Grateful BY DR. KEITH FELTON, SENIOR PASTOR

For over 200 years, First Baptist has been makinghope visible to the city of Frankfort, FranklinCounty, the Commonwealth, and the world. Thispast year has been one of the most challenging inour history. In difficult times, one of the bestexercises for the mind and heart is to name thingsof which we are grateful.

You have heard the staff say frequently howthankful we are for Adam & David Columbia. Theyhave tirelessly kept us connected with each otheron Sundays by broadcasting our worship throughlive streaming. Our church is indebted to them fortheir faithfulness and technological expertise. Well over a year ago our church voted on creatinga brand-new staff position, Director ofCommunications. I knew how important thiswould be before we knew anything about thepandemic. We needed a point person forextending our reach through social media, educating the public about FBC, and coming toage with all things in an ever-increasing virtualworld. We have all witnessed the critical nature ofthis position held by Kara Johnson, especiallyduring this pandemic. Thank you, Kara.

I am grateful for creative and industrious AssociatePastors. Michelle, Richard, Amanda, and Marcusadapted and simply excelled in a ministerial worldthey were not trained for. We hired an excellentnew Office Manager in Amy Carpenter during thiscrazy time, and she has surpassed all expectationsin meeting our needs in this important position. As always, our Facilities Manager, Tony Hager, hasdone an outstanding job in making sureeverything in our building was taken care of,especially with the flood. Our Accompanists didnot miss a beat during this past year. LindaMcKinley and Lois Summers brought us beautifulmusical offerings every Sunday, providing a senseof normalcy in a chaotic time. When we thought itwas safe, many of you came to our Sanctuary andhelped us with a song, a reading, or a prayer thatenriched our services. Others didn’t hesitate to geton camera and provide us a video of your prayer or

some other contribution for the service and for allof this, we are eternally thankful.

I still shake my head at times when thinking abouthow incredibly faithful all of you have been withtithes and offerings. To be in the black after a yearof pandemic speaks volumes about your spiritualmaturity and understanding of church life. I can’ttell you how encouraging it has been for me toexperience the devotion and care you have for ourchurch. This made it possible for us to confidentlycall two new Associate Pastors and launch asignificant construction project to provideaccessible ADA restrooms on the main floor of ourbuilding. I have found myself on more than oneoccasion getting emotional in talking tocolleagues about your commitment and support.

Our staff has relied more on Deacons this yearthan any other. Our Deacons took on a huge taskof having monthly contact lists of our membershipand making sure we all stayed connected and needs were met. On several occasions I’ve beencontacted by various members on how much thishas meant to them. We are all grateful for ourDeacon body and how they have stepped upduring this time. We are grateful for our Sundayschool leadership and their adjustment to Zoommeetings and teaching in these conditions. Ourcommittees, our Children’s Wednesday nightleaders, participating at our business meetings, and Wednesday Bible Study/Prayer Meeting haveall been done differently this year, but you havemade it work!

We are going to reopen the doors soon and returnto in-person activities. Let’s be respectful of thosewho choose to continue participating with usvirtually. My prayer is that we will champion andcherish our gatherings more than ever. I know Iwill. Thank you for your patience, prayers, andencouragement. I believe with every challengecomes opportunity and lessons that can help usgrow and become the Christ-followers andbeloved community God desires.
