enjoy running with the BNM.

Happenings Two: Bull Net Mail As we begin a new Bull Net session, it is recommended that all members look at

their respective home address if you moved, your email status and your email

address. Are changes needed? If so, contact [email protected]. Please provide your

call sign to avoid confusion.

Happenings Three: The Bull Net Marathon 2017

The Bull Net Marathon 2017 (TBNM17) as it is called, was started January 1, 2017

@ 05:01Z and ends on November 30, 2017 @ 05:00Z. December will be used to

compile all the results and show how we all did. I’ll ask you for your results on

November 30, 2017. Your total should only include only number of countries

worked, no zones or any other information. The overall results will be in the

December Bull Horn and the BNM winner of TBNM17 will be announced.

Even if you did not do a whole lot, it will be fun to see how we all do. Some work

real hard at working dx, others just plod along and enjoy the contacts, it really

doesn’t matter how you do it or how hard you worked. So, if you’re like me and did

very little DX hunting this year, don’t feel like you’re alone. The next marathon,

TBNM18 will start January 1, 2018. I’ll be working on TBNM18 to rid myself of

the projected dunce cap that I have earned in TBNM17.

Happenings Four: PC 101917.

The first 2017-2018 October pasture call BNM check in count was 50 and 3 non

members for a total of 53. The non-member stations were, KA1DTA, Dave,

Taunton, Ma. KB1YJ, Bill, Stratham, NH, Now BNM # 174 and K1BQT, Rick,

Barrington, NH.

Thanks to all who stopped by. I hope we see more new stations dropping in to say

hello.--See the Bull sheet for the BNM who stopped by.

Things sometime get a little crazy when working with pencil and paper, so I hope I

didn’t miss any one.

A special thanks:

I would like to thank Larry, KB1OWO for his bird hunting seat belt modification.

Not one time did I get held in the seat when attempting to exit. I would highly

recommend that this mod only be used while hunting on the dirt roads at very,

very slow speeds. The officer that stopped us told me the mod was not legal on

Maine highways. I was fully prepared and without a request, gave the officer

Larry’s full name, address, DOB, social security number, auto license plate number.

I even went so far to get the names of Larry’s cat and dog. It wouldn’t be nice for

the officer to take care of the wrong Larry. The officer seemed please that I had

taken the time to provide all this information and said he would take care of

Larry. Yes, that was real nice of him The officer also stated that the mod was so

well thought out that there would not be a need to obtain a warrant. It was a win,

win for sure. I felt that Larry deserved something and it all worked out so nicely.

PC 101917 continued.

I would also like to thank Mick, N1RPH and Sue, call sign NEVER, for

having me up to camp and the wonderful hospitality. Always a fun time with

many laughs. Plus, Mick’s rig always needs a tune up. Glad to help OM.

Tom, W1NOV told me he never heard that rig sound so good.

show intelligence, it is to keep the mind working. If you don’t use it, you

might lose it. The mind is a terrible thing to waste.

The next Pasture Call is Thursday, November 16, 2017 starting at or about

16:00 EST. Be on the look out for the Pasture Call Alert (PCA).

The PC schedule is also on the web site.

Thoughts: SKCC Report

Some of you may have interest in the Straight Key Century Club. The membership

count has reached 17,719 as of 10/27/2017. If you like CW or want to learn CW,

the SKCC can get you started, it works for the beginner to expert and cost

nothing to join. Check it out at http://www.skccgroup.com/

The US Navy is once again using Morse Code with a signal light as they once did

many years ago. This time they are using a keyboard to activate the light but the

person receiving must know Morse code.

Knowing and using Morse Code is an art, it is also a lot of fun. Is it time you

learned Morse Telegraphy, Morse Code, what we Hams refer to as CW?

(Continuous Wave), messages sent by On-Off Keying, (OOK) also known as

Amplitude-Shift Keying (ASK). See the ARRL handbook for more information or as

my Grandsons are always saying, “Google it Grandpa”.

K1NMF, Den, aka (Chichester); Found this on N4DSP QRZ.COM page and thought

he would pass it along. He said he has seen it before but what the heck he liked it.

So did I, maybe you might too.

An Ode To CW

And sideband not invented,

Words were passed by pounding brass,

And all were quite contented."

Thoughts Two: The Visiting Aliens

An alien spaceship hovered over a golf course. Two aliens were watching a solitary

golfer practicing on a golf course. This was a new golfer and they watched in

amazement.

The golfer duffed his tee shot, shanked his second into the rough, took three to

get out of the rough into the fairway, sliced the next shot into the bushes, took a

putter to get it out on the fairway again. He then hit a great shot into a bunker by

the green, took several shots to get out of the bunker and finally on to the green.

Meanwhile, one alien told the other that he must be playing some sort of game and

they continued to watch. The golfer then putted several times until he finally got

the ball into the hole. At this stage, the other alien told his partner, “Wow, now

he is in serious trouble”. https://eldergolfer.com

That adds up to be a 15 on a par 4, give or take a stroke.

Lately there has been much speculation has taken place on just who the aliens

were watching.

Here is a list of golfers who were known to have been on that golf course that

day.

This a very difficult choice, but, if you put your mind to it, I’m sure you will do

just fine.

17:

Compliments of Chichester, K1NMF. (He was busy this summer)

A friend of mine who shall remain nameless, recently picked a new primary

care doctor. After two visits and exhaustive Lab tests, she said he was doing

fairly well for his age. (He is well past Seventy).

A little concerned about that comment, he couldn't resist asking her, 'Do you

think I'll live to be 85?'

She asked, 'Do you smoke tobacco, or drink beer, wine or hard liquor?'

Oh no,' he replied. 'I'm not doing drugs, either!'

Then she asked, 'Do you eat rib-eye steaks and barbecued ribs?'

He said, 'Not much... My former doctor said that all red meat is very

unhealthy!'

Do you spend a lot of time in the sun, like playing golf, boating, sailing,

hiking, or bicycling?'

No, I don't,' he said.

She asked, 'Do you gamble, drive fast cars, or have a lot of sex?'

'No,' he said...

She looked at him and said, 'Then, why do you even care?

Instead of a sign that reads “Do Not Disturb”, I need one that reads,”

Already disturbed, proceed with caution” (Aunty Acid)

Some days the supply of available swear words is insufficient to meet my

demands. (Aunty Acid)
