Dear Friends of Blue Ridge,

We have begun a new tradition at Brs of having an overarching theme for the academic year. Doing so gives us focus and inspiration for the year that lies ahead of us. This year our theme was The Blue ridge renaissance man. We challenged the boys to broaden their horizons by venturing into new arenas. For example, we urged those seeing themselves as “athletes” to become involved in the arts and those seeing themselves as “artists” to become more involved in the outdoors. simply stated, we challenged students to seek personal excellence in heretofore unexplored venues.

As I reflect on 2010-2011, I am filled with the belief that the renaissance theme is thriving at Blue ridge. Our students’ interests are wonderfully varied, and our course curriculum reflects their appreciation for the humanities, sciences, arts, athletics, healthy lifestyles and service to others. Our students are eager to expand their horizons – from our formal offerings and also through participating in clubs, taking up hobbies and, simply put, trying new things.

going Home WinnersThe Blue Ridge School Men’s Chorus placed first at the “Music in the Parks Festival” in the division A cat-egory. The festival took place at Busch Gardens, Williams-burg, VA, on May 13-14. With a rating of excellent, the Blue ridge singers were presented with a trophy for their outstanding performance. “I was so pleased with the guys,” said Mrs. Dolores DeAn-gelis, Choir Director. “It was a tough group of judges so I am really very proud that they did so well.”

Seong-Do “Steven” kim wins Southern Teachers Art contestSeong-Do “Steven” Kim was named one of twelve winners of the 2011 Southern Teachers Art Contest. This is the second year Southern Teachers has held the contest in which they feature

the winners’ works in a calendar which will be distributed to hundreds of private and independent schools around the south. Steven’s work was selected from hundreds of submissions by students grades 8-12 depicting a scene from their school’s campus. Steven’s acrylic on canvas depicts an aerial view of gibson memorial Chapel and martha Bagby Battle House.

Kim, from Jeonbuk, Korea, was a four-year boy at Blue Ridge. From his first year at BRS, he showed a remarkable talent for the visual arts and has proven himself as a master of sculptural form. His two-dimensional work shows great detail and accuracy. Steven received an art scholarship to attend Pratt institute in New York City where he plans to study industrial design.

2010-11 Parents’ Association OfficersSpring Parents’ Weekend marked the beginning term for 2011-12 Parents’ Association Officers. Past Presidents Suzanne and Greg Bush introduced the new slate of officers:

The Parents’ Association seeks to nurture parent-to-parent and school-to-parent communication and foster participation in school activities. Through a network of volunteers, the Association promotes faculty recognition and appreciation, assists the School with fundraising initiatives in order to support school programs, and makes recommendations to the Headmaster all in an effort to enhance the boys’ experience while away from home. Become involved by calling the Office of Advancement at 434.985.2811.

Dorm Enhancementsupdated dorm lobbies and hallways are creating a more homelike atmosphere. Hardwood floors and fresh, colorful paint enhance the lobby areas. Hallways throughout the living areas are decorated with famous works of art like the Picasso print pictured below. “I think it is important that Blue Ridge feels like a home, and this small project is helping to do that,” said Headmaster Dr. John O’Reilly. “Our boys really seem to appreciate the new look.”

The School plans to continue to make enhancements with new furniture and TVs in the near future. gifts to the Annual Fund made these renovations possible. Blue ridge especially thanks alumnus Stuart Brown ’73 of Augusta Frame Crafters who gave a gift in-kind for a portion of the framing.

The Class of 2011

Blue Ridge’s Class of 2011 will be remembered as a group of uniquely talented young men who, with determined spirits and good humor, forged their own paths to success. On the

morning of May 28th, family and friends of the 59 members of the Class of 2011 gathered to celebrate the many successes that this group of young men achieved at Blue Ridge and to wish them the best as they look to their futures beyond St. George.

The Class of 2011 graduated more four-year boys, 21, than any previous class in recent history, and stands out among recent classes for the wide range of talents possessed by its members. Malick Kone, Chad Holley and Isaiah Battle, for example, all secured positions on NCAA Division I rosters, while Stephen Kim

and Henry Guerra, two incredibly gifted artists, earned scholarships at two of the most prestigious art schools in the country. Drew Trommer, who started the BRS news team in his two years here, will continue to study journalism at Ohio University next year, and Class President Jamie Masterson will continue to embody leadership at the US Merchant Marine Academy.

While they will find themselves in different places next year, each member of the Class of 2011 leaves Blue Ridge with the understanding that success comes through hard work and perseverance. Undoubtedly, it will only be a short while before we hear stories about how these young men are making a difference in their communities and in the world.

BasketballThe Barons basket-ball team had a his-toric season in 2010-11 with a 26-2 record – the best in School history. during the season, the Barons won a number of tournaments and the Virginia inde-pendent Conference (ViC) Championship. Head Varsity Coach Bill ramsey’s team

was ranked number 1 in the state most of the year and made the state finals for the third straight year. The Blue and White played a tough game against the Benedictine Cadets but came up short for the title los-ing 52-45.

Blue ridge’s talented team also beat cross-town rival Miller School four times during the season, including wins in the ViC Championship and State Tournament. many of the players received recognitions through-out the season. malick Kone ’11 and Cameron Ander-son ’11 were both nominees for the mcdonald’s All-American game, and both were named as 1st Team All-State players. Chad Holley ’11 and isaiah Battle ’11 were selected as 2nd Team All-State. All four will go on to play athletics in college ranks: malick Kone for Rutgers University (NJ), Chad Holley for Mount Saint Mary’s (MD), Cameron Anderson for Hampden-Syd-ney College (VA), Isaiah Battle for football at Clemson university (SC).

WrestlingThe Baron’s wres-tling squad had a tough season with eight of their eleven matches on the road. The young squad struggled early but gained confidence as the season pro-gressed. Torian Pe-

gram ’14 was named Most Improved Player, and Jacques Homan ’12 was given the Coach’s Award for his commitment and ded-ication to the sport. The 285 lb Cameron Njomo ’11 and 112 lb Ryan Gibson ’11 placed 4th and 8th respectively in their weight classes at the Virginia State Wrestling Tournament.

BaseballThe baseball team had a challenging 4-8 season. The Bar-ons enjoyed big wins over roanoke Cath-olic and Fishburne military Academy but faced tough losses against cross-town rivals Covenant and St. Anne’s Belfield.

There were some strong story lines inside this season. Zach Roberts ’11 persevered through a shoulder injury and played whatever position he could to give the team the best chance to win. Head Coach Chris Cun-ningham awarded Juan dominguez ’11 the most Valu-able Player award because of his outstanding efforts. Dominguez anchored the team at short stop, pitcher and catcher -- a true utility player. While at the plate, Dominguez led the team in every major statistical cat-egory. Four-year player Sota Fukura ’11 received the most improved Player Award for his steady strides over the course of his time with the Barons, and Den-ver Harris ’11 was awarded the Coaches Award for his willingness to fill-in at a number of positions, great work ethic and positive attitude. Another role player, Garrett Scarborough ’11, made important contribu-tions with a batting average of .481 with 12 RBI’s. The Barons look to rebuild next year after losing nine se-niors in 2011. With only three underclassmen return-ing, Coach Cunningham will be looking for new talent on registration day.

Golf SummaryThe Blue ridge golf team had a great year on the course, finishing 14-3. The Barons won their closest match by one stroke against east-ern Mennonite 168-169. At season’s end, the Barons were ranked 6th in the Vir-ginia division i state

rankings, and ultimately finished third in the Virginia independent Conference (ViC) Tournament.

Chris Hickman ’12 had the second best individual score of the conference tournament, which helped him earn a 1st Team All-Conference spot. Joining him were Mason Schmidt ’12 and James Weddington ’11, who earned 2nd Team All-ViC honors. The strength of

the Barons’ season earned them a spot in the Virginia State Tournament where they finished eighth. Hickman, team MVP, was selected as a member of 1st Team All-State. Head Coach Trip darrin recognized James Weddington with the Coaches Award for his consistent performance throughout the sea-son, dedication and team leadership and John Cho ’11 with the most improved Player award for his steady development throughout his career at Blue ridge. Thanks to the return-ing talent and up-and-coming new prospects, the 2012 season should be exciting for the Barons.

LacrosseThe Varsity lacrosse team finished the 2010-2011 cam-paign with a 16-3 overall record. For the second straight year, the Barons captured Virginia indepen-dent Conference (ViC) regu-lar season and tournament titles after beating Virginia episcopal School by a score

of 19-2 in the Championship game. The Barons proved to

be the most potent offense in the state as they scored 289 goals on the season and on 70% of their extra man opportuni-ties.

Garrett Chan ’12 and Tanner Fisher ’12 led the group offensive-ly scoring 81 and 63 points respectively. The trio of Ty Klarner ’13, Tyler Pace ’13 and Chase Fraser ’13 each scored in the 50+ point range and will be counted on to step up their produc-tion in their Junior campaigns. Cory Takahara ’12, Dave Mc-Skimming ’12 and Tanner Fisher ’12 were the team’s leading groundball men, notching 81, 70 and 110 groundballs on the season respectively. defensively the Barons were led by Kody TeKanawa ’11, Mitchel Cavallarin ’11 and Andrew Wilson ’11. Both TeKanawa and Cavallarin garnered All-VIC honors, and Wilson broke the single-season record for saves in a game during the Barons 2 OT win over Cape Henry Collegiate on Parents’ Weekend.

in the past two years the Barons have moved from Virginia’s division iii to division ii and then from division ii to division I. During that time, the Barons have amassed a 30-7 overall record. Also during that stretch, 15 individual and program re-cords have been broken, 17 Barons have garnered All-Confer-ence honors, 5 have been named All-State during that stretch, and 11 Barons have gone on to play in the NCAA. The following players in the Class of 2010-2011 will continue their playing ca-reers at the next level: Jared Capner at Florida Tech (FL), Kody TeKanawa at Dowling College (NY), Zak Folks at Seton Hill University (PA), Nick Hayes-Watts at Mars Hill College (NC), Andrew Wilson at Virginia Wesleyan College (VA) and mitchel Cavallarin at Hampden-Sydney College (VA).

The Barons’ former Head JV and Assistant Varsity lacrosse Coach Kyle gardner will be taking the reins of the lacrosse Programs from Coach Nic Bell in 2011-12. Coach gardner will look to establish the Barons at the division i level and across the mid-Atlantic in the coming years. The future is certainly bright as the Barons return 17 Varsity lettermen and 7 starters from this year’s squad.

TennisTennis struggled to find their rhythm on the court this year as the team ex-perienced only one win verses liberty Christian Academy. Head Coach Paul Fehlner recognized david-son Faunce ’11 and Steven Kim ’11 for their positive attitudes and leadership with the Coach’s Award. evan Bierly ’12 was named the most improved Player.

Track and FieldTrack and Field had a suc-cessful season placing 4th overall in the Virginia in-dependent Conference. Liberty Christian Academy, eastern mennonite School and Fishburne military Academy took the top three spots at the confer-ence meet, but Blue Ridge was able to hold off Carlisle

School and Virginia episco-pal with an overall score of

63. The 4x100 relay team of Dillon McBride ’11, Andrew Snell ’11, Cassius Hijarunguru ’12 and Sean Jones ’11 had a strong performance placing third. Andy Hughes ’11, Patrick Painter ’11 and Alex mcgill ’11 all placed third in their individual events at the conference meet. Jacques Homan ’12, because of his sec-ond place finish in the triple jump and consistent performance throughout the year, earned the MVP Award. Head Coach Jer-ry Jared also recognized Masa Mizuno ’13 and Patrick Painter ’11 for the most improved and Coach’s Award respectively.

W hen Blue ridge School’s director of Outdoor Programs Tony Brown initiated the mountain biking team

nine years ago, he could not have imagined that just a few years later it would be one of the fastest growing high school interscholastic sports in the country.

In 2011, the sport of mountain biking got a big break in Virginia with the conception of the first USA Cycling sanctioned high school series in the state, the Virginia High School mountain Bike Series (VAHS mTB). The VAHS mTB was founded by miller School’s head endurance team coach Peter Hufnagel. Brown and the Blue ridge School Outdoor Program have worked with Hufnagel to organize the series, and the BRS mountain bike team has been an active participant in each race. The VAHS mTB hosted 6 events in 2011 including a technical 7-mile single-track course on Blue Ridge School’s 751 acre campus. All VAHS MTB events are open to all high school and junior high/middle school students in the Commonwealth.

“In the past, our team would just participate with adults in the local weekend races,” said Brown. “The series has given our guys a gauge to see how they are performing, and they are competing against guys in their own age range. i think this is going to have a very

positive impact on the sport in Virginia.”

High school mountain biking teams and leagues have been successful in California for a number of years. recent growth in popularity has led to major developments in states such as Colorado, Texas and now Virginia. The challenging terrain of Blue Ridge School’s campus offers cyclists some of the most technical and difficult trails in the state.

Mountain biking is offered as a competitive sport at Blue ridge both in the fall and spring trimesters. Popularity among the student body has grown, and participants have the opportunity to train on some of the most arduous trails in the region.

In addition to the VAHS MTB sanctioned race, Blue Ridge hosts the annual ride the ridge event every spring that is open to both the student body and the public. Proceeds from that race are donated to World Bicycle Relief, whose mission is to provide access to independence and livelihood through the power of bicycles. This coming academic year the team will also host the “Bacon Hola Bonk” race to benefit Stop Hunger Now, an international hunger relief organization.

Recent graduate Dillon Long finished 4th in the state according to the VAHS mTB polls for 2011. Six other members of the Blue Ridge team placed in the top 31 in the state with Hayden Castle ’11 and Daniel Nelson ’14 ranking 16th and 17th respectively.

A record number of nine sets of siblings attended Blue Ridge School in 2010-11. Aristotle McDonald ’10 shares his experience as a “younger” Blue Ridge brother.


There are different meanings of the word brotherhood. It can be the relationship between brothers or an alliance between people who share a common experience. I am fortunate to understand both definitions. As one of five boys in my family, I certainly understand the relationship between brothers, and, by attending Blue ridge school, I am part of the Blue ridge Brotherhood.

My brother Abraham “Abe” ’08 arrived at Blue Ridge midway through his sophomore year in the fall of 2005. I was a less-than-reputable eighth grader at the time. In 2001, we had lost our father, and over the course of the following years we were grief stricken. We acted out and let our grades plummet. an educational consultant and family friend told my mom about Blue ridge, and the following week abe was in the dorms. I followed the next year.

Abe was a role model for me. In his first year, he befriended just about everyone in St. George. From freshmen to faculty, Abe knew and was liked by everyone. I remember him coming home for breaks that first year, telling stories of his new “brothers” and teachers. It was remarkable seeing him in his coat and tie and feeling his confidence as he walked into the room. I remember thinking my dad would be so proud. It was a lot to live up to, but I was excited for the following year.

Having abe at my wing made the transition to boarding school life easy. my brother and I always lived on the same hall, and I was able to make friends easily with his encouragement. Like most teenage brothers, we would bicker and argue, but teachers always guided us to a resolution - they understood it was just brother stuff. I felt that the faculty and staff were trying to strengthen our bond as brothers. I think we probably had less to argue about being at Blue ridge than if we were at home.

I watched as my brother became a leader. During abe’s senior year, he was a prefect and member of the Honor Council and Student Council. I saw how he was acting as a role model for the other students, not just me. The community respected him, and I respected him. Sometimes it was difficult having a brother who was so well thought of and liked. I felt I had to live up to his example, and I did. I become a prefect, Class president and, unlike Abe, I was a Four-Year Boy. I like to think that, even though I followed in his footsteps, I made my own mark on the school.

each boy’s experience at Blue ridge is different, and for me my brother’s presence was a part of it. I cannot imagine it any other way. now that we attend different colleges, our time at Blue ridge is something we always can remember together – the pranks we pulled in the dorms or Mr. Niederberger’s final exam. Whatever it was about being at Blue ridge with my brother, it strengthened our relationship and is something I cherish. I hope all the other brothers who attend school together have the same great experience we had.

he New York Auxiliary was founded in 1909 - the same year as Blue ridge school. Through a number

of coincidences and the determined spirit of a young reverend, the school cultivated strong ties with a philanthropic group of women in new York City who have continued their support of the school for 100 years and have organized one of new York City’s longest running charity events.

The story of the new York auxiliary began in 1905 when The reverend George pickett mayo spoke of the need for a school in the Blue ridge mountains at st. Faith’s Training school for Deaconesses in new York. Captivated by The reverend’s message, a young Deaconess in the audience named Bertha Lawrence traveled south to Virginia to aid in reverend mayo’s mission work. she and The reverend formed a close friendship and shared a dream of one day opening an industrial school in the area in order to equip young people with the skills necessary to better their lives. Deaconess Lawrence’s sister Harriett soon followed in her footsteps and began teaching at a nearby mission school. In 1909 this group’s dream was realized when Blue ridge school opened its doors.

also in 1909, reverend mayo married Harriet in new York. Before the wedding, reverend mayo and Deaconess Lawrence made a special visit to mr. George Gordon Battle, a prominent new York lawyer and friend of the Lawrence family. mr. Battle and his wife martha Bagby held a strong interest in serving Blue ridge school. martha believed so strongly in the school’s mission that she founded the new York auxiliary, to fundraise for the new school.

mrs. martha Bagby Battle enlisted the help and interest of her friends, chiefly those with southern heritage living in New York. The auxiliary began its charity work by hosting “silver

teas,” a benefit event popular at the time in which ladies would have tea together, leaving donations in a silver bowl. The auxiliary expanded from teas to bridge parties to a charity ball in 1924. The new York auxiliary Ball has been held annually since and is said to be the oldest charity benefit, held in unbroken succession, in new York City. not even two World Wars and the Great Depression could hinder the auxiliary’s passionate fundraising on behalf of the school.

“The new York auxiliary Ball is one of Blue ridge school’s great traditions,” says Headmaster Dr. John O’reilly. “It is really wonderful to have supporters, faculty, parents and alumni together in celebration of the school: it is truly a spectacular party! The fact that this wonderful group of women has been supporting our school since our foundation is, quite frankly, amazing.”

Dr. O’reilly explained that the auxiliary has remained supportive not only through the major global events of the past 100 years but also through the school’s transitions. During Blue ridge’s shift to a college preparatory school in 1962, the auxiliary supported the change citing a great need for a school for children whose potential is not being realized in traditional school settings.

“The history of the auxiliary is amazing, and their impact on the School can be seen just by touring campus,” said Dr. O’reilly.

The Auxiliary’s efforts support scholarships, capital projects and numerous other school fundraising efforts. In addition to providing financial support, various Auxiliary members have served on the Board of Trustees.

“For many of the members, myself included, involvement in the new York auxiliary is like being part of a family,” remarked alexandra Gregg smith, president of the new York auxiliary. alexandra’s mother mrs. John C. smith was a longtime member of the Auxiliary and co-chaired several balls through the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s. Additionally, Alexandra’s grandmother mrs. Will r. Gregg was a close friend of former Headmaster Hatcher C. Williams and also was president of the auxiliary for a time. mrs. Gregg’s portrait hangs today in the Hatcher C. Williams Library.

“While the school is not close to us in proximity, the mission is near and dear to our hearts.” mrs. smith continued, “We have made it a tradition to sponsor faculty and/or staff members to attend the Ball so that we can express our deep appreciation to them for their commitment to the students. We want them to see firsthand our efforts to support them in their mission to teach young men to reach.”

The Ball, which is always held in January, will have an asian theme in celebration of 2012 – the Chinese Year of the Dragon. This year’s Ball co-chairs are Mrs. E. Franklin Harris II and mrs. ernest e. Hunt IV. Tickets will go on sale in October 2011 and will be available online at www.blueridgeschool.com/nyauxiliary. Alumni NewsThe BRS Alumni council Welcomes new Officers and Members in 2011-12Jim Moore ’75 was voted as the next President of the Alumni Council at the annual winter meeting in February. Moore, who will be taking the reins from Willie Nelson ’86, will begin his tenure at the fall Alumni Association meeting, October 15, 2011. Jim was a Prefect and member of the Honor Council at Blue ridge. He was also on the BRS 1975 National Prep Wrestling Championship team and placed third in the na-tion in his weight class. early in Jim’s career in education, he taught history and coached wrestling and lacrosse at Blue ridge School for two years. Jim, his wife and two children live in Hagerstown, MD. Peter Holland ’66, who has recently returned to the Council, will serve as Vice-President. Peter served on the original BrS Alumni Council during the mid-70’s. While a student at Blue Ridge, he was a Prefect and member of the Honor Council. Additionally, Peter served on the Board from

1991 to 1999, and then as the Alumni Relations Director from 1999 to 2007. He and his wife live in Franktown, VA. Bryan Wood ’86 will serve as the new Alumni Council Secretary. Bryan has served as Co-Chair of the Alumni and Friends golf Classic since 2008 and has been a member of the Council since 2007. He was a Prefect while at Blue Ridge. He, his wife and three children live in Yorktown, VA. Ben Hiatt ’71 will continue to serve as Treasurer. Ben has served on the Council since 1992 and has earned lifetime membership. He, too, was a Prefect while at Blue Ridge. Ben served as Co-Chair of the Alumni and Friends Golf Classic from its inception in 1991 to 2007. He, his wife and three children live in Fairfax Station, VA. New members to the Alumni Council are rory Bosek ’04 of lynch-burg, VA; Cliff Curlee ’81 of Richmond, VA; Mark Dreux ’94 of Glen Allen, VA; Huntley Galleher ’80 of Saluda, VA; and Bruce Lee ’79, of Mystic, CT. The Alumni Council serves as the governing body for the Alumni Association whose mission is to inform, connect and engage alumni of Blue ridge while supporting the School’s mission and goals. All BrS alumni are inducted into the Alumni Association upon graduation. The Alumni Association raises money for the School by way of the Annual Alumni and Friends golf Classic as well as other fundraising efforts.
