Lesson 1: Hungry, Hungry Bruins Concept/Topic to Teach: Puck Handling, Defense Standards Addressed: See your state standards General Goal(s) – Students continue to develop puck handling and defensive skills. Specific Objectives:

• Students will work on keeping control of their own puck while using both sides of the stick and avoiding the defenders.

• The defensive players will work on stealing or knocking away the opponents puck.

Required Materials: • 1 stick and 1 puck for each student.

Introduction:

• Students start activity on one end line, with each student holding a stick and puck at their feet. • One Student is selected to be the defender, and they start in the middle without a puck. When the

defender in the middle says “Let’s Go Bruins!”, all the students on the end line attempt to make it across the gym without the defender taking, or knocking, their puck out of the court.

• If the defender knocks out a student’s puck, that student becomes an additional defender. The game continues until all students have been caught.

• The winner of the game becomes the new defender for the next game.

Modeling/Explanation: • Proper puck handling and defensive skills should be pre-taught. • Students need to be reminded to keep their stick below their waist at all times. • Any student that shoots their puck the length of the court will knock himself, or herself, out and

become a defender.

Independent Practice: Teacher supervises game. Differentiated Instruction: Adaptations (For Students with Learning/Physical Disabilities):

• Students may use a larger ball instead of puck. • Students may have a safe zone, where they can only be knocked out during a smaller portion of

the court.

Lesson 2: Hat Trick Challenge Concept/Topic to Teach: Shooting Standards Addressed: See your state standards General Goal(s) – Students continue to develop shooting skills. Specific Objectives: Students will work on their shooting skills from varying distances and angles. Required Materials:

• 1 stick for each student • 3 pucks for each group • 1 goal for each group (cones can be used) • Floor Tape to mark shooting spots

Introduction: • Each student starts the activity by choosing the correct (right or left) stick. • Class is then divided into 4 groups and lines up behind one of the four cones located in line with

the goal. • Each member of the team will take 3 shots on the goal from each shooting spot.

o Shooting spots should be marked with tape at varying distances depending on grade and ability level of students.

• The objective of the activity is for the team to make as many goals as possible in the set time limit (3 to 5 minutes)

• The different shooting spots are used for point values (1, 2, 3, etc). The team then adds up their points at the end of the time.

Modeling/Explanation: Prior to the game, the teacher will explain and then demonstrate how to do the activity. Independent Practice: Students can be given the opportunity to practice shooting against a wall or target prior to the game.

Lesson 3: ABC Hockey Concept/Topic to Teach: Teamwork, Puck handling, Shooting, Letter ID Standards Addressed: See your state standards General Goal(s) – The students will develop stick handling, shooting, taking turns, and letter identification. Specific Objectives: Students will continue to develop puck handling, shooting, and letter identification by retrieving correct pucks in alphabetical order, and shooting, or stick handling, to their goal. Required Materials:

• 1 stick for each student • 2 sets of Pucks (different colors for each team with different letter written on each puck) • 2 goals (cones can be used)

Introduction: • Class is divided into 2 teams, with each team lining up beside their goal. • Pucks are placed in the middle of the gym. On the signal, the first person runs out, finds their color

puck with the letter “A”, and uses the sticks to bring it back to the goal. • Once the puck is in the net, the next student runs out and finds the letter “B”, and repeats the steps • The game continues until both teams have completed the alphabet and all pucks are in the net. • Teamwork is encouraged when needed to identify the next letter.

Modeling/Explanation: Teacher models the retrieving, and shooting the puck prior to the activity. Independent Practice: This activity is designed to follow skill practice, which include shooting and stick handling. Physical Education K – 2nd Grade

Differentiated Instruction: Adaptations (For Students with Learning/Physical Disabilities):

• A partner can help the student find and identify the correct puck. • Student’s shooting zone may be closer to the target.

Extensions (For Gifted Students): • Shooting zone may be further away from the goal. • Students can shoot from where they get the puck.

Check for Understanding: Observation for hockey skills and letter identification Closure/Wrap-Up: Discuss at the end of the class about the challenges and successes of the activity. Evaluation: Observation Physical Education K – 2nd Grade

Lesson 4: Let’s Spell Bruins Concept/Topic to Teach: Puck Handling / Shooting / Basic Sight Word Spelling Standards Addressed: See your state standards. General Goal(s) – Students will develop the ability to shoot and puck handle. Specific Objectives: The students will continue to develop hockey skills including: shooting, puck/stick handling, team work, and spelling sight words. Required Materials:

• 1 stick for each student • 2 sets of pucks (different colors for each team with different letter written on each puck) • 2 goals (cones can be used) • List of class sight words.

Introduction:

• Prior to class, obtain a list of sight words students have been working on. • The class is broken into 2 groups, with lettered pucks in the middle of the gym. Teams line up

beside their goal with sticks. • The teacher gives the class one of the sight words (NO Repeat Letters). • The first person in the line must run out and find the first letter of the word and shoot the puck into

their team’s goal. The next person then repeats the step finding the next letter, and the game continues until the word is spelled correctly.

• Once the round is over, return the hockey pucks to the middle of the gym and start with a new word. You can also give the kids multiple words, as long as the letters do not repeat.

Modeling/Explanation: Teacher demonstrates how to shoot the puck into the net. Remember to reinforce that students need to keep their stick below their waist at all times, and to spell the word correctly. Independent Practice: Pre-teaching should be done with shooting, relays, and sight words. Differentiated Instruction: Adaptations (For Students with Learning/Physical Disabilities):

• Students may have a partner to help with activity. • Students may carry puck back to goal.

Lesson 5: Pass around the clock Concept/Topic to Teach: Passing and receiving, learning time Standards Addressed: See your state standards. General Goal(s) – The goal of this activity is to give students the opportunity to develop passing/receiving skills, and help learn how to tell time. Specific Objectives: Students will practice passing to the correct target, and also practice telling time on an analog clock. Required Materials:

• 1 stick for each student • 2 pucks • 1 or 2 sets of poly spots with numbers 1 – 12 written on them

Introduction: • Poly spots should be set up in the shape of a clock (size depends on ability level) • The class is divided into 1 or 2 groups, depending on the size of the class. • One student should be on each spot. (If class is too small to fill circle(s) leave space open then

have students switch to the spots) • The student on the “12” starts with the puck and passes it to the correct time, which is called out by

the teacher. The student receives the puck and waits for the next time to be given. • To increase difficulty, give 2 or 3 times and have the students pass in the correct pattern.

Modeling/Explanation:

• The teacher should model the proper method of passing and receiving. • The teacher should pre-teach how to tell time. • The teacher should demonstrate where to pass the time to.
