The Book Bag TreeDesigned by Michele Nicole Johnson

Client:Brunswick-Glynn County Library

Challenge: Design a structure to be used todisplay and store books to be givenaway in a literacy campaign.

Solution:I designed a structure with stacked boxesbased on a hand-drawn idea given to meby the client. It was designed so that thebottom box had a hinged door for storingbooks. The middle box has nooks for displaying books. The leaves on the topare a mobile.

Three designs were sketched and shown to the client, who decided to go with a combination of the one in the middle and the one on the right.

I surprised the client with a final design that incorporated hidden creatures within the tree branches for small children to find.

A logo was designed to be used on book bags and other printed materials for the literacy campaign.

The structure was built by library volunteers and painted by volunteers and library staff. The logo was used on the top level. The mobile is still under construction, however, the books are ready, and the campaign will be unveiled in Spring 2014.
