It is well known that the third chief-abbot of the Japanese Tendai Sect, Jikakudaishi Ennin, went
over to the Tang Changan in search of the Buddhist law, gained some Buddhist scriptures which
include the famous three inventories, and brought back them to Japan. These inventories are
Nihonkoku jwagonen nittguh mokuroku, Jikakudaishi zait sshinroku, and Nitt singu
sygy mokuroku. This study reconsiders the process and background of his activities of collecting
Buddhist scriptures in China, which have not yet been well studied until today. The author pays
attention to Ennins diary (Nitt guhjunreikki), his record of itinerary in the continent. First, I
reconfirm the contents of those inventories. Second I elaborately compare them with the descriptions
in his diary. And it will become obvious that Ennin received a series of Esoteric Buddhist teachings
from 838 to 845 before he was given many books. Ennins diary tells us the details of his activities
of collecting scriptures as follows.
Ennin was given the teachings of Buddhist kongkai (vajradhtu) and some books about kongkai
by Gensei (Xuanzheng) of Daxingshan-si Temple in 840. Next year, he received the kanj ceremony
of taizkai (garbhadhtu) and soshitsuji (susiddhikara), and also got some books on the
above-mentioned two worlds from Gishin (Yizhen) of Qinglong-si Temple. In the following year, he
received the kanj ceremony of taizkai and acquired some other books from Hassen (Faquan) of
Xuanfa-si Temple. He also learned shittan (Sanskrit) and got the 83 books about Sanskrit from
Genkan (Yuanjian) and Hgetsu (Baoyue). Finally, in addition to these views, the author described a
genealogical chart of taizkai and kongkai.
