THE BOSTON DIAMOND
CREDITS OVER:
FADE IN:
1 1EXT. A CLEARING, BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS -- MORNING
The clearing is surrounded on three sides by woods. It isa quiet, sunny spring day.
PULLBACK REVEALS:
TWO ROWS OF 10 MEN, apart by a dozen yards - to the LEFT,BEWIGGED ENGLISH ARMY OFFICERS AND ARISTOS; to the RIGHT,A MOTLEY CREW OF CIVILIAN AMERICANS. From their appearancesand demeanour, there is a clear social gulf between the
two sets of men. The two sides face off - as if they areabout to take part in some minor skirmish. (Amongst theirnumber familiar contemporary sporting faces are noted -DARREN GOUGH, ALEC STEWART, GRAHAM THORPE, ADAM HOLLIOAKEand CAL RIPKEN, GREG MADDUX, MIKE PIAZZA, MARK McGWIRE)
An impeccable aristo in his mid-50's, CECIL STANHOPE 17THDUKE OF SUSSEX, and ENGLISH AMBASSADOR to the AMERICANCOLONIES, stands before the English contingent. His down-at-heel colonial neighbour, ABNER JEFFERSON, stands beforethe colonial Americans.
SUPERIMPOSE: 'APRIL 1775 - BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS'
PULLBACK REVEALS:
AN ARTIST, hastily sketching the scene. Sussex loses hispatience at 'posing', and strides away towards a hut.
In the background, the 'warriors' break off, divestthemselves of their outer garments and proceed to constructa rudimentary BASEBALL FIELD - a homeplate/wicket, apitching mound, marking posts and 3 bases.
2 2EXT. SUMMER HUT, CLEARING -- MOMENTS LATER
Sussex - accompanied by his manservant DALRYMPLE carryinga sack of money - and Jefferson - accompanied by a lawyer,STIMPSON - walk towards a small table covered by a clothin front of the hut.
BEHIND THEM, the Americans run out onto the field to takeup their fielding positions.
CLOSE ON: THE TABLE, as Dalrymple passes the money-sack toSussex. From Sussex's hand, the bag of 100 gold sovereignsKLUNKS HEFTILY upon the table.

The protagonists sign it, as an English BATTER walks tothe 'plate' behind them. Sussex and Jefferson shake hands.
3 3EXT. SUMMER HUT, CLEARING
As Sussex and Jefferson take their seats, Dalrymple standsclose by with pen and rule/scorebook.
4 4EXT. BASEBALL FIELD, CLEARING
The American PITCHER winds up, and, at the point of release,a MUSKET-SHOT is heard. The BALL SAILS WILDLY over thebatter's head. The pitcher DROPS TO THE GROUND.
Lying flat on the ground, the pitcher feels over his body -and is relieved to find out that he has NOT been shot.
5 5EXT. CLEARING
A COLONIAL ON HORSEBACK (PAUL REVERE-like) leaps from thewoods - as another MUSKET-SHOT whistles past. The Riderwhips his horse across the field
6 6EXT. SUMMER HUT, CLEARING
Jefferson and Sussex are surprised and frightened.
7 7EXT. WOODS
More SHOTS are heard and the Rider ducks to avoid the shots. The players scatter. The Rider heads across the fieldtowards the woods opposite.
A POSSE of pursuing English soldiers emerges from the woods. The players run from the field.
8 8EXT. SUMMER HUT, CLEARING
With the field now overrun with soldiers, Jefferson, Sussexand entourage prepare to flee.
CLOSE ON: THE TABLE, with the money-bag and document. AHAND APPEARS and snatches them both up.
The English and American sporting protagonists FLEE TOOPPOSITE SIDES.
