What is Residential Low Voltage Wiring New home low voltage wiring is typically thought of as TV and Telephone wiring. There is so much more to it, and it changes every day. Your key categories of low voltage wiring are:

• Structured Wiring (TV, Telephone, and Data) • Security • Flat Panel TVs and Projector Prewires • Audio (Surround Sound and Multi-Room Audio) • Intercom and Cameras • Central Vacuum • Home Automation and Energy Management

Structured Wiring has come a long way from the TV and Telephone wiring pulled in new homes 10 years ago. Now, a “smart panel” or structured wiring panel is a requirement. Most of your low voltage wiring will “homerun” to the panel. The panel serves as a centralized distribution point for phone, video, and data wiring and signals. Phone and Data outlets are wired with Cat5e wiring and color coded RJ45 outlets. At the panel, they are terminated with RJ45 connectors and are plugged into either the phone distribution module or your Internet router or network switch. TV outlets are wired with RG6 quad-shielded wiring which supports all current cable and satellite services. We install wired security systems by Honeywell. They will give you and your peace of mind that your family is protected. With environmental sensors, your house and your valuables will also be protected. You can be alerted to water leaks or flooding as well as extreme temperature situations. Your system offers a lot of functionality with add-on sensors and communication services. Your system will be monitored 24-hours a day by trained professionals with the required monitoring service. Do you want to hang your flat-panel TV on the wall and conceal all of the wiring? Whether you want the TV right above a piece of furniture, or above the fireplace, we have three options for Flat-Panel Prewires that will meet your needs. Our Flat-Panel Prewire options include a recessed electrical outlet at the TV location, or you can purchase a Flat-Panel Remote Power option that will provide a special outlet and wire that will allow you to connect your TV to a surge protector. Do you have a projector? We also offer a Projector Prewire option that includes an electrical outlet in the ceiling. We offer several options for surround sound and multi-room audio. If you have your own speakers, we offer several prewire options. Our Surround Sound Speaker Packages include in-wall or in-ceiling speakers that can be painted so that the speakers virtually disappear. Rear speaker packages as well as a subwoofer prewire allow you to customize your room to meet your specific needs. We offer in-ceiling and exterior, surface-mounted speaker packages for whole house audio. Our stand-alone packages are designed to be integrated with your audio equipment you currently own or are about to purchase. The OnQ LryiQ packages are multi-room amplified audio systems. When you move in, just connect an audio source such as a CD Player, IPod Dock, or other source to the LyriQ Audio Input plate with RCA cables and you have a multi-room audio system. The OnQ Selective Call System is a very advanced, full-featured intercom system. This system allows for private room-to-room paging as well as whole-house pages. Pressing the Do-Not-Disturb button

4

prevents pages from interrupting you during an important conference call or while you are sleeping. The monitor function allows you to listen to a baby or toddler’s room, much like a baby monitor. Adding one or more Unity Touchscreens and cameras, allows you to check in on a child’s room or see who is at the front door. The Unity module also adds basic home automation. See below for more information about the Unity Home System’s capabilities and features. We also install central vacuum systems. Please contact a Buhl Electric Sales Representative for a custom-built system for your size house and number of inlets. We offer VacPan inlets, full accessory kits with 30-foot hose, and garage accessory kits. We offer several solutions for Home Automation Systems. One solution is the security system-based Honeywell Tuxedo system that integrates your security system with wireless cameras and automation devices such as light switches, thermostats, and door locks. Another solution is the OnQ Unity Home System that integrates multi-room audio, intercom, lighting control, temperature control, and camera monitoring. Soon, we will be offering complete, robust Home Automation with the Control4 systems. Control4 systems scale from simple one-room solutions to very complex systems. They integrate multi-room audio and video distribution systems, security, thermostats, lighting, and motorized window treatments. Home Automation systems are very customized to the customer and their needs and habits, please contact a Buhl Electric Sales Representative to discuss the many options and solutions offered by a custom-built Home Automation System.

Data Outlet Description: This is a standard computer or data outlet. It is a RJ45 receptacle (blue) with Cat5e wiring homerun to panel. It supports 10/100BaseT, Gigabit, and Power Over Ethernet (POE). Recommended Upgrades: Router Prewire option, 8-port Network Switch Module, Cat6 Data Outlet. Notes: Wired Data Outlets are recommended over using wireless networking for streaming video due to the high-bandwidth required to stream video. Wireless networking latency can result in longer delays to begin streaming of video.

Router Prewire Outlet Description: This outlet allows you to place your wireless router in a more centralized location in your house for the best wireless coverage. It is a F-type coax connector with RG6 Quad-shielded wiring homerun to panel that will be used to carry the service provider’s signal to your wireless router. It also has a RJ45 receptacle (blue) with Cat5e wiring homerun to panel to carry the network signal to a network switch in the panel that feeds all of your Data Outlets in the house. It supports 10/100BaseT, Gigabit, and Power Over Ethernet (POE). Recommended Upgrades: 8-port Network Switch Module Notes: Should be placed under an office desk or in a unobtrusive place with an electrical outlet.

Cat6 Data Outlet Description: This is an upgraded computer or data outlet. It is a RJ45 receptacle (blue) with Cat6 wiring homerun to panel. It supports 10/100BaseT, Gigabit, and Power Over Ethernet (POE). Recommended Upgrades: Router Prewire option. To obtain the full benefits of Cat6’s bandwidth, all networking hardware and the sending and receiving devices must support Cat6 bandwidth.

Television Outlet Description: F-type coax connector with RG6 Quad-shielded wiring homerun to panel. Supports all current cable and satellite services. Recommended Upgrades: Add Data Outlet or change to Multimedia Outlet for Smart TVs and Satellite boxes, one of the Flat-Panel Prewire options.
