137The Gospel according to St. Luke

    The Gospel according to

St. LukeThis evangelist is generally supposed to have been a physician, and a companion of the apostle Paul. Thestyle of his writings, and his acquaintance with the Jewish rites and usages, sufficiently show that he wasa Jew, while his knowledge of the Greek language and his name, speak his Gentile origin. He is firstmentioned Act 16:10,11, as with Paul at Troas, whence he attended him to Jerusalem, and was with him in

his voyage, and in his imprisonment at Rome. This Gospel appears to be designed to supersede manydefective and unauthentic narratives in circulation, and to give a genuine and inspired account of the lifemiracles, and doctrines of our Lord, learned from those who heard and witnessed his discourses and miracles

    CHAPTER 1 The Preface. (1-4)

Zacharias and Elisabeth. (5-25) Christs birth announced. (26-38)

Interview of Mary and Elisabeth. (39-56) The birth of John the Baptist. (57-66) The song of Zacharias. (67-80)

FFFFForasmuch as many have taken inhand to set forth in order a declarationof those things which are most surelybelieved among us,22222 Even as they delivered them unto us,

wh ich from the beginn ing wereeyewitnesses, and ministers of the word;33333 It seemed good to me also, having hadperfect understanding of all things fromthe very first, to write unto thee in order, most excellent Theophilus,44444That thou mightest know the certaintyof those things, wherein thou hast beeninstructed.55555There was in the days of Herod, theking of Judaea, a certain priest namedZacharias, of the course of Abia: and hiswife was of the daughters of Aaron, andher name was Elisabeth.66666And they were both righteous beforeGod, walking in all the commandmentsand ordinances of the Lord blameless.77777And they had no child, because thatElisabeth was barren, and they bothwere now well stricken in years.88888And it came to pass, that while heexecuted the priests office before Godin the order of his course,

were praying without at the time ofincense.1111111111And there appeared unto him an angelof the Lord standing on the right side of

the altar of incense.1212121212And when Zacharias saw him, he was

troubled, and fear fell upon him.1313131313 But the angel said unto him, Fear not,Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; andthy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son,and thou shalt call his name John.1414141414And thou shalt have joy and gladness;and many shall rejoice at his birth.1515151515 For he shall be great in the sight of

the Lord, and shall drink neither winenor strong drink; and he shall be filledwith the Holy Ghost, even from hismothers womb.1616161616And many of the children of Israelshall he turn to the Lord their God.1717171717And he shall go before him in the spiritand power of Elias, to turn the hearts ofthe fathers to the children, and thedisobedient to the wisdom of the just;to make ready a people prepared for the

Lord.1818181818And Zacharias said unto the angel,

Whereby shall I know this? for I am anold man, and my wife well stricken inyears.1919191919And the angel answering said untohim, I am Gabriel, that stand in thepresence of God; and am sent to speakunto thee, and to shew thee these gladtidings.2020202020And, behold, thou shalt be dumb, andnot able to speak, until the day thatthese things shall be performed, becausethou believest not my words, which shallbe fulfilled in their season.2121212121And the people waited for Zacharias, and marvelled that he tarried so long inthe temple.2222222222And when he came out, he could notspeak unto them: and they perceivedthat he had seen a vision in the temple:

rejected the counsel of God againstthemselves, being not baptized of him.3131313131And the Lord said, Whereunto thenshall I liken the men of this generation?and to what are they like?3232323232They are like unto children sitting in

the marketplace, and calling one toanother, and saying, We have piped untoyou, and ye have not danced; we havemourned to you, and ye have not wept.3333333333

For John the Baptist came neithereating bread nor drinking wine; and yesay, He hath a devil.3434343434The Son of man is come eating anddrinking; and ye say, Behold agluttonous man, and a winebibber, afriend of publicans and sinners!3535353535 But wisdom is justified of all herchildren.3636363636And one of the Pharisees desired him

2727272727And he answering said, Thou shaltlove the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thystrength, and with all thy mind; and thyneighbor as thyself.2828282828And he said unto him, Thou hastanswered right: this do, and thou shaltlive.2929292929 But he, willing to justify himself, saidunto Jesus, And who is my neighbor?3030303030And Jesus answering said, A certainman went down from Jerusalem toJericho, and fell among thieves, whichstripped him of his raiment, andwounded him, and departed, leaving himhalf dead.3131313131And by chance there came down acertain priest that way: and when he

saw him, he passed by on the other side.3232323232And likewise a Levite, when he wasat the place, came and looked on him,and passed by on the other side.3333333333 But a certain Samaritan, as he

journeyed, came where he was: andwhen he saw him, he had compassionon him,3434343434And went to him, and bound up his

wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and sethim on his own beast, and brought him

to an inn, and took care of him.3535353535And on the morrow when he departed,he took out two pence, and gave themto the host, and said unto him, Take careof him; and whatsoever thou spendestmore, when I come again, I will repaythee.3636363636Which now of these three, thinkest

thou, was neighbor unto him that fellamong the thieves?3737373737And he said, He that shewed mercyon him. Then said Jesus unto him, Go,and do thou likewise.3838383838 Now it came to pass, as they went,

that he entered into a certain village:and a certain woman named Marthareceived him into her house.3939393939And she had a sister called Mary,

which also sat at Jesus feet, and heardhis word.4040404040 But Martha was cumbered about much

    True happiness. (27,28)

Christ reproves the Jews. (29-36) He reproves the Pharisees. (37-54)

AAAAAnd it came to pass, that, as he waspraying in a certain place, when heceased, one of his disciples said untohim, Lord, teach us to pray, as John alsotaught his disciples.22222And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven,Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom

come. Thy will be done, as in heaven,so in earth.33333 Give us day by day our daily bread.44444And forgive us our sins; for we alsoforgive every one that is indebted to us.And lead us not into temptation; butdeliver us from evil.55555And he said unto them, Which of youshall have a friend, and shall go untohim at midnight, and say unto him,Friend, lend me three loaves;66666 For a friend of mine in his journey iscome to me, and I have nothing to setbefore him?77777And he from within shall answer andsay, Trouble me not: the door is nowshut, and my children are with me inbed; I cannot rise and give thee.88888 I say unto you, Though he will not riseand give him, because he is his friend, yet because of his importunity he will

be given you; seek, and ye shall find;knock, and it shall be opened unto you.1010101010 For every one that asketh receiveth;and he that seeketh findeth; and to himthat knocketh it shall be opened.1111111111 If a son shall ask bread of any of you

that is a father, will he give him a stone?or if he ask a fish, will he for a fish givehim a serpent?1212121212 Or if he shall ask an egg, will he offerhim a scorpion?1313131313 If ye then, being evil, know how togive good gifts unto your children: howmuch more shall your heavenly Fathergive the Holy Spirit to them that askhim?1414141414

And he was casting out a devil, and itwas dumb. And it came to pass, whenthe devil was gone out, the dumb spake;and the people wondered.1515151515 But some of them said, He casteth outdevils through Beelzebub the chief of thedevils.1616161616And others, tempting him, sought ofhim a sign from heaven.1717171717 But he, knowing their thoughts, saidunto them, Every kingdom divided

against itself is brought to desolation;and a house divided against a housefalleth.1818181818 If Satan also be divided againsthimself, how shall his kingdom stand?because ye say that I cast out devilsthrough Beelzebub.1919191919And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils,

by whom do your sons cast them out?therefore shall they be your judges.2020202020 But if I with the finger of God cast outdevils, no doubt the kingdom of God iscome upon you.2121212121When a strong man armed keepethhis palace, his goods are in peace:2222222222 But when a stronger than he shallcome upon him, and overcome him, hetaketh from him all his armor whereinhe trusted, and divideth his spoils.2323232323 He that is not with me is against me:and he that gathereth not with me

    scattereth.

2424242424When the unclean spirit is gone outof a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest; and finding none, he saith,I will return unto my house whence Icame out.2525252525And when he cometh, he findeth itswept and garnished.2626262626Then goeth he, and taketh to him

seven other spirits more wicked thanhimself; and they enter in, and dwellthere: and the last state of that man isworse than the first.2727272727And it came to pass, as he spake these

things, a certain woman of the companylifted up her voice, and said unto him,Blessed is the womb that bare thee, andthe paps which thou hast sucked.2828282828 But he said, Yea rather, blessed are

they that hear the word of God, and keepit.2929292929And when the people were gathered

thick together, he began to say, This isan evil generation: they seek a sign; andthere shall no sign be given it, but thesign of Jonas the prophet.3030303030 For as Jonas was a sign unto theNinevites, so shall also the Son of manbe to this generation.3131313131The queen of the south shall rise up

in the judgment with the men of thisgeneration, and condemn them: for shecame from the utmost parts of the earthto hear the wisdom of Solomon; and, behold, a greater than Solomon is here.3232323232The men of Nineve shall rise up in the

judgment with this generation, and shallcondemn it: for they repented at thepreaching of Jonas; and, behold, agreater than Jonas is here.3333333333 No man, when he hath lighted acandle, putteth it in a secret place, neither under a bushel, but on acandlestick, that they which come inmay see the light.3434343434 The light of the body is the eye:

besought him to dine with him: and hewent in, and sat down to meat.3838383838And when the Pharisee saw it, hemarvelled that he had not first washedbefore dinner.3939393939And the Lord said unto him, Now do

ye Pharisees make clean the outside ofthe cup and the platter; but your inwardpart is full of ravening and wickedness.4040404040Ye fools, did not he that made that

which is without make that which iswithin also?4141414141

But rather give alms of such thingsas ye have; and, behold, all things areclean unto you.4242424242 But woe unto you, Pharisees! for ye

tithe mint and rue and all manner ofherbs, and pass over judgment and thelove of God: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.4343434343Woe unto you, Pharisees! for ye love

the uppermost seats in the synagogues, and greetings in the markets.

4444444444Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are as graves whichappear not, and the men that walk overthem are not aware of them.4545454545Then answered one of the lawyers, and said unto him, Master, thus sayingthou reproachest us also.4646464646And he said, Woe unto you also, yelawyers! for ye lade men with burdensgrievous to be born, and ye yourselvestouch not the burdens with one of yourfingers.4747474747 Woe unto you! for ye bu ild thesepulchres of the prophets, and yourfathers killed them.4848484848Truly ye bear witness that ye allow
