TACOMA, WAAll the players who attended the first McDermott tour stop at City Lights inTacoma, WA, October 4-5, 2003 had a great time. The stop was billed asa small table 9-ball event and was a warm up for the BCA players whowould be attending the WBPPA regionals later in October.Players came from both Washington and Oregon to play in this event. Thefinals came down to Stan Tournageau and Rich Geiler. It was doubleelimination and looked as though Rich was going to take the event in thesecond match when he jumped out to a 6-3 lead. Then Stan came backand won four games 6-7. The match went hill-hill and was hard foughtbefore Stan came out victorious.City Lights would also like to congratulate Frankie Rocha for is excellentplay. Frankie’s game has improved over the last couple of years and his3rd place showing here was proof of that.

McDERMOTT CUE PROMISES MOREFrom: Steve SuhmMENOMONEE FALLS, WI. – October 28, 2003: McDermott Cue ManufacturingInc. is promising to have the strongest warranty in the cue industry. The new promisewill help protect buyers against a pool cue’s worst enemy, warpage.Since 1994, McDermott has offered their customers a limited lifetime warrantyagainst defects and workmanship. While this warranty has saved pool enthusiastsin the past, it still did not protect buyers from warpage. The chances of a pool cue warping are effected by many variables such as moisturecontent, dramatic changes in temperature, stress from the manufacturing process, wood aging, and even the cue’s design. McDermott takes many steps to reducethe chances of warpage in their cues. Such steps include keeping the productionfacility climate controlled, putting strict guidelines on vendor’s wood, taking additionalcuts when turning down dowels, sealing finished products in air tight packaging, and much more.“We use the highest quality wood and take every possible precaution to make sureour cues don’t warp. We feel our standards and our quality to be the best in theindustry and want to prove it by doing something nobody else is doing – giving alifetime warranty against not only defects in the cue, but also a lifetime warrantyagainst warpage.” says McDermott President Claude Napier. Below is the exactwording of the new warranty. The McDermott Promise – “A lifetime warranty* against warpage and defects”*McDermott Cue Manufacturing will warrant this pool cue to be free from defects inmaterial and workmanship, including warpage, for the entire lifetime of the cue. Thewarranty applies to all parts but excludes normal wear on replaceable items suchas: the tip, the finish, and the wrap. This warranty is non- transferable and coversonly the original owner. If your cue has a defect covered by this warranty, McDermottCue will either repair or replace your cue, at our option, without charge, provided theclaim is accompanied by a copy of the original sales receipt from an authorizedMcDermott Dealer. At the sole discretion of McDermott Cue, this warranty may bevoid if the cue has been damaged by abuse or mishandling. See your authorizedMcDermott Dealer for shaft care products that will enhance the beauty andperformance of your cue for a lifetime. The new warranty will be appearing at www.mcdermottcue.com and on the new2004 McDermott Cue catalog and covers all future McDermott cues and all McDermottcues currently in circulation.McDermott Cue Manufacturing Inc. of Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin is the leadingmanufacturer of high-quality two-piece billiard cues. This month’s artist shot is from theprop/novelty/special arts disciplineand has a degree of difficulty,(DOD) of 8.You may choose either C or Fpocket on this shot. To set theshot up place an object ball on thefoot spot. The cue ball is in handanywhere behind the head string. The objective of this shot is to shootthe cue ball one handed jacked up(no rail or bridge allowed) to theobject ball on the foot spot. Makethe object ball in either pocket C or

F. Unless obvious from cueball placement shooter mustdesignate which pocket the objectball will be made in. There is nopenalty for scratching. Here are acouple of tips to aid you in makingthis shot. Hold your cue very closeto the balance point so it stays levelas you come down to shot this shot.Align the tip on the cue ball to hit thecue ball along it’s vertical axis, (noEnglish), and use one tip of high.Don’t stroke this shot in mid air, justcome forward with your cue. When

practicing this shot, align the cueball to the object ball for a half ballaim. To do this put a ghost ballwhere the cue ball will be uponcontact of the ball on the foot spot.Of course align the ghost ball andobject ball to be made in the fullopening of the pocket. With yourcue ball aligned for a half ball aimyou now can use the center of yourshaft as an aiming device. Aim thecenter of your shaft to the farthestoutside edge of the object ballopposite the side of the pocket you

wish to cut the ball into. This shottakes steady nerves. I made thisshot on my first attempt at therecent U.S. Open Artist PoolChampionship at Accu-Billiards inNew Bedford, Mass.If you haven’t heard, StefanoPelinga won the event and MikeMassey finished second. Good luckon this one! Next month’s artisticshot will be from the draw disciplineand have a DOD of 9.

The Right WordsBy: Bob Jewett of the SFBA

Bob Jewett

San Francisco Billiard Academy

During a recent lesson, I noticed that my studenthad a puzzled look. Backtracking a short ways, Idiscovered that I had used the word “draw” withoutbothering to make sure that its meaning was clear.Unfortunately, even among serious pool playersthere is often confusion about the terms used todescribe what’s happening on the table. Here aresome pool words and how I use them. Lets startwith the parts of the stick. I’ll try to avoid gettingtoo technical.Tip — that leather thingie on the front of the stickthat actually contacts the ball. Tips are usuallymade from leather, but one company has tried verytough plastic, and some jump cues come withphenolic (hard plastic) tips. Some leather tips are“backed” which means there is a thin fiber waferglued to the back of the leather that is glued ontothe stick, and such tips are especially

recommended for cues that have ivory ferrules.Ferrule — the usually white part of the stick at the front that the tip is gluedto. Most ferrules are made from hard plastic, but high-end cues oftenhave ivory ferrules. Black fiber, buckhorn and brass are also used, the lastmostly on snooker cues. Ferrules on pool cues are up to an inch long, buton carom and snooker cues they are often about half an inch long. (Moreabout the games of carom and snooker later.) Ferrules come in variousdesigns — with and without screw threads, for example.Shaft — On a jointed cue, the part between the joint and the tip. On ahouse (or one-piece) cue, the front foot or so of the stick that slides overyour bridge (front) hand.

Taper — The cue gets bigger from the tip on back, and there are severalstyles of how quickly this happens. Mostly this applies to jointed cues. The so-called “pro” taper keeps the same diameter over most or all of theshaft that your bridge hand touches — maybe 14 inches — and then itflares out to joint. Some cues start to get larger immediiately from the tip, in what’ called a“conical” taper. If you are getting a custom cue, the maker should offer achoice in this.Joint — In a jointed cue, the screw and its parts that hold the stick together. There are lots of different joint designs, and most of them seem to workfine. Metal to metal, metal to wood, and even wood to wood are available— yes, the screw is made of wood also. Personally, I don’t like designswhere both flat surfaces that touch are metal, but all the rest are fine withme. The various joint designs have many different parts, too many tocover here.Butt — The thick half of the stick.Forearm — This is the part of a jointed cue between the joint and whereyour back hand holds the cue. On fancy cues, this is where most of thefanciness goes. The various types of decoration have their own wholevocabulary, which is more useful to collectors than to players, so we’ll skipit.Wrap and Handle — The part of the cue that your back hand holds. Manyjointed cues have wraps made of string, leather, cork or rubber. “Irishlinen” is the most common kind offered. It’s a kind of string that has flecksof colors which help to hide dirt and such. It’s relatively easy to put on andmaintain. The ultimate in a no-slip grip is offered by a rubber wrap, whichis usually a temporary sleeve that is rolled out on the handle. Avoid nylon

NEW BEDFORD, MAOctober 11 & 12, 2003 Sometimes a less thanstellar beginning in competitionwill inspire certain players toreach deep within for the focusand execution skills necessaryto win the “big one”. In addition,a player that consistentlyfinishes in the top 2 or 3positions of internationalchampionships is due to wearthe “crown of victory” eventually.Stefano Pelinga of Italy hasplayed in “artistic pool” eventssince 2000 under the WPA andESPN umbrellas. He hasmoved from one competitivearena to another in search ofseveral illusive titles, but seemsto maintain his primaryfoundation in Italy as their official Trick ShotChampion. He also adorns the warming lights ofthe ESPN Trick Shot Magic event, having finishedrunner-up to Mike Massey in 2001 and Tom “Dr.Cue” Rossman in 2002. All of that changed on October 11 and 12,2003 at Accu Billiards in New Bedford, MA. The“crusade” of “artistic pool” took a gigantic leapforward with its inaugural US OpenChampionship, as 20 players from 3 continentsand 16 states/provinces and/or countriescascaded through the open doors of “sport andshow”. The “who’s who” list of “artistic pool”superstars was given a “red carpet” treatmentby the Mike Xiarhos family billiard center.Nicknames were required of each player to enticespectator attachment to a favorite and in followingeach 2 player grouping, as they traveled downthe 8-discipline/40 shot-challenge golf coursestyle format together. Dipsy/Doodle…Hustler Bank, withDressing…Just Winging It…Circular Draw…Machine Gun…Resistance Draw…Snap/Crackle/Pop/Jump/Nip/Draw…Trapped andCorner Hooked…Passing Lane…ReverseAround the Wall…Yo-Yo Masse…The Big U.The dips and dives/twists and turns of thesenames would challenge the “best of the best”.Four rounds of competition (2 on day one and 2on day two) would allow each player to take 3attempts at each challenge or score via a specialpoints system. Degrees of difficulty on the 3attempt challenges range from 5 to 11, with a

first attempt make earningmaximum points, 2nd attempt— one point less thanmaximum, and 3rd attempt –two points less than maximum. Following is a recap ofplayer scores in a shortened“leader board” presentation ofsorts. The top 4 players arelisted in order of points earnedcumulatively after eachdiscipline is finished. These“pocket scores” provide youwith the changing playerpositions, as each “artistic pool”skill technique comes tocompletion. In addition, somehighlights of “artistic action andbeauty” are given along theway…with specific mention ofthe “title” champion for each

discipline.Pelinga also earned the prestigious overall “title”of 2003 US Open “Artistic Pool” Champion – a“victory” well deserved!!!Special Note: Sportsmanship award presentedto Tom “Dr. Cue” Rossman (By vote of players) One other point of competitiveaccomplishment should be noted at this time.Andy Segal was in 11th place before the jumpdiscipline, and moved all the way to 4th placewhen the smoke had cleared. This display ofcompetitive spirit and drive is a recurringcharacteristic of the players of “artistic pool” asa whole. Congratulations to each player listedbelow for completing this “artistic pool”professional challenge and exhibiting the imageand demeanor of a champion…one and all!

Special thanks to the Mike Xiarhos family of AccuBilliards, the players, the fans, event staff, sponsors, and GTS Ministries for the wonderfulshow before the awards ceremony. For complete event results/stats/payouts go towww.drcuepromotions.com and click the redball on the home page (The “Artistic Pocket”Newsletter). Editor’s Note: If you didn’t get a chance toread Pat’s article on tipping your cue from lastDecember and January’s issues – here it isagain.I started tipping cues for my Dad, JoeSheehan when I was ten years old, some fifty-four years ago. Dad started tipping cues atthe Brunswick Chicago office in 1918,(hundreds of cues every day) and he hated it.It became my job. 25 c for a tip only, 50 c forpoint and tip and 75 c with a buck horn ferrell.

I did about 20 cues a week and in 1948 that was a lot of money for a fifthgrader.Dad had shown me all he knew and I finished up with a very good-lookingtip. In those days the tips were shaped like a gum drop and you had to beatthem with a hammer to get them to the right size, glue them on, trim them, shape them and burnish the sides with a leather burnisher. The big problemwas the glue. The adhesives were not able to withstand the shock that atip gets.I started with the Hyde glue that you heated in a double boiler. If you tippedcues all day long every day it was great. But I only worked on cues on theweekend. You had to wait a long time for the glue to heat and then it wouldmildew after two weeks and you had to start over mixing and boiling. Then we started using Lepage’s Mucilage glue, easy, but one out of five felloff after one week in play. When the cues come back for retipping therewas no leather stick to the point. Bad sign.Brunswick’s Ku glue was my next try. It was a little better, one in ten afterone week and one in five came back with some leather and one in ten witha top worn down to the point itself. I tipped all of Willie Mosconi’s shaftswhen he came to Portland. He was very fussy about how it was done andI learned a lot from him. Jimmy Caras showed me that a few holes in thetip and point would give the glue a better chance to penetrate and built agreater surface of glue.Brunswick discontinued Ku glue and we were back to square one, Elmer’sglue, Tight bond, Contact cement, none of them worked as well. EastmanKodak came up with a glue for the military to glue circuit boards that broke, back together. A little tube cost Uncle Sam $90. It was the best thing tocome along but besides tips it stuck fingers to tips and fingers to fingers. Itwas also hard to get. Since we covered all of the pool tables on all of themilitary bases, sometimes I could talk one of the Electronic Repair peopleout of a used tube.Shortly, it came out on the under many various names but it was a SuperGlue. Those that were available didn’t work the same. I found the fit had tobe perfect and that wasn’t always the case with a cue tip. After trying allthe glues that didn’t work in the early 1980’s I came across Satalite Cityand their full line of “super” glues. They make three thick nesses, red a thineasy flowing, yellow a thicker slower dry and green a very heavy gap fillingglue. The first step in a successful job is to get both surfaces clean and as flatas possible. Super glue works by the cyanoacrylate chemical attractingmolecules of both surfaces so anything that stands in between will causethe bond to fail. There is a chain of molecules that builds up on the bond. One molecule that grabs the H

2O molecules on each surface and holds

the two surfaces as though they are one. We use a 12” disc sander toclean the ferrule (You probably don’t have one, but a cue top sander atabout $10 from me or others). To clean the tip 80 grit sandpaper on a pieceof glass or on a flat board, with an awl poke a few holes in the tip for addedsurface area.We do a lot of cues for taverns and hand use locations, so to really makea tip stick even if the cue hits the cement floor; we put a drop of GreenSuper T on the ferrule and a drop of Red on the tip and press together atonce. A shot of NCF accelerator to hold in place and slip it into a 6 ft. pipeclamp for 2 minutes. If you miss the bond or the tip is not centered take thetip off and reclean both surfaces. Super glue does not stick well to superglue. If you do stick your fingers together, nail polish remover will free them.If you are just doing a few cues the Yellow glue will give excellent results onits own. Put a drop on the tip and the ferrule and press together with yourthumb. Hold it for about 30 seconds then put the cue butt up resting on thetip. The more glue you put on the longer you have to hold them together. Now you are ready to trim the tip. We have a special jig on the 12” sanderbut a very sharp knife works very well. Invert the cue on a piece of wood;make a small cut following the ferrule pushing forward and downward.Taking tiny bites turn the cue into the knife and trim the tip as flush aspossible with out making it cone shaped. Finish with fine sandpaper. On a

The Pool Whisperer . . . . Lance McGill: Ongoing EducationSend your questions about pool and game situations to: [email protected]

McGills Billiard Academy - 1306 NW Hoyt St B1 - Portland, OR 97209

(McGill continued on page 23)

Each time that I begin an article, thefirst thing that crosses my mind iswhat’s goin’ on in the world awayfrom pool. And each of those timesI find that whatever the outstandingevent is, it somehow, and easily, relates directly to pool. This monthit was the recall election inCalifornia; and I most certainlythought there would be no way toinclude that in this text. Well, thatlasted for less time than it took tocomplete the thought. One ruler ofBavaria - Maximilian II. Lost hiskingdom in 1704. Yup...he gothimself recalled. He was deposedfor losing $3,600,000.00. And helost it playing billiards. Sopool cost him $3,600,000AND a kingdom. Maybe hethought that because all ofhis subjects in the kingdomwere shaped like“backers,” that’s what theywere. (I’d like to do anarticle on backers so if youhave an interest in thatplease let me know.)Annnnd, here we go. Tothe mail.A lot of confusion andfrustration seems to comefrom players that play onvarious sized tables. I’ll putas much of a foundationhere for you as I can. Somuch comes to mind thatI’m gonna sit down hereand discuss it now in theschool with Mike (who asked inperson) and tape the answer. I’lltype it in here word for word: “first, let’s agree that most of you go tothe next table size and continueplaying as you normally would. That, simply won’t work. At this point, I’llfocus only on 9 foot tables and 7foot bar boxes. That’s the most

Recall vs. Billiardscommon case forwhat we’rediscussing. FIRST,MOVING FROMTHE 9 FOOTER TOTHE BARBOX: 1).Players moving tothe barbox will makemore balls. 2).They’ll also playworse patterns andmuch worse positionthan they’re used to.3). Most balls are played to thecorner pockets; when you play ona 9 footer you play to the outside ofthe corner pocket. If you do this onthe barbox, you lessen the size of

your target by HALF! Play thebarbox to the inside of the cornerpockets. This is all of course, forthe lovely speed. If you’re hittingfirmly, aim for the center and favorthe inside (SEE DIAGRAM #1). 4).Avoid the side pockets while you’renew at the barbox ..... you ain’tgonna play’em well (maybe not

even later.) 5). Whenfaced with an angleto the side or moreangle to the corner, choose the corner.Often you’ll see howthat will naturally helpwith cueball positionin a lot of situations. The position andpatterns will bedifferent becausethere’s so much less

room. The size difference is 16square feet! Imagine a cueballsitting in the middle of a tile floor 4feet by 4 feet; that’s how muchroom to move around you’re losing.

I mention patterns because withinthis limited amount of space, youhave to be more specific with thestone. That means a pattern thatwould work 100 times on the 9footer may never work on thebarbox. “Never” is lousy odds. Tosupport this even more I’ll tell youthese 2 things: if I could only bet on

1 game of pool and didn’t know whatthe game would be; just have tochoose a player- I would’ve chosenLuther Lassiter. He played on the(10) and the 9 footers. He had athing he called “getting his cueball”meaning that even though he wasplaying on the 9 footer, he wouldpractice on the 8 footer. The cueballis harder to control because of the8 and a half square feet ofdifference and still maintains nearlythe feel of a 9 footer as far as shotmaking. I include this to support andillustrate that even the best knowhow effective the differences are. (Ishould mention that the reason theshot making remains nearly the

same is that a pro is playingshots that are routinely 18-24 inches long whether it’s a9 or and 8 footer.)Now: Moving from the barboxTO THE 9 FOOTER: 1). Playto the outside of the cornerpockets. 2). You can makemore use of the side pocketsand, do so sparingly.Especially in 9 ball, a lot ofrun stoppers are played intothe side pockets. 3). Playshorter (length of shot)cueball position and movemore toward defense in youroverall strategy. Differenttables REQUIRE differentstyles of play. They alsorequire different skill sets. Ifwe eliminate Jim Rempe

and Allison, we readily see that thetransition from a snooker table tothe 9 footer isn’t easy. Snookerrequires far less speed and jumpshots aren’t even allowed.Cueballs are only fueled with a lotof english when playing safe and, there’s no power break shot in

Second Chance Cash

for Mr ChandlerBy: Clay Skidmore

Spokane, WAWith the cool autumn air, and football on the airwaves, that can mean onlyone thing, “It’s pool tournament season.” Kick off was Labor Day weekendand September 27th-28th was the Second Chance Tournament. This eventwas available to any player that finished out of the money in the open, orany established “B” player. With 43 players, it was a good mix of both “A”and “B” level play.Scott Chandler finally knocked the door down to become my SecondChance Tournament winner. Scott started the event with a 9-8 win overObaid and went on to defeat Mark Johns 9-5, Deby Welfringer 9-5, DennisBrown 9-4 and Felipie Claro 9-3. Hooking up with Nick Lopez in the winnersfinal, Scott took his only loss of the event. On the B-side Scott played TylerLuce to a hill/hill battle and prevailed to move into the finals. With a tworace final Scott had a lot of work ahead of him. The scores from the finaltwo matches didn’t get recorded, but Scott came out on top to notch hisfirst official win at McQ’s. Cerrie Bird morning person at the Union can warm you with her

by: Pat SheehanIf you guys out there haven’t noticed the game of pool has changed a greatdeal in the past fewyears. I’m not talkingabout ball-in-hand or rollout, but the number ofwomen playing pool andthe number ofsuccessful femaleowners and managers.Merle Humphreys ofO.P.A.L. the local A.P.A.league told me that 1/3of the almost 10,000members are women. He and his wife, Boomer, have created one of themost successful leaguedivisions west of theMississippi and Boomerwas the every day drivethat makes OPAL work. This month we will seethe Women’s ProChampionships playedat Chinook WindsCasino November 19-23.I had the opportunity tointerview one of thesuccess stories, IrenePavlatos, the manager ofthe Greek Village andWest Union Sports Pub. It took four months to get a chance to sit and talkwith Irene. She has both bars to manage, lots of quarters and bills to count, checks to write and decisions. She is also a single mom with two girls anda boy to raise plus she is taking Pre-Med courses at P.C.C. and is an “A”student. Her father, Andy Pavlatos, bought out a bikers bar with a reputation for

drugs called the Ranchito Innin 1971. It took a long time tochange the place around andbuild a clientel that stillcomes in. Andy called thenew place the Greek Villageand has the best Gyros andSoulki sandwiches in town. There is of course a fullmenu. In 1988, Irene startedworking in the Villageswinging a mop, fill ingketchup jars, doing the booksand learning the business. By1994, Andy was confidentenough in Irene that heopened another location andthe Happy Greek InternationalDeli was born with flags of allnations flapping in the breezeand a plant growing in everycorner. The place was cleanand light. The only thing itlacked was cash flow. TheVillage had spoiled Andy and

Irene. They missed counting the quarters out of the pool tables and theprice of beer. In 1996 the Deli became the West Union Sports Pub, 5340NW 185th in the small area called West Union. Now there are apartmentsand condos all over the area. The little clearing where the Deli stood is ashopping mall so in 2002 the bar and restaurant expanded and three morepool tables were added in a new Recreation Room. The first time I played pool in the village was for the finals of the Bud LiteLeague. Our team played there and at Joe Ringo’s Rococo’s. I recall thatthe tables at the Village were awful. The cloth was loose, tables not leveland 2 3/8” cue balls. We got through to the semi finals. I was glad that weended there for the last ball fell at about 4 a.m. Three years later, Irenecalled me out to help. We were going to cover two tables and shampootwo others. The bed cloth was so loose that we had to recover the fourtables. Irene wanted not to continue hearing complaints and wanted thetables to play well. I guess we did a good job because we have been doing

Greek Village and West Union Sports Pubthe Greek Village ever since. The next time we were called to the WestUnion Pub and have been “The Men of the Cloth” there.Three years ago they added hard liquor to both places, so I had to askIrene how it changed the operation. Of course it added revenue, but Irenetold me that it changed the demographics of the patrons. More and morewomen started coming in. Irene thought that the girls favored the fanciercocktails and felt it was more sophisticated to sip a mixed drink than slosha glass of suds. I had a chance meeting with the ex-Governor of Oregon,Barbara Roberts, and asked her opinion. For most of her adult life Barbarafelt uneasy going into a tavern but was at ease where food and hard liquorwere served. She has been acustomer atKay’s Lounge onMilwaukie andBybee like mywife and I formany years. TheG o v e r n o rseldom orders adrink but enjoysthe gang and thefood.Pool leagueshave picked upat both locations, and Irene has women playing both at the Village and theUnion. Irene is slowly changing the décor, slowly but surely at both locations. At the Village the entire ceiling is covered with personal greetings on eachtile. For $5 you can buy a tile but it must be done in style. Irene furnishesthe paint, brushes and artistic ideas. She is planning a tap handle museumbut the friendliness of the staff is what brings the customers back to bothlocations. Most of the group has been there for years. Cerri Bird has beenthe Morning Star at the Union since the pool tables first arrived eight yearsago. Orges Pgetri is a cook from Albania who has a great sense of humor. It’s a fun place to be. OTB

TONY ‘EVER READY’ REYESSTOOD FIVE SIX AND WEIGHEDabout hundred-thirty pounds. Trueto his name, he zipped around thetable like a motorized toy car, hardlystopping to take a breath.Articulately, he pocketed one ballafter another, smiling, grinning, shaking his head, studying, thenshooting again.“A real piece of work,” I saidadmirably. “Little guy’s a smoothrunning machine. Nothing bothershim. His whole focus is on thegame, as if nothing else exists.” Wewere on the third floor railing, eyeingthe action down on the Galleriaatrium’s first floor.“Impressive,” Elizabeth saidrespectfully. “And he isentertaining,” she said. “Like a littlebuzz saw. And his intensity remindsme of someone else I know, but ina different way.”“Uh huh.”She grabbed my elbow. “Well, Mr.Keating,” she said proudly, “seeingthat you’ve just made the finals, there’s only room for one otherplayer. Are you hoping it’s EverReady?”I gazed down to the main floor andwatched. Two Brunswick GoldCrown nine-foot tables had beenplaced in the center of the atrium.Originally, sixteen tables had beenbrought in and now after five daysof competition, the tables weredown to two.“Quite a place,” she cooed, “it’sbeen a great tournament.” Gawkingdown on the semi-final match, shesaid, “the finals begin in less thanthree hours.” She locked her handsaround my elbow and looked intomy eyes lovingly.

Nod. I blew out a largebreath of air and added, “the twosemifinalists play for third place, then immediately thereafter thefinals start.”“Are you surprised you made it tothe finals?” She leaned in closer. Her lips only inches away from mine.

“Yes and no,” I said. “In thebeginning I felt like I was treadingwater, just trying to stay alive. Thenwhen I had the momentum, I startedbelieving in the possibilities.”Pause. “Elizabeth?”“Yeah?” Her head perked up as sheeyed me directly.Nervous. I felt myself wanting tostammer, “Would you marry me?”Her eyes swelled the size of

jawbreakers, then narrowed as shestaggered back a step and said,“wha. . . what?”“Know this comes as a surprise . ..but I love you and want to bemarried to you.”She leaned back, fluttered her eyesand stared at me with a smile thatwas somewhat unsure, wonderingif I was serious.“Are you proposing to me, CarterKeating?” She asked. The smilestayed, still hopeful, but still unsure.“Yes,” I said assertively, holding herelbows, eyeing her straight on, “willyou marry me?”She kept staring. She didn’t say aword. If she was speechless, Icouldn’t tell, only that I had all of herattention. On the main floor, Ever Ready musthave made a spectacular gamewinning shot. A cheer emanated

up through the atrium. I glanceddown over the balcony and sawEver Ready congratulated by hisopponent.“Looks like Ever Ready’s the man,”I said.Elizabeth shook her head and stoodthere eyeing me without sayinganything.Leaning in, I kissed her cheek lightlyand said, “Know you might say noand if you do I’ll understand . . . andI promise to give you time to thinkabout it.”She flitted her head, blinked rapidlyand said, “I – I”“Don’t’ need an answer now,” I said.“I love you, Carter, you know that,”she stammered.

HOW TO PROTECT AND MAINTAINYOUR POOL CUE

By: Craig W. Rittel owner of Full Splice Billiards10606 Bridgeport Way S.W., Lakewood, Washington 98499

The most important single factorshort of learning to stroke the cueball in the game of pool is cuemaintenance.

Hello, over the last two months I have tried to explain the process of buyinga pool cue and the difference in cue construction and design. This monthI want to cover a subject that I think is the most important single factor

short of learning to stroke the cue ballin the game of pool, and that’s cuemaintenance.Far too many people spend large sumsof money to buy very high quality poolcues and through neglect allow theirprize possession to become aworthless warped piece of wood.Almost on a weekly basis someonebrings in a cue stick that is in need ofserious help. The main reason thisproblem occurs is information about

cue maintenance is not readily available and many people who areknowledgeable about the subject want to keep their knowledge tothemselves. The first step in cue Maintenance is a good case. The case should be ahard case; most soft cases offer little or no protection of your cue stick. Inaddition to this I do not recommend any hard case were the cue is slideinto a tube that seals when the cues butt is fully inserted. My thoughtsbehind this are that after playing for a while most players’ hands will sweatto some degree, this will cause the cues wrap to become damp. In manycases people only use their cue once or twice a week, so this damp wrapwill sit in a sealed dark environment until it is used again. Depending on thetemperature where the cue is stored mold and mildew may make a homein your case, which will have long lasting effects on your cues finish, wrap, and a moisture build up inside your case may reek havoc on your cuesshaft. Last about cases, keep them clean. I can not tell you how manytimes I have seen people finish their game and break down their cue andjust shove it back in their case. There are too problems that are created bydoing this; One, chalk is a highly abrasive substance which will damagethe finish of a cue stick over time if the is not wiped off before being placed

back in its case. This can be accomplished with a Very Very lightly dampclean cloth, after this process the cue should again be wiped with a drycloth before being placed back in its case; Two, always wipe the chalk offyour tip before placing back in your case. If you do not wipe off the tip youcontaminate the inside of your case with chalk build-up. Long term this willdamage your cue and you cues shaft will always have that sticky feelingfrom all the dirt and grim built up in your case. The Next step in cue Maintenance is care of your cues shaft. The cuesshaft and tip are the most important parts of a cue. These two cuecomponents will affect the way a cue plays more than any other part ofyour cue. These are also the most abused parts of many player cue sticks. The following are tested methods that will allow you to maintain your cuesshaft and tip in between professional tune-ups of your cues shaft.1. Never use any abrasive substance on your cues shaft.

a. The first step in keeping your cues shaft clean, is to keep yourhands clean when playing pool. Most places we play do not properly cleantheir tables, this is easily seen when you look at the palm of your hand andsee the blue stain after playing on a pool table for a short time. All the dirtand other substances also are smeared on the shaft of your cue unlessyou repeatedly wash your hands.

b. When the shaft of your cue becomes sticky to the touch duringyour stroke it is necessary to clean it. Cleaning your cues shaft is not acomplicated process. All you need are two pieces of clean cloth, and apiece of clean unlettered cardboard. First take one of the pieces of clothand dampen it very slightly. Wipe it up and down the stroke area of yourcues shaft. In mostcases it will turn bluefrom chalk dust andother dirt that havebuilt-up on the shaft.Immediately afterwiping your cues shaftdown, wipe it down asecond time with a dry clean cloth. After wiping the shaft down with the drycloth burnish the shaft with a piece of clean writing free plain cardboard. Todo this wrap the cardboard around the cues shaft tightly, then slide it upand down the cues shaft very fast until the shaft and the cardboard becomevery warm/hot to the touch. This process will do two things, first it willcompletely dry the shaft due to the friction produced in the above step.Second it will polish the shaft making the finish very smooth without sandingthe cues shaft. The only other item I would recommend for use on youshaft are the Micro Burnishing films produced by Q Smooth or othercompanies. These Micro Burnishing Films while they are abrasive materials, they are so fine that if used according to the instruction on the packagethey will do no harm to the shaft of your cue.2. Never remove the chalk on the tip of your cue by rubbing it onthe floor of your favorite establishment when you are through playing.

a. This is a common sight that is seen throughout, bars, poolhalls, and other establishments where pool tables are present. I would goas far as to say that either most of us have seen someone do this or wehave done it ourselves. There are two reasons I would not recommendthis to anyone, first and most important is it’s disrespectful to the owner ofthe establishment, and second the carpeting on the floor in most bars andpool halls is so filthy that by wiping off the cues tip on it you are also smearingmany unknown substances on your cue tip which may in-turn cause yourtip not to support your game when you need it to most.3. Always keep your cues tip properly maintained.

a. Taking care of your cues tip is not a difficult process. First, keepthe tip in the approximate roundness of either a Nickel or Dime. Second, trim off any over hanging portion of your tip that passes or overhangs thecues ferrule. After you trim off portions of over hanging tip, take a piece ofmasking tape and place it around your cues ferrule where it meets thecues tip this is to protect the cues ferrule during the next step. Then use150 grit sand paper on the tips edge in a circular motion until the tips edgeis smooth. Check the masking tape for tears, and if torn replace it with afresh piece before continuing. Next repeat the sanding step with 320 gritpaper, and finally 600 grit paper to finish the job. Then remove the maskingtape from the ferrule and slightly wet the edge of the cue tip that was justsanded. Last again use a piece of clean cardboard and burnish the edgeof the cues tip until is brown and shiny.4. Cleaning and care of the cues butt.

a. To clean the cues butt again I recommend, a Very Very dampcloth for wiping down the finish on the cues butt. After removing any dirt orgrime from the cues butt it should be waxed with a high quality CarnaubaWax that is clear coat finish safe. This will protect your cues finish from

snooker. (The break is nearlyidentical to our 14.1 break.) On 9footers, everything is the exactopposite. So snooker players don’thave the stroke necessary todominate us and we don’t have thetouch needed to dominate them in

their game. The differences in whatis required is so large that it’sgenerally conceded that if achampion from 9 foot table play, went to Sheffield, England (wherethe championships are played) anddid nothing but play snooker for ayear, that player wouldn’t even endup in the top 100. So whicheverequipment you’re good on, expectto be less skilled on the other.” [endof tape.]The next question is about gettinga 2 rail hit getting out of a safety. Most players seem to have 1 railand 3 rail systems that work forthem. On every skill level the

question seems to be the 2 rail hit. This brings up a point that it’smandatory for you to know andyou’re probably walking aroundwithout. 1 rail, 2 rail, and 3 rail, systems translate to all table sizes, from barbox to 12 footers. They’ll

WORK EQUALLY on every tablesize. WHAT WILL CHANGE IS THECONTACT POINT ON THE 4TH

RAIL! The system I’ve chosen togive you, is known as CUEBALL“POSITION 5”. I chose this onebecause it can also be utilized asthe 3 rail hit it was meant for andcan be extended to make a 4 or 5rail hit. Here’s what we know: whenthe cueball sits in what we wouldcall a corner position and now arecalling position 5——in shooting the3 railer- the first rail hit and the thirdrail hit, will add up to 5. (that’s the 2long rails) So, from this position, if,

good cue start with 240 sandpaper spinning the cue touching only theferrule and tip working finer grits to 600. Clean the shaft with the Sheehan’sSuper Cue Stick Cleaner and sand with 1000 grit or R & S plastic abrasives. Now round the tip by folding a sheet of 60 grit paper in thirds and cup inyour hand pulling toward you at a 300 angle to round to the shape of anickel. Sheehan’s tip topper will make the job quicker and give perfectresults $10.Now comes the part that makes the tip look like a pro did it. Burnish thesidewall with a piece of leather (we make a form fitting burnisher shapedto fit a cue $6) by wetting the topsides with water or a little spit. Bring theleather downward and squeezing, give the tip about 50 strokes or until itshines. This way the tip will not mushroom.Since we have cleaned and sanded the shaft you must now seal it or thesand particles from the cue chalk will work its way into the pores of thewood. I use a special blend of French polishing lacquer adding just a dropor two on a rag and buffing till it squeaks. You’re now ready to do greatharm to your opponent at the table.

distance. Holding Linda Jo’s hand,he dragged her hurriedly down thecorridor. “They’re calling for you.Something ‘bout going over therules.”

Elizabeth and I stared atthem both without saying anything.

“Heard they found your car,”Linda Jo said rhetorically, breathinghard as they approached us.

“Kids out on a joy ride,” Isaid as they joined us, “no damage, nothing taken.”“Like I said, Keating,” Joe growled,“Born in friggin’ tree, oughta go livein the zoo with the rest of themprimates.”

“Joe!” Linda Jo scolded,“He’s getting ready to play in thefinals.”

“Aw, baby, man’s got ice inhis veins. Trust me, nothing rilesthis guy.”

I smirked.Elizabeth laughed, “What a

combination. I’ve alwayswondered,” she said grinning, “whatthe Lord had in mind when he putthe two of you together.”“Insanity for the rest of us,” LindaJo teased, looking straight atElizabeth. Her cheeks reddened asa scintillating smile washed acrossher face. “What happened to you,”she asked Elizabeth, “You look likeyou’re full of it.”

Elizabeth breathed in deep, fluttered her eyes and smiled likethe Chesire Cat.

I sighed. The thought of

playing Ever Ready paled incomparison.EVER READY, FLOATEDAROUND THE TABLE LIKE ABUTTERFLY, filled with energy. Hisintensity reminded me of MichaelJordan eyeing a three pointer in theseventh game of the playoffs.Every shot had his completeattention.“Little Dork don’t miss,” Joeelaborated.

Nod.“Cocky, too,” Joe added.

Ever Ready leaned into the shotand drilled the eight into the cornerpocket. “How many rack’s that,Carter?” Joe asked.

Shrug.“Four in a row without

missing?”Nod.“Dang, ya haven’t even had

a shot yet . . .”Sighing heavily, I turned to

Joe directly and muttered, “hedoesn’t know me, Joe. He hasnothing to be afraid of . . . nointimidation. Part of the game hedoesn’t have to concern himselfwith.”

“Well whyn’t I go over n’ tellhim who he’s playing.

“Joe, zip it up,” I repliedsoftly, holding back a small smile.“But –““Zip it up, Joe,” I said turning away, grabbing my ice tea, taking a sip.

to get out of a safety, you want to hit a ball that sits at diamond 3, (SEEDIAGRAM #2) you know to hit 2 because diamond 2 and diamond 3 addup to 5. Play with this several ways. It can be the foundation for 2, 3, 4, 5,and 6 or 7 rail hits. Don’t stop looking until you see it.NOW— a bag of gold nuggets. Not even as joke. Each thing that followscan improve your game while you’re reading.SHARON L asks about how to choose between 2 difficult “jack-up” shotsas in DIAGRAM #3. Take each shot to near completion go through

everything except the contact stroke. Stand behind the shot, approach andget into your stance. Begin actual warm-up strokes and go through half ofthe contact stroke. Do this again with the other option. Then choose fromwhatever you experienced which of the shots feels best to you. Also beprepared for your opponent to interrupt with, “What’re you callin?” This isguaranteed to happen because they don’t see anyone take this time andcare.Randy wants to know why the banking system he learned for simple banks,“isn’t reliable?” LOOK, the angle in equaling the angle out thing is a myth. It’s MISINFORMATION so stop using it! If the balls fell as they do in thosediagrams and the cloth remained new for the remainder of your life...thatmythical system would be perfect. Oh, I forgot....you’d also have to shoota speed that may or may not reach the pocket. I can give you a guideline touse if you started with this system when you learned (simple) banks. Eitheradd one-third or two thirds of a diamond to the point the equal in equal outsystem leads you to. You’ll find that more of your banks go in immediately. The least it’ll do is change and correct your understanding of those banks.Remember that it’s a guideline and so, can be guaranteed to work assuch. I think that the more skilled you are the more you’ll be surprised withthis one. Also remember that slow speed banks are affected by the clothand worn cloth shortens the angle. For the emailer (no name was attached), that asked about ways to relievepressure when you draw that monster local champion: touch your teethtogether as lightly as you can. Even lighter that that. See how close youcan get them without them actually touching. You’ll reject this at first and ITABSOLUTELY WORKS!For Chef Adam in Houston and the others of you that asked about throw:for frozen or nearly frozen balls- you can expect to throw a ball one inch forevery foot of distance it travels. And the often asked question this time from Sheila, who’s become a regular:the system of hitting the frozen object ball and rail at the same time worksabout half of the time. Why is that? I’ve read it so many places?! Anothermyth—first, visualize the width of a credit card. Then hit that much beforethe object ball. For Justin who asked how he can add more speed when running an objectball down the long rail? He says he can make nearly all of them until heneeds speed for position on the next ball. You’ll find that jacking up eitherthe slightest or a little bit will gain the result you’re after. For the position questions including Amanda’s, and for most of you to beable to help improve your position play right now I can tell you this onething. Play in such a way that you’re always working on the third objectball. The angle you want to have on the third ball dictates how you play thefirst ball. Continue through your racks this way.Someone asked about buying a cue and not being allowed to chalk it up. Isuggest that sellers stock some tan chalk and buyers go in with tan chalkand the shop owner may learn something from you. The tan is easy toremove and blends in not only with the tip color- it also blends in on theshaft! Such a simple solution to be so under utilized.A lot of you say that practice is boring no matter how you vary your work. AllI’ll say in that regard is this simple statement. The road to mastery passesdirectly through boredom. To get to mastery you must be able to get throughboredom. Like life, pool is mind over matter; if you don’t mind, then winningwon’t matter. Do the work. mcgill

abrasion caused by chalk dust, and from minorbumps that cues sometime get when being used.I recommend this cleaning on a monthly basisat a minimum if you regularly use a certain cue.5. Never leave your cue anywhere where itis exposed to major temperature changes fora long period of time.

a. The worst place to keep your cue isthe trunk of your car. This is the one place inyour car that is not temperature controlled. Duringa summer day the trunk can reach temperaturesof 120 degrees or more, and at night thetemperature can drop 30 to 40 degrees in thatsame trunk in no more than a few hours afterthe sun has gone down. These rapid shifts intemperature will cause swelling and expansionwherever unlike materials are joined. Thistemperature shift will also effect inlays under thecues finish in the same manner. Long term thisexpansion and swelling will crack the cues finishand in severe cases even cause cracks to formin the cues forearm and butt. This is the numberone form of damage seen, and it is the easiestto prevent by using a little thought when storingyour most prized possession.

Cue Maintenance (continued from page 22)

Another common problem encountered from thisform of abuse is a warped shaft. A cues shaftwill warp very easily if it is exposed to heat longterm. This also is easily avoided by giving yourcue the treatment is deserves. If you follow these simple procedures outlinedhere, many common problems can be resolvedwith little or no effort. It will also increase yourconfidence in your equipment which can only havea positive effect on your game overall. Last, knowone will take care of your equipment better thanyou, the pride and professional touch only youcan add to your equipment is a very importantstep in taking you pool game to the next level.

and similar raps unless you want your back hand to slip during the stroke.Butt Plate — The part at the end of the stick that you will be holding if you’re stretched way out overthe table to reach a distant cue ball. Often this is made of tough plastic to survive frequent encounterswith the floor. Fancy sticks will also have a Butt Sleeve which is some added decoration betweenthe end of the wrap and the Butt Plate. House sticks (also known as Wallabushkas, denoting wherethey’re kept) usually have neither and simply end in solid wood.Bumper — The rubber part that lets the stick bounce a little if you drop it on the floor.Balance — The point along the cue, usually in the forearm, where you can teeter-totter the cuehorizontally on a finger, measured from the bumper. A typical balance is 19 inches, and if you get acustom made cue, this is one of the things that you may want to specify. I find that if I’m using ahouse cue to break at eight or nine ball, the balance is more important to me than weight.Diameter — This nearly always refers to the diameter of the ferrule and tip, and is given in millimeters

because all thegood tips usedto be made inFrance, thehome of themetric system.A commondiameter is

about 13mm, but I like something smaller, down around 11.5mm. Experiment for yourself. Oncustom cues, you can also specify the diameter of the butt, which is usually given in inches tocomplicate things.Weight — You will find the weights of house cues in ounces stamped on the butt, and it might rangefrom 17 to 21. Often the number is correct within one or two ounces. Some players are verysensitive to the weight of the stick. I recommend that you try a wide range of weights before makingany buying decisions.Stiffness — The shaft bends to the side when it strikes the cue ball off-center. It’s not yet clear thatthis has a major effect on what you can get the cue ball to do, but it certainly changes how the stickfeels in your hands. Some like flexible and some don’t.Squirt — This was mentioned in an earlier column on the perils of using English. This is also calleddeflection and is a property of the front part of the shaft, mostly. When you apply side spin, the cueball moves off to the side some, at an angle that depends on how much spin you’re applying. Morespin, more squirt. The important point here is that different shafts have different amounts of squirt, and if you try to use English with a shaft that squirts differently than what you’re used to, your gamewill be a series of very unpleasant surprises, culminating in the loss of your room rent. Avoid thisoutcome. In future columns, I’ll cover other terms used for other parts of equipment and in play — but not nexttime, we’ve had enough vocabulary lesson for a while.

Resurrection - Part 8 (continued from page 27)

Resurrection continues . . .

Out of the corner of my eye, Joe slumped downin his chair and looked like a puppy that’d justbeen scolded.I strolled over to the table, grabbed the rack andthumbed in the balls. The promoters had thetemperature down to keep the new Simonis clothfree of humidity. My hands felt stiff. I hoped they’dloosen up by my first shot. My chance wouldcome, I knew that.Reyes sauntered over to me as I lifted the woodenrack away from the ball. A strong piercingcologne telegraphed his nearness. He took thepalm of his hand, hovered it over the rack for amoment and eyed the balls closely. Glaring atme superciliously, he raised his eyebrows, smirked arrogantly and prowled confidently backto the foot string for the break. Playing to thecrowd, he held his cue up like a torch. Thegladiator in the arena celebrating his victory. Thecrowd noise elevated raucously. He grinned sobrightly that he looked like a light bulb. I laughed.Ever Ready.A fan yelled words of encouragement and wavedfrom the second floor balcony. Ever Readygrinned wide, glanced up and waved backproudly. Around the balcony, the crowdoverlooking the atrium applauded loudly. EverReady spread his arms and noddedceremoniously.I sat there expressionless. Taking in a largebreath, I reached for my tea and took in anotherdrink.“Time!” I yelled, pushing out of my seat.Handing my stick to Joe, I said, “guard this, Joe.Be back in a while.”Ever Ready glared instantly at the referee whosat on a barstool fifteen feet back from the GoldCrown. The ref shrugged, and gesturedhelplessly with his hands. “Finals match, EverReady.” Each player,” he said assertively, “cantake at least one ten minute break.” He glaredback at Ever Ready and said, “It’s in the notes Igave you.”Ever Ready shrugged then sat down in his chair

with a scowl on his face. The crowd murmured.I threaded myself through the crowd withoutsaying anything. After a stop at the urinal, I washed my face andhands, relaxed for a moment, then turned quicklyand hurried to the exit doors. Taking theWestheimer entrance, I stepped outside andbreathed in the fresh air. The warm afternoonsun breathed down on me gently.“Car, sir?” the concierge for the Westin Hoteloffered openly, glancing my way. He waitedpatiently for the next guest to arrive.I shook my head.“How you doing in there?” he queried.I canted my head. The question surprised me.He didn’t look like he had time to watch a poolmatch on a Saturday afternoon. I eyed my watch.Four minutes to go.“The pool tournament?”Nod.“Down four games.”He laughed. A low gentle jolly laugh. “Son,” hesaid, “Watched you play at the hub ‘bout ten yearsago.” A smile spread across his face andaccentuated his cheeks. “Doc Keating, TheSurgeon, that’s who you are.” He extended hishand, “always liked your game young fella, especially since Charley Sturgis had a hand in it‘for he died.”“You knew Charley Sturgis?”Nod. “Boss Rickling,” he stated, “howya doingon time?”“Gotta be back in about two and half minutes,Boss,” I said, wide eyed. “Understand.” Pause.“By the way, “you run a couple racks, EverReady’ll fold like an accordion. Especially againsta disciplined mind like yours.” I stared at him. What he said sounded muchlike what Charley Sturgis might say to me if hewere alive. A gray Lincoln drove up to the curb.“Appreciate it, Boss,” I said. “N’ thanks!” Whirlingback around, I hurried inside, wiggled throughthe shoppers and jogged back into the atrium.
