Canadian Identity 1914• Never participated in any

• Very little Canadian identity in 1914 – no flag, no anthem, little independence

• 6 out of every 10 soldier who enlists is British born.

• Canada goes to war because Britain goes to war.

Canada’s Military• Canada has had no

opportunity to prove its military prowess.

• Therefore, Canadian units are divided and placed in and amongst other more reputable Allied units.

• Battles at Ypres and Somme create confidence in Canadians ability to fight bravely and with success.

Vimy Ridge

• Arthur Currie – first Canadian General

• Played it smart – ran mock attacks, did reconnaissance , built tunnels, created creeping barrage.

• Took Canadians only 4 days to take over Vimy – a success that had alluded others for years.

• First TOTAL Canadian victory.
