Christ together through pastorates inOcker, West, Crosby, Pasadena,Nelsonville, Fayetteville, Industry,Wesley, Temple, Caldwell, New Tabor,Dime Box, College Station, and Granger.“Brother Albert” loved the people heserved during his 50+ years of activeministry, presiding over multitudes ofbaptisms, marriages, confirmations, revivals, vacation Bible schools, re-treats, summer camps, and Unityevents. He encouraged many to fol-low God’s call into active ministrypositions. He enjoyed fishing for cat-fish at church members’ ponds, andhe struck fear into every fallen leaf, rouge weed, rebellious crepe myrtlebranch, and fire ant mound as hestepped into the back yard.

Everyone knows that behind ev-ery good pastor is a spouse thatshares the same level of love for theLord. Annie felt God’s pleasure inserving the church through leadingthe Christian Sisters, supporting Mis-sion work, teaching youth and youngadult Sunday School classes, volun-teering as Hus School Encampmentnurse, and singing in the choir. Therewas not a Sunday School room thatAnnie didn’t want to give a fresh coatof paint nor a young adult class that

she didn’t want to lead. Annie wasproud of her Czech heritage, travelingto the homeland three times, speakingthe language throughout her yearsand singing on the Taylor Czech Choirdebut CD. Many church fund-raisersfelt the onslaught of hand-craftedsock monkeys, which Annie enjoyedmaking.

The two loved singing duets –especially at Christmas time. Theirfavorite was “My jdeme za tebou”,which translates to “We will followYou”. And that’s exactly what theydid. Through everything they en-countered along their earthly sojourn –the Sundays where Albert preached 4sermons, the sandwiches Annie madefor people stopping by the parsonageat midnight even though she had tobe at the nurses’ station early the nextmorning, the upset parishioner de-manding a resignation on the frontporch, the smiles of the childrenblessed during Vacation Bible School, the encouraging words and prayersat the right moment for someone inneed, the harmonies produced in theChristmas Cantatas – Albert and Annie,by loving God and loving people, hitthe center of the mark. What a won-derful legacy they’ve left for all of us.

Let’s be honest. We all need a deeper relationship

with Jesus Christ. If this concept strikes some fear of

the unknown in your heart,If this concept seems something

elementary to your thinking,If this concept appears as a

suggestion for someone else,Resist your current cognitive hike.Draw back to the premise at hand. You need a deeper relationship with

Jesus Christ.We all do, desperately.

And the need never wanes, but ratherintensifies ironically as you drawcloser to the Invisible One who isVisible in our lives and throughoutthis earth.

The skies speak His praise and Hisfaithfulness.

He forgives without ulterior motive.

Truly, Madly, Deeply. Amen.- by Rev. Vanessa Mitchell

Love is where He stands. In His Presence is where you belong.

He is Jesus. He is the King and Priest over all

in our relationshipsWe need Him.

Here is a picture of this love thatChrist is calling us to live: first withHim and then with others. The ApostlePaul, filled with God the Holy Spiritexplains this kind of deep relationshipto the Christians in Philippi long ago:

Yet whatever gains I had, these Ihave come to regard as loss because

of Christ. More than that, I regardeverything as loss because of thesurpassing value of knowing ChristJesus my Lord. For His sake I havesuffered the loss of all things, and Iregard them as rubbish, in order thatI may gain Christ and be found inHim, not having a righteousness ofmy own that comes from the law, butone that comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God based onfaith. I want to know Christ and thepower of His resurrection and thesharing of His sufferings by becom-ing like Him in His death, if somehowI may attain the resurrection from thedead. Not that I have already ob-tained this or have already reachedthe goal; but I press on to make it myown, because Christ Jesus has mademe His own. Beloved, I do not con-sider that I have made it my own; butthis one thing I do: forgetting whatlies behind and straining forward towhat lies ahead, I press on towardthe goal for the prize of the heavenlycall of God in Christ Jesus.(Philippians 3:7-14, NRSV)

Ask yourself…1. What priorities or tasks in my

life am I willing to place second to thepursuit of a deeper relationship withJesus?

2. How has Christ matured mythinking and my role with others as Ihave suffered through particularstruggles?

3. Am I willing to forget my past? How about the past of those I love?

4. In what manner could I stepforth today somewhat differently thanusual to live within the Call that Jesushas placed on my life?

A prayer:

My Christ,I love You.Truly, madly, deeply…Search within me and fill me with all

Your fullnessLaunch in my soul a new day of living

and loving all in Your way and inYour power.

Selfless with others.Kind to myself.Clinging to Your truth for vision and

strength amid struggles.My Christ,I love you.Truly,Madly,Deeply.Amen.Amen.Amen.

Resist your current cognitive hike.Draw back to the premise at hand. You need a deeper relationship withJesus Christ. We all do, desperately.

Thoughts about giving…

Remembering the Unity of the Brethren or anyof its ministries is a fitting testimony of yourbelief. Your gift in a will can be a legacy thatcontinues to affect the Christian values, mission, and ministry that is important to you.

You can give without restrictions and let us use the funds forthe most pressing needs or you can specify how, when, orwhere you want the funds used.

You can require that we hold the principle as an endowmentand use only the earnings each year.

You can give in memory or in the honor of someone.

Your gift can be contingent. The funds go to someone if theysurvive you and if not, then to the Unity.

You can tell us now that you have named the Unity in yourwill and allow us to express our gratitude…or you can let itbe known later.

There are many other ways to give. Contact any Board ofGrants and Bequests member about what you can give andhow you can give.

Howdy Fellow Brethren,My name is Deanna Hairrell, and I

am a member of the Snook BrethrenChurch. This summer I traveled acrossthe ocean to the Czech Republic tohelp spread God’s kingdom. I traveledwith a group from First Baptist Churchof Forney to Plzen, Czech Republic, where we helped lead an EnglishCamp.

This camp is a sort of day campwhere we help kids and adults im-prove their English while learningabout God. We sang songs, playedgames, and shared Bible stories. Thegroup I was with was ages 11-13, andwe had 46 Czech kids!

This experience was so amazingbecause I was able to be immersedinto another culture and God openedmy eyes to how different but alike weall are. These kids struggled with the

same things as us, but so many donot believe God is there to help themout.

I am so thankful to God for allow-ing me to have this experience. It hastruly opened up a new piece of myheart. I want to thank everyone thathelped me get there and have thisexperience, whether it was prayer ormonetary donation. Both are so greatlyappreciated.

If any congregations would like meto come and further share my experi-ences. I would be glad to! Just letAngie Hairrell know and she will tellme. Thank you, and God bless.

A Heart for Jesus

Prepare: Attach the following to each Tootsie Roll Pop.1. Before taking off wrapper, read Jeremiah 23:24.2. Take off wrapper, then read Romans 3:23.3. Lick away the candy, but before eating the center read 1 John 1:9.4. Finish the chewy center, then read Galatians 2:20.

Discuss:Who loves Tootsie Roll Pops! What do you like about them? I likethat there is delicious candy on the outside, and even more deliciouschewy Tootsie Roll in the center. This candy reminds me about howa person can have a relationship with Jesus.

First, the center of this candy is soft, like a person’s heart. The Bibletalks about having a hard heart. How does a heart become hard? Well,it is sin. The Bible says, “All have sinned and fall short of the gloryof God” (Romans 3:23). The hard candy reminds me of sin thatcovers the heart. Each time someone sins, another layer of hard stuffsurrounds the heart. Then, to make it worse, people refuse to admitthey are sinners. Instead, they cover their sin with pride, denial, evendoing things that make them look good. That is like the wrappercovering this candy.

When a person removes the wrapper of denial and pride (removewrapper), the Holy Spirit can complete His work. He can lick past allthe hard stuff covering your heart (take a few licks) and give you thegift of life that comes from knowing Jesus as Savior. Your heart thenbelongs to Jesus, and that is a wonderful ending.

Are you ready for some homework? I want each of you to take yourTootsie Roll Pop home and eat it. However, as you do I want you tofollow the instructions on the small slip of paper that is attached. That part is very important.

A number of years ago I attendedan evangelism workshop which endedwith the presenter telling us that if wehad received nothing else from theworkshop, that we should go back toour home churches and paint some-thing red, something that would benoticed. That statement stayed withme. The church that I attended at thattime had nothing to be painted redthat would have made any positivedifference. All was brick, glass, andmetal on the outside.

Earlier this year I approached theBoard of Elders here at Granger Breth-ren with several ideas for “changingthings up” to both the interior andexterior of the facility. One of thoseideas was to paint the doors of thechurch that faced south onto Broad-way Street red, a vivid red color aschosen by our pianist and well-knownarea artist, Suzanne Huser.

The Church with the Red Doors- by Rev. Larry Zabcik, Pastor

Granger Brethren Church

Little did anyone realize at the timethat a church with red doors holdsgreat historical significance, as wasdiscovered by another of our churchmembers, Sandy Strmiska.

Sandy stated, “My immediatethought was the sacrificial blood ofChrist and all who enter may be savedif they choose to do so, and I wasright, but it goes a little deeper thanthat.” Here is what else she discovered:

• Painting the doors red started inthe Middle Ages, and the northern, southern, western, and eastern doorswere painted red for the blood ofChrist and the sign of the cross;Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

• The red doors supposedly shutout any evil from the outside anddesignated it as holy ground and aplace of refuge.

• The use of red doors on churchesgoes back centuries, and there are

Regardless of what we have done or how much we havesinned, the Holy Spirit can still reach us. He is still there tolove us and forgive us of our sins. This month’s lesson usesTootsie Roll Pops to illustrate this encouraging message.

several meanings connected with reddoors, and some of them depend onthe type of church it is.

• Red is used as a reminder of thePassover and a sign that the HolySpirit is there.

• Church doors began to be paintedred as a way of remembering themartyrs and their ultimate sacrificethat they had made for their faith.

• The red doors of churches alsosymbolize sanctuary, refuge, and safetyfrom physical and spiritual evil/dan-ger. Those in need would not becaptured or harmed inside the holywalls of the church, which offeredphysical and spiritual protection. Noteven a soldier could come after anenemy who had gone through the reddoors on a church, because anyonewho would dare to desecrate such aholy place would be doomed.

• Some believe that the doors ofthe Wittenberg Cathedral, where Martin

• Today many Episcopal, Lutheran,Methodist, and some Roman Catholicchurches proclaim with their red doorsthat their churches are a haven foremotional and spiritual healing, andare a place of refuge and safety, forgiveness and reconciliation. Thered doors now show that the warmth, light, and presence of the Holy Spiritis there for everyone who enters.

As I initially told the Board ofElders in seeking permission for thered doors, to me at least, red issymbolic of the Holy Spirit and theDay of Pentecost. The worst thatcould happen would be that we wouldbecome known as the “Church withthe Red Doors.” As it turned out, thesignificance is so much greater. Thanksbe to God.

Robert separately in another townalong a different road until the dryseason returns. Ruth is discipling hersister-in-law, Petra (whom we’ve men-tioned, both are Mixtecs). Petra pas-tors in El Fortin, but she is too faraway to travel to the coaching groups.Ruth will be the coach, taking hertraining materials once a month.

This Friday we return to the areaand will spend a long day (9 a.m. until10 p.m.!) going to each of three lead-ers’ areas to mentor them about theirrole as mentors to the others. We areconvinced our efforts will be multi-plied through these men to many overthe next years.

Then Alex, the head of SinFronteras, the Mexican mission agencywhich we help and who organized thepastor’s meetings, spoke up aboutsomeone who hadn’t come to thecarport, Gabino. He’s a pastor fromthe most isolated village of all, 6 or 7hours away from Oaxaca City orTlaxiaco. Gabino makes the effort tocome in to the pastor’s meeting everytwo months, but he can’t make it toany of the three coaching groupsbecause they are just too far away.Alex said we had to do something forhim anyway. He represents a group ofa dozen or so Mixtec pastors whowould be involved in this pastoraltraining program if they could. Whatto do? We brainstormed a bit. It willfall on Robert to get another coachinggroup started in his area, and Alexand Marcos (one of the three groupleaders) offered to help out with visitsas well. I want very much to go,

though at this post-baby, post-can-cer stage of life, I am not as able tohandle 10-hour bus rides anymore.Robert’s first visit there will be in lateAugust.

Pray with us for this group ofpastors starting out on a new adven-ture of training, raising up new lead-ers, and church planting.

From the Thiessen’sin Mexico…

Dear friends,When you have more people in

your group than you invited, and youhave to send out for more chairs, youbegin to think maybe something goodis happening. Saturday 20 or so of uswere packed in a tight circle under acarport talking about the new pasto-ral study program that the indigenouspastors of our Oaxacan area havebegun. These pastors come from iso-lated villages, and it’s very hard forthem to get training, especially any-thing they can pass on easily to theirleadership teams. Men who want tostart new groups in neighboring un-churched towns.

This was our first meeting sinceorganizing three co-mentoring groupsat the pastor’s meeting two monthsago. Now we were reporting, evaluat-ing, and adjusting. One group hasbegun taking the Lord’s Supper forthe very first time on its own, withoutwaiting for mother church in the capi-tal to authorize it. That pastor toldhow the booklet he had studied onthe Lord’s Supper had helped him see

the importance of doing this regularlyin his congregation. Mariano (mis-sionary to San Pedro, from previousletters) had studied and relayed teach-ing on Jesus’ command to give gener-ously, and his congregation has be-gun tithing for the first time. (HisMixtec disciple Pedro was there in thegroup for the first time as a newpastor!) Another pastor, Pepe, de-scribed how his church has commis-sioned a new leader, Pascual, to opena church in another town. Pascual iseager, chomping at the bit, and Pepewas glad he had something to givehim – a set of Bible studies based onBible stories to share with others. And so it went. In each group thepastors had read, passed on, andapplied their studies in their churchesand in new Bible study groups or newchurches.

Then came the time to evaluateand adjust. Mario couldn’t get to hisco-mentoring group because the rainshave been so severe that the river hasflooded and cut off the road. We tooktime to talk about how we could keephim connected to the rest of thegroup. He might have to meet with

June 11th marked the beginning ofa very exciting week at Seaton Breth-ren Church. The cause of the excite-ment was a really super VBSprogram. The many people who madethe program such a success wererewarded by knowing they reachedmany youth in the community andmade a difference.

The week-long VBS involved overa hundred people including children, youth, leaders, and support staff. Each night we had a meal followed bysinging, skits, cinema, imaginationstation, Bible Stories. and games.Mission collections received will beused for the James Robison’s WaterFor Life ministry.

Early in the planning stage, thecommittee in charge selected a GroupVBS Program entitled, Maker FunFactory Created by God Built for aPurpose. It was a good choice andworth the cost.

Seaton Brethren Church:The Power of VBS

Pastor Denise Mikeska stated thatVBS is a great way to reach out to thecommunity sharing the good news ofJesus Christ. For some kids, this is theonly Jesus they get. SBC takes theresponsibility of where we have beenplanted seriously. One measure for usof if we are making a difference in ourarea is the answer to a question…IfSBC disappeared tomorrow. wouldanyone in our community notice?...and I think we can boldly say, “Yes!”All glory and praise to Jesus Christour Lord.

If you think that your church can’tmuster the staff and talent to do anall-out VBS in your community, juststep out boldly and say, “we aregoing to do it,” and you may besurprised at the talented people thatwill help you make this a reality. And,of course, pray with the expectationthat the Lord will make it a reality.

Dear friends and family,I write this update with fear and

trembling as we press into an un-known future. Yet I believe it is a goodand beautiful future.

Many things have happened as weare going through the process calledgrieving. Words are hard to describe, but much has travelled through mybrain as far as, well, everything. Wehave been continually busy withcamps and swim team.

I am coming to the point where Ireally do want to live my life to thefullest. Which really means – how canI serve Jesus, our living Savior, wher-ever, whenever, whatever, and withwhomever He chooses to place me.The kingdom perspective has cap-tured my heart and I am willing tofollow.

With that declaration, here are afew items for which I covet yourprayers:

1. I want to begin a dialogue withOMF and what role I might play inmission-related work.

2. Next week, July 17-21, we willattend Camp Carousel, a camp de-signed for grieving the loss of a lovedone. People continually ask about mykids, and hopefully this will be a pieceof the healing process.

3. Please pray for several friendswho have recently been diagnosedwith cancer or similar life-threateningdisease.

4. Relaunching of Friday nightprayer. I would like to revision Caroline’s

Friday night prayer meeting. It wouldbe for people who are broken and yethungry for experiencing God in com-munity. It would be a journey onrediscovering joy through open shar-ing in a safe environment with a hugeexpectation that God wants to heal, reconcile, and free His children. If youare interested in being part of a coregroup of people for this meeting, please contact me, as I would like tomeet this Friday, July 14th, 7:00 p.m.,to dream about what is possible. Wewill have an official relaunch of theFriday night prayer in early Septem-ber because we will be traveling up toMA for about a month in late July.

Finally, I want to thank everyonefor your prayers and generosity. Wefeel very loved and supported. I can’timagine what it would be like withoutthe body of Christ surrounding us.

Bless you,Michael and the kids
