Joshua Sends Spiesinto JerichoJoshua 2

Joshua the son of Nun secretly sent two men out of Shittim as spies, saying,

Go, view theland, including

Jericho.

They went and came into the house of a prostitute whose name was Rahab, and slept there.

The king of Jericho was told,

Behold,men ofthe children ofIsrael came inhere tonight to

spy out the land.

Jerichos king sent to Rahab, saying, Bring out the men who have come to you, who have enteredinto your house; for they have come to spy out all the land.

The woman took the twomen and hid them.

Then she said,

Yes, the men came tome, but I didnt knowwhere they came from.

About the time of theshutting of the gate,when it was dark, themen went out.

Where the men went, Idont know.

Pursue them quickly.

You may catch up with

them.

But she had brought them up to the roof, and hidden them under thestalks of flax which she had laid in order on the roof.

The men pursued them along the way to thefords of the Jordan River.

As soon as those who pursued them had goneout, they shut the gate.

and that all the inhabitants ofthe land melt away beforeyou.

Before they had lain down, she came up to

them on theroof.

She said to themen, I knowthat Yahweh hasgiven you theland,

For we have heard howYahweh dried up the waterof the Red Sea before you,when you came out ofEgypt;

and what you did to the twokings of the Amorites, whowere beyond the Jordan,to Sihon and to Og,whom you utterlydestroyed.

As soon aswe had heard it,

our hearts melted,and there wasnt any more

spirit in any man, because ofyou:

for Yahweh

in heaven above,

and thatthe fear of youhas fallen upon us,

your God,he is God

and on earthbeneath.

Now therefore, please swearto me by Yahweh,

since I have dealt kindly withyou, that you alsowill deal kindly withmy fathers house,

and give me a truesign; and that youwill save alive myfather, my mother,my brothers, and mysisters, and all that theyhave, and will deliver ourlives from death.

Then she let them down by a cord through the window; for her house was on the side of the wall,and she lived on the wall.

The men said to her,

Our life for yours,

if you dont talk about thisbusiness of ours;

and it shall be, when Yahweh gives us the land, that we will deal kindly and truly with you.

She said to them,

Go to the mountain,lest the pursuers find you.

Hide yourselves therethree days,

until the pursuershave returned.

Afterward,you may go your way.

The men said to her,

We will be guiltless of thisyour oath which youve made

us to swear.

Behold,

when we comeinto the land,tie this line

of scarlet threadin the window

which you used tolet us down.

Gather to yourselfinto the house

your father,your mother,your brothers,

and all your fathershousehold.

It shall be thatwhoever goes out of the

doors of your houseinto the street,

his blood will be on his head,

and we will be guiltless.

Whoever is with youin the house,

his blood shall beon our head,

if any hand is on him.

But if you talk about thisbusiness of ours,then we shall be

guiltless of your oath whichyouve made us to swear.

She said,

Let it be as you have said.

She sent them away,and they departed.

Then she tied the scarletline in thewindow.

They went, and came to the mountain, and stayedthere three days, until the pursuers had returned.

The pursuers sought them all alongthe way, but didnt find

them.

Then the two men returned,descended from themountain, crossed the river,and came to Joshua the son

of Nun.

They told him all that hadhappened to them.

They said to Joshua,

Truly Yahweh has delivered allthe land into our hands.

Moreover, all the inhabitants ofthe land melt away before us.
