    “The Way of the Cross”

How easy it would be to stay on the path if Jesus had only called his dis-

ciples to the way of self-indulgence! Our own desires would be happy with

self-indulgence. Most of the advertising we see encourages us to walk that

way too. Eat what will taste good! Buy the clothes that will make you look

and feel good, etc. Jesus, however, walked the way of the cross, the way of

self denial. He calls his disciples to follow in his wake. After teaching the dis-

ciples that he must suffer, be rejected by the Jewish leaders, be killed, and

rise on the third day, he tells them,

If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their

cross and follow me. For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose

their life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel, will save it. For what will it profit

them to gain the whole world and forfeit their life?”

    Mark 8:34b-36, NRSV

This year, the entire month of March falls within the forty days of Lent.

Just as Jesus set himself to go to Jerusalem to die upon the cross, during

Lent, many Christians focus on repentance and self-denial to prepare for the

events of Holy Week and Easter Sunday. We have an opportunity to step

away from the way of the world and its desires this month, and to focus up-

on Jesus and his suffering instead. In what ways will we deny ourselves?

What will it look like for us to take up our cross and follow him? We do not

practice self-denial for its own sake. Rather, we engage in it so that we may

better serve our Lord. As Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 5:15, “And he died for

all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them

and was raised again. “ (NIV)

    CHILDREN’S DAY! Sunday, March 22nd

The Children will be leading worship

    No 8:15am Service

    Dear Christ United Methodist Church,

As we are going into Lent I am

super excited. As our youth ministry

continues to grow, we are also

    starting the beginning stages for

renovations to our youth space. We

have a great group of individuals who

are dreaming and planning to make a

great worship and meeting space for

our youth. It's just more signs of the

fruit of God's Kingdom here in

    our community.

When I think of fruit in the light of

Lent though, I think of what truly

yields the best fruit. It's not just plants

that grow, but it's also plants that are

    pruned. Jesus said, "I am the vine;

    you are the branches." Vineyards

    don't just continuously grow and

    produce superior fruit. Without being

    pruned in between harvests,

vineyards and plants run the risk

of growing wildly in a way that

    they produce a lower quality

    harvest that next season. We

    are celebrating the harvest we

have had so far, but also asking

not to be left out of being pruned

    by God either.

    Come and join the combined

    choirs of Ironville UMC and

Christ UMC as we present the

    Easter Cantata “Is He Worthy”

    on March 29th at 10:45am.

    Easter is a season of

    remembrance, reflection, and

    rejoicing. We ponder the

sacrifice of Jesus on the cross,

we praise God for the miracle of

    the resurrection, and we

    prepare our hearts for his

    promised return.

With a blend of traditional hymns, classic and contemporary

songs, and a special moment retelling the crucifixion story called

“Journey to the Cross”, the choir will boldly proclaim Jesus is

worthy of all blessing, honor, and glory.

After months of meetings, various quotes from vendors

and prayerful consideration, the Governing Board is excited to

announce the approval of two new projects at Christ Church.

The time has arrived for our sanctuary to receive a

needed replacement to our outdated sound system.

Partnering with StageMasters, all ministries within the church

will benefit from the changes to the sound board, speakers,

microphones, instrument hookups and more. We pray that this

excites and encourages you to partner with us prayerfully and

financially to complete this long overdue need.

We are also excited to announce that a decision has

been made to pursue building a new parsonage on our

property closest to Yorkana. After months and countless hours

of pursuing bids on renovations to our existing parsonage, it is

obvious that building a new parsonage on our land for our

current and future pastoral family is the best solution. Stay

tuned for additional info to come in the near future as the

Parsonage Committee and Governing Board continue to

    complete details regarding this project.

Funding plans and strategies were also discussed and

approved for both. Endowment fund monies from

memorials, general checking and the Sandy Smith Music Fund

were approved to be used for the Sanctuary Sound Upgrade.

The Parsonage Build project will be using funds from the

Capital Improvement Reserve Fund, the Parsonage Fund and

a bank loan. Through your past generous giving, funds exist

today that allow us to execute these projects and we

encourage all to partner with us in prayer as we embark into a

deeper relationship of faith and trust. We also challenge those

that may feel the call to provide additional financial support to

these projects. May each of you get to experience God in a

powerful way during these exciting times at Christ Church.

Please do not hesitate to contact Pastor Jason, myself

or another Governing Board member if you wish to discuss

    further.
